Description

April 28, 1925. 1 1,535,164
C. F. KLINGEL MOTOR VEHI CLE SIGNAL Filed Oct. 5, 1921 Patented Apr. 28, 1925 UNITED STA CHARLES F. KLINGEL, OF IRVINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
MOTOR-VEHICLE SIGNAL.
Application filed October 3, 1921. Serial No. 504,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. KLINonL, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Motor-Vehicle Signals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to signals designed chiefly for use in connection With motor vehicles to prevent rear end collision and advise the driver of a following vehicle when the vehicle in advance is about to turn, slow, or stop. The present signal embodies a case subdivided intoindependent compartments each of which contains a lamp in an individual circuit under the control of the driver, and a door closing the front of the case and the compartments thereof and bearing legends or words to be displayed by the light in the compartment.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood. I
While the drawings illustrate an embodiinent of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may beresorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a front view of a signal embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail view of the lamp socket holder.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The signal embodies a case 1 which is closed with the exception of the front to which is fitted a door 2'which is hinged for convenience to swing into open or closed position. The interior of the case 1 is subdivided by horizontal partitions into compartments 3, 4, 5, and 6, each containing a lamp 7 included in an individual circuit under control of the driver so that any electric lamp may be lighted to illuminate and display the signal to be displayed. The horizontal partitions 8 are removable for cleaning or other desired purpose.
A holder 9 of insulatingmaterial such as hard rubber, papier mach, or the like is disposed at the rear of the case and is provided with sockets for receiving the lamp 7. The
lead wires are let into the holder 9 which is suitably recessed" as shown at 9 for this purpose.
The partitions 8 are removably held in position at one of their ends by means of transverse grooves 12 in insulating material 9, and by transverse angle cleats 13 spaced apart to form grooves at their other ends.
The door 2 is provided with words or legends to convey the desired information to indicate the direction of turn or the intention of the driver so as to obviate a rear end collision. The words or legends appear opposite the respective compartments and are displayed when the lamps 7 are lighted. As indicated, the words or legends are stenciled in the door 2 but it is obvious that they may be provided in any manner so as to be illuminated when the lamps are lighted. The door 2 is provided with an opening 10 opposite the compartment 6 and a red glass covers said opening to enable the lamp in the compartment (3 to shed red light rays whereby the device may be used as a tail lamp. The door 2 is provided upon its inner side at its edges with flanges 11 which engage and retain in position the red glass plate and a transparent sheet of material, such as mica or glass, whereby to cover the openings formed by the stenciling of the. words or legends. 1]. indicates a U-shaped dividing strip also provided with flanges to engage an edge of the glass plate and of the transparent sheet material, the bight of said U-shaped dividing strip receiving an edge of the lowermost of said partitions 8.
The lamp sockets are carried by the same holder and are electrically insulated and the lead wires extending thereto are let into the interior comprising the holder so as to be out of the Way. Each ofthe lamps is in an individual circuit whichis under control of legend may be displayed as required whereby to signal the intention of the driver to the operator of a following vehicle and thereby 1 obviate a casualty.
Having thus described my invention what 5 I claim is z-- 4 A display device comprising a casing, a partition dividing said casing into a plurality of compartments, said casing having its front wall in the form of a hinged door, 1 transparent panels carried by said door, a iJ-shaped element carried by said door at its inner side provided with securin flanges for said panels, and the bight 0 the U- shaped element being in line with and adapt- Ed to receive the forward edgeof the partiion. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
