w. ERIIDGEWATER BOXING GLOVE Filed Nov. 27, 1923 I .1}: we IL 807' Patented Apr. 21, 1925.
WILLIAM BRIDGEWATER, or .noncasrnn, ENGLAND.
BOXING LGL'oir'E.
Application filed November 27, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILmAM BRIDGE- wn'rnn, a subject of the King of England, residing at Done-aster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Boxing Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to boxing gloves.
The invention has for its object to provide boxing gloves of such improved design and construction that better protection for the hands of the wearer is provided, injury to the thumbs and illegal use of the latter are positively prevented, and objectionable holding or clinching tactics are greatly mini mized.
According to the invention the gloves are constructed thumbless, that is without projecting or separate thumb stalls or thumb coverings, the thumb stall or thumb covering of each glove being an integral part of the whole glove, in distinct contrast to the old type of glove which allowed the projecting thumb stall to be extended or outstretched at will.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a suitable manner of carrying out the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a modification, and
Figure 8 is a side view of the glove shown in Figure 2.
Thus in a suitable manner of carrying out the invention the glove may be so constructed that the whole of the hand, including the thumb, is adapted to be enclosed within a single case or stall a, Figure 1, the leather or other outer covering of which is formed primarily in one piece or of any suitable number of pieces sewn or otherwise fastened to one another. The interior of the glove may be so constructed that the thumb is, comparatively speakin free therein, or said interior may be provided with a pocket or stall adapted to receive the thumb whilst allowing suflicient movement of the latter inside the glove to permit of obtaining an adequate closing and clenching of the hand as a whole and aproper grip onthe glove.
In a modified construction of the glove Serial No. 677,308.
the same may comprise a main stall, case or section a Figures 2 and 3, for receiving the fingers and the palm of the hand, and a secondary stall, case or section Z) to accommodate or protect the thumb, the two stalls, cases or sections being formed integrally with one another in any suitable manner, that is, the thumb stall is united to the body of the glove throughout the entire length of such thumb stallQ This construction of the glove would give to the latter the outward appearance of being provided with a separate stall for the thumb, whilst at the same time providing for the requisite freedom of movement of the fingers and thumb in extending and clenching the hand and in 0btaining a tight grip on the glove, and facilitating the manufacture of the glove as regards the location of the padding and the fastening together of its various parts. In this construction also the thumb may be free within the glove or be arranged within an interior pocket.
According to another modification, not shown, the glove may be made the same as or similarly to the gloves now in common use and having a separate thumb stall, in which case said stall would be fastened down on to the main or body portion of the glove either permanent or temporarily and by sewing or in any other convenient manner, thus retaining the feature of the invention of providing a boxing glove having no projecting thumb stall.
In any of the constructions above de scribed the interior of the glove may be provided with pockets or stalls to receive the fingers; the amount and distribution of the padding within the glove may be varied: preferably, the part c of the glove disposed adjacent to the outer side of the hand is well padded to prevent the inflicting of illegal blows on an opponent by chopping tactics, the grip upon the glove and the strength of the latter as a whole may be increased by providing one or more leather bars or ribs (Z extending across the inside of the glove; these and all other details of construction and manufacture of the gloves would de pend upon the class and selling price of the latter and upon any other special requirements.
What I claim is 1. A boxing glove having a main stall to receive the fingers and palm of the hand, and a secondary and externally arranged stall to a-oconnnoclaterthe thumb, the secondconnection of the stalls preventing the My stall being secured throughout its length thumb from being extended independently to the main stall. of the rest of the hand. 10
2. A boxing glove having independent In testimony whereof I have hereunto 5 finger and thumb stalls lntegrally connected signed my name.
throughout their length, the thumb stall appearing externally of the glove, the integral WILLIAM BRIDGEVVATER.
