L. S. CHILSON PENDANT Filed Aug. 5. 1922 Patented Apr. 2l, 1925. i
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS s. cinLsoN, or ATTLEEoRo, MASSACHUSETTS, AssIGNon To r. M. FISHER com PANY, or ATTLEBoRo, MASSACHUSETTS. A CORPORATION or RHODEy ISLAND.
PENDANT.
Application illedAugust 3, 1922. Serial No. 579,441.
T 0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs S. CHILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pendants, of which the followinu is a specification.
This invention rlates to an improved construction of ornaments, adapted for use as a pendant, charm or the like, and has for its object to provide a. device of this character which comprises in its construction abackground member formed of mother-of-pearl, to the lustrous surface of which are cemented feathers arranged to represent birds having brilliant plumage, 4the same being covered and protected by a lens.
'With these and other objects in view, the invention consists lof certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.`
In the accompanying drawings: y
Figure 1 is a frontelevation showing a pendant made of my improved construction.
Figure 2 is a central sectional elevation of the device. A.
It is found in practice that by employing a disc or thin sheet of mother-of-pearl as a background upon which feathers are ar-v ranged to represent birds having brilliant plumage, mot-her-of-pearl provides .a lustrous background which cannot. be produced by artificial means, the surface of the motherof-pearl being of such a character that it will receive a specially constructed cement to which feathers will adhere and on which they may be arranged to represent birds having a brilliant plumage, which taken in coiinection with the lustrous iridescent effect of the background, presents a most brilliant and attractive appearance' to the device, imparting a depth or distance leffect simulating an appearance of the sky, and the following is a detailed description of one means by which this result maybe accomplished: y
With reference to the drawings, 10 4designates a pair of thin sheetdiscs of motherof-pearl, which are formed of the desired diameter of pendant to lie back to back, and on the front or lustrous surface of each of these background members are connected by cement or other suitable means small feathers of the gorgeous colored plumage of tropical birds, arranged to represent birds of brilliant plumage which when mounted upon the lustrous surface of the inot-her-of-pearl,
assume a very life-like appearance, which cannot be produced by the use of any other peripheral edges of the lenses, the ends of this frame being each provided with a lug 14 which are drawn and securedtogether by a screw 15.
To one of` these lugs is secured an eye member 16 to which an attaching or suspending ring 17 is connected whereby in assembling the parts of this pendant it is only necessary to place the background members back to back, after having been properly prepared, then placing the lenses l11 over these background members and binding the lenses together by the frame 13, the device being then ready to be worn by the user.
My improved device having a background of mother-of-pearl on which the feathers of birdsare mounted provides a very brilliant and beautiful ornament which may be used for many purposes. v
The foregoing description is directed 'solely towards the construction illustrated, but l desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical lchanges to which the device is susceptible,
the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim: An ornament ofthe character described comprising a background member formed of mother-of-pearl, a protecting lens, means for securing said lens and background toi gether, feathers or the like secured to the surface of said background member beneath said lens, said feathers being arranged in simulation of a bird or the like and said background having a natural iridescence imparting a depth or dista-ntial effect simulating the appearance of the sky.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
` LEVIS S. CHILSON.
