Said chain 47 extends around the sprocket wheel 48 which is rigidly connected with the shaft 42 of said roller 4() intermediate of the length of the latter and of the width of said belt 30. The purpose and effect of the arrangement herein described is to properly connect said rollers 39 and 4() for simultaneous rotation without excessive tensile strain upon said endless belt 30; the major portion of such strain being borne by said chain 47.

'Vhen the vehicle is arranged to be operated by the treadmill mechanism above described; ysai-d tongue 16 is upturned to the position shown in Fig. IV, in which it rests upon said hand rail 22 and may be used by the operator to steer the vehicle by the dirigible wheels 4 and 5 while the operato-r stands upon said belt 30 and is supported by said hand rail 22.
Although the progress of the vehicle may be checked by the` operator remaining stationary upon said belt 30 until the latter, moving in the direction of the arrow, shown in Fig. IV, brings the heels of the operator against the rear portion of said housing 37; however, I find it convenient to provide the wagon with the brake lever 56, which is pivoted at 57 upon the housing 37, and provided at its lower end with roller 58 arranged to bear upon the rubber tire 59 of the rear wagon wheel 2. I have found it convenient to embody my invention in a toy wagon of ordinary size and proportions as illustrated. However, it is to be understood that I do no-t desire to limit myself to such embodiment, as va- `of said body;

I claim:

In a toy wagon, the combination with a rectangular express body, having a pair of trap doors in the floor thereof, hinged on axes parallel with the length of said body and a-dapted to lie flat on s-aid floor when opened, and serving to normally close a rectangular opening in said floor; of a hand rail, of inverted U-shape, hinged to said floor and adapted to be upturned in vertical position toward the front of said body; braces upon opposite sides of said body arranged to serve as stop supports for said hand rail in its upturned position; means arranged to detachably secure said hand rail in its upright position, including hooks and eyes; a frame including a non-rotatable axle provided with twodirigible wheels at the front of said body; means pivotally securingI said dirigible wheel frame to said body; a rigid tractor member pi'votally connected to said frame and arranged to ext-end in front of said body and be upturned against said hand rail; whereby said dirigible wheelsr may be turned to steer the wagon; an axle frame, rigidly connected with said body, at the rear end thereof; an axle mounted to rotate in said rear axle frame and provided with one supporting wheel rigidly connected therewith upon one side another supporting wheel mounted to turn freely upon said rear axle at the opposite side of said body; a gear wheel rigidly connected with said rear axle; a treadmill mechanism, adapted to propel said wagon, including a gear wheel in mesh with said gear on said rea-r axle and rigidly connected with a rear driving shaft; journal bearings for said rear driving shaft, rigidly connected with said body at opposite sides of said opening; a front driving shaft, parallel with said rear driving shaft; journal bearings for said fro-nt driving shaft, rigidly connected with said body, at oppositesides of said opening, and arranged to support said front shaft at a higher level than said rear shaft; sprocket gearI wheels respectively rigidly connectcd with said rear and front driving shafts, intermediate of the length thereof; an endless sprocket chain extending around said sprocket gears und operatively connecting said shafts; belt rol lers on said shafts, extending upon axially opposite sides of sai-d sprocket gears; an endless belt, formed of textile fabric, extending around said rollers, and having a longitudinal series of transverse slats arF ranged as footholds upon the outer face thereof; an idle roller, parallel with said front and rear shafts and extending between them and beneath the upper reach of said lil() endless belt, arranged to support the weight of the opera-tor on said belt, within said openine; and journal bearings for said idle roller, at respectively opposite Sides of Said openingl in said body: whereby, when said doors are opened and Said hand rail and tractor raised, to eotnierative relatiom :said wagon may be propelled by the weight of an operator bearing upon said belt and. when` said doors are Closed and Said hand rail and, tractor lowered, said body at'fords a receptaele tor the transportation ot articles, and the wagon. may be drawn by said trac-tor, regardless et' said treadmill n'ieehaniem.

endless belt, extending around said rollers and having a longitudinal series of transverse members arranged as footholds upon the outer face thereof; and an idle; roller parallel with said front and rear shafts and extending between them and beneath the upper reach of said endless belt, arranged to support the weight of the operator on said belt, within said opening; whereby, when said door is opened, said wagon may be propelled by the weight of an operator bearing upon said belt and, when said door is closed, said body affords a receptacle for the transportation of articles and the wagon may be drawn by said tractor, regardless of said treadmill mechanism.

In a toy wagon, the combination with a body, having a pair of trap doors in the floor thereof, hinged on axes parallel with the length of said body and adapted to lie fiat on said Hoor when opened, and serving to normally close a rectangular opening in said floor; of a hand rail, adapted to lie fiat on said floor and be upturned in vertical position; means arranged to detachably secure said hand rail in its upright position; a frame provided with two dirigible Wheels at the front of said body; means pivotally securing said dirigible wheel frame to said body; a rigid tractor member arranged to extend in front of said body and be upturned; whereby said diirigible wheels may be turned to steer the wagon; an axle frame, rigidly connected with said body, at the rear end thereof, an axle mounted to rotate in said rear axle frame and provided with a supporting wheel rigidly connected therewith upon one side of said body; another supporting wheel mounted to turn freely upon said rear axle at the opposite: side of said body; a gear wheel rigidly connected with said rear axle; a treadmill mechanism, adapted to propel said wagon, including a gear wheel in mesh with said gear on said rear axle and rigidly connected with a rear driving shaft; a front driving shaft, parallel with said rear driving shaft, at a higher level than said rear shaft; sprocket gear wheels respectively rigidly connected with said rear and front driving shafts; an endless sprocket chain extending around said sprocket gears and operatively connecting said shafts; belt rollers on said shafts; an endless belt, extending around said rollers and having longitudinal series of transverse members arranged as footholds upon the outer face thereof; and means, arranged to support the weight of the operator on said belt, within said opening; whereby, when said doors are opened and said hand rail and tractor raised, to cooperative relation, said wagon may be propelled by the weight of an operator bearing upon said belt and, when said doors are closed and said hand rail and tractor lowered, said body affords a receptacle for the transportation of articles and the wagon may be drawn by said tractor, regardless of said treadmill mechanism.
