Be it known that I, EMIL C. BUNTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of -Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to smoking appliances and more particularly to that class of such appliances embodying improvements to and attachments for cigar and cigarette holders. I

The invention generally has for its objeot to provide an improved cigar or cigarette holder in which is embodied means for receiving and holding the ashes which fall from the cigar or cigarette during the smokingaction. V

More specifically the invention seeks to provide an improved attachment for a cigar and cigarette holder for receiving and holding the ashes which fall from the cigar or cigarette during the smoking action and in which the cooperative elements are so constructed as to be collapsible from the operative condition to a condition for convenient storing in the pocket ofthe user thereof and in which means is provided whereby loss of the ash receiving element from the holder is impossible and whereby the attachment is so mounted upon the holder as to prevent inadvertent removal therefrom.

With the above and other objects in view the invention further resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts'all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the drawing by which it is accompanied, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the. invention, the samebeing shown in the ash receiving condition.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the inventionin the collapsed condition.

Figure 3 is an enlarged detail central longitudinal section of the invention at the posltion of the front securing band.

Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3, the section being taken at the position of the rear securing band.

Figure 7 is a central longitudinal section of the slide receiving body attachment and illustrates a slightly modified construction thereof.

Figure 8 is a diagrammatic plan of the blank from which the form of body shown in Figure 7 may be made.

In the drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents a common type of cigarette holder which includes the usual smoke bore 2 and the ci arette receiving socket 3.

As is common int is type of cigarette holder the portion thereof which recelves'the cigarette is round in cross section while the remainder of the body thereof is reduced from the cigarette receiving end to the end engaged by the mouth of the user so as to be relatively flat or elliptical at that end, see Figures 1, 5 and 6.

While it is possible to construct my invention as a fixed part of the cigarette holder I prefer to construct the same as an attachment thereto, the said attachment comprising a holder bod and an ash receiving slide cooperative wit that body.

The body portion of my attachment is formed to include a front metal band 4 adapted to fit the cigarette holder adjacent the cigarette receiving end with tight retaining friction, and 5 indicates the rear metal band which is adapted to fit the said holder at a point intermediate of the cigarette receiving end and the end thereof engaged by the mouth of the user, and which band is elliptical in shape to fit, with retaining friction, the cross area of the said holder at that oint.

A slide gui e member 6 cooperates with the bands 4 and 5 informing the holder body and this guide member includes opposing inturned flanges 7 which are cut or shouldered, as at 8, to permit the said flanges 7 to engage the said holder and to be soldered or otherwise fixed to the said bands 4'5, as at 9. The rear end of the member 6 is turned up into engagement with the ring 5 so as to close that end of the holder, the other or front end beingleft open to form a slideway.

An ash receiving slide 11 is adapted to cooperate with the slide guide member 6 in a manner whereby the same may be extended to the ash reeciving position 5 iown in Figure 1 or collapsed or retracted to the posi tion shown in Figure 2 for conveniently storing the same in the pocket of the user when not in actual use. The slide 11 includes a spoon shaped end 12 and has the opposite end thereof turned over upon itself, as at 13, to form an end stop.

By reference to Figure 1 it will beobserved that when the cigarette holder and my improved attachment are in use the slide member 11 is pulled out to the operative position there shown and in position for receiving the ashes which may'drop from the cigarette to thereby prevent soiling of any table cover or the distribution of the ashes over the floor. The invention also being very effective in preventing the burning and scarring of any varnished or other surfaces upon which the holder may be laid as is indicated in that Figure.

In Figure 3 is clearly illustrated the manner in which the abutmentend 13 acts to form a stop to prevent the pulling of the slide 11 out of cooperative relation with the holder 6, the bottom portion of the ring 4- cooperating with the end 13 and forming a stop. In Figure 4 is illustrated the manner in which the abutment end 13 cooperates with the lower portion of the ring 5 in forming an end stop for stopping the slide at its innermost position indicated in Figure 2.

While the spoon end 12 forms a very practical feature intending to prevent the sliding of the falling ashes endwise out of the slide member, the said end also prevents removal of my improved attachment when the device is collapsed and placed in the pocket or some other place by the user thereof. While it will be an easy matter toremove my improved attachment from the holder when the parts are positioned as indicated in Figure 1, that is with the slide 11 at its extended position, it is impossible so to do when the parts are in the position illustrated in Figure 1 because of the fact that the spoon end or upturned portion 12 engages the cigarette receiving end of the" holder 1 as is indicated in full lines in Figure 2 and in dot and dash lines on Figure 3.

By reason of forming my improved at tachment as is indicated in Figures 1 to 6 of the drawing a device of a very neat appearance and of very inexpensive construction is provided and which may readily be aplied or removed from the type of cigarette holder illustrated when it is desired so to remove the same but which is so 0on structed that my improved attachment may not become removed from the holder inadvertently.

It will be also observed by Figures 5 and '6 that the slide guide member 6 conforms with the lower curvature of the holder throughout, thus making it possible to perfectly guide the slide member 11, which is of a uniform width throughout its length, thus effecting perfectness of operation and a construction very simple of manufacture and also one in which the weight is so distributed in aid of the nature of the cross sectional area of the holder itself as to provide for a perfect resting of the complete device in proper position as is indicated in Figure 1 in a manner for providing a resting of the device in a very stable manner upon any support, thus preventing the ready overturning of the same and the spilling of the ashes retained in the slide 11.

In Figures 7 and 8 are illustrated a central longitudinal section of a modified form of the holder body of my attachment and in Figure 8 the metal blank from which the same may be formed up. In this form of the invention the equivalent of the ring 4 is formed bythe opposing spring finger portions 14-44. and 1919. The slide guide body is formed from the portion 15 and the opposing inturned flanges by the portions 16. I

The slit 18 provides'for the continuation of the members 14 around the bottom of the holder 1 in a manner for providing the open end of the slideway and permitting the stamping down of the body 15 with relation thereto, the cutting of this slit 18 being made possible by the presence of the additional metal indicated at 17.

In Figures 9 and 10 are illustrated a further slight modification of the invention in which the relatively wide portions 20 form the equivalent of the front band, the width thereof permittin positioning of the slit 21 which provides For the pressing down of the guide body portion 22 to form the proper slideway therebetween, the inturned flanges being formed from the portions 23.

From the foregoing description, taken'in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the novel details of construction, the uses and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent.

What I claim is:

1. A device of the class described com prising a. trough shaped guide member,

ands secured to the guide member and adapted to grip a cigarette holderv within the limits of its ends with retaining friction, and a slide member slidably collapsible into and extensible from the guide member and having an upturned end adapted for retaining ashes when extended and for en} gaging the holder when collapsed to prevent inadvertent removal of the device from the holder.

rearmost band providing a closure for the guideway and the foremost band restricting the same, and a slide member collapsible in the guideway and having a spoon shaped end for retaining ashes when extended and for engaging the cigarette holder end to prevent inadvertent removal of the device when collapsed and an abutment end slidable in the guideway and adapted to cooperate with the bands in providing limiting stops.

3. .An attachment for cigar or cigarette holders comprising a slide guide member adapted to be stamped from a single sheet of metal to comprise a slide guide portion adapted to receive an ash receiving slide member, inturned edges for engaging the holder, and open rings whereby to mount the same upon the holder and for forming limiting stops for said slide member, and an ash receiving slide member slidably guided thereby and including a spoon shaped end for retaining ashes in the extended position of the slide and for engaging the holder to prevent inadvertent removal of the attachment when collapsed, and an end turned back upon itself to form an abutment for coopenating with the open rings in limiting longitudinal movement of said slide.
