IMPROVEMENT IN HANDCUFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,312, dated July 21, 1874; application filed June 6, 1874.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN L. BROOME and LORENZO D. C. WOOD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handcus; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoinpanying, drawings and to lthe letters of reference marked thereon, which forin a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to handcuffs, having for its object to improve the construction of the same; and it consists in the combination, with a pair of handcuffs, of a thiinble placed upon the connecting-bar within the shackles, for reducing the size thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, the various figures represent sectional views, showing different forms to which the invention may be attached.
Arepresents the shackles; a., the eye on the inner end; and B, the tube on the outer end, and C the fastening-screw; D, the bar, havin g shoulders d, against which the shackle rests. The shackles turn freely on their bearings, and the device may be locked at each end, or in the center, as desired. For the purpose of reducing the size ot' the shackle, a thinlble or sleeve, E, is placed on the bar D, between the two ends of the shackle. The sleeve is made to fit the bar in the center, and the outside is of curved forni.
A series of these thimbles may be made for each pair of hand cuffs, the thimbles being` of various sizes, so that the space inside of the shackle may be made large or small, as desired.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination With a pair of handcuffs or shackles, A A, the thimbles placed upon the connecting-bar within the shackles, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
