MOLD'.
To all 'whom t may concern.' l
Be it known that I, IViLLIAM E. NELSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing atl Kansas City, in the county ot Jackson and State ot Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iiiMolds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andeiract description ot' the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the artv to which it appertains to make and use the same.
vMy invention relates to improvements in molds designed 4prii'iiarily for use in the con# struction of concrete units, the principal object being to provide a mold of the general character disclosed iii ,my U. S. Patent No. 1,433,905,A provided with improved mea-iis for holding the removable side yrails inoperative position and for quickly releasing them when desired. y y
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanyii'ig drawings. i
Figure 1 is a top planview of a mold einbodying the improved holding means for two removable side rails.
Figure 2 is an endelevation partly broken away and in section.
Figure is a vertical transverse sectional view on line 8-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged view as indicated byline 4=4 of Figay v1.
Figure is a detail horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig.- 4.
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view as indicated by line 646 of Fig'. 1. j
In the drawings above'brieiiy described,
l) designates a platform which includes ak horizontal floor 1 and a framework 2 upon which said floor is secured, the framework being by preference mounted upon flangedv wheels (not shown) periiiittingr the rmold to be vreadily moved along trackage from` one place to another.
In the construction shown, `the fra-me 2includes two parallel, longitudinal, angle metal bars 3 and a plurality of transverse bars 4 bolted to the upper sides of said bars 3, certain of said bars 4 beingr projected at one end beyond one longitudinal edge o f the floor'l, as indicated at. 5. The bars 3' also project beyond one end oi' the Hoor 1, and short longitudinal bars 6 are secured upon vertical sectional' v may be passed through 'any ot the.openingsy vertical longitudinal said 3 ai'idtlieir vprojecting` end portions;
the endm'ost of the bars 4 and said bars',
being jointly notched as Aindicated at 7 at f 60 thev .points at which they crosseacli other.`
Two edges ofthel plattornrP- are provided with stationary side' rails Sand 9 respectively, which coactv with a pair of removable lar retainer for'y a plurality ot, sectional I vmolds, such as those disclosed in thefpate'iit above` referred to. ,These section aljmclds are not shcfivifi'nas the present application; deals with the means for clamping tlierails i 10 and 11 in place aiidwith the iiovelfinan?.
ner ot 'nioiiii tiiig'suchclainpiiig means. 1 /fit' this point, :attention may bev directed tetue ffact that theaforelmentioiied rails 1l) 11'are*disposedv along tl'iie side and end e'dges vofthe platform havingl tlie'projecting'ends of the bars and The clamping means tor the railsinquestionare mounted on these-bars, as described below.k '4
Contacting with the lower side ofeacli'of.lk
the bars 4 which is provided with al projecting end., 5, and also contacting with yeach oi' the short', longitudinal bars 6, at the lower side ot the latteigis a'v horizntalplate 12,
saidplateli'aving a suitable number (prefer-yiy ably'tw'o` oil-downwardly' projectingV ears 13 vformed. with va pluralityl Yof vertically .spaced bolt holes 14'. The inwardly turned, horizontal, inner end 15 of avertical arni A16',
is pivote/d .to the earslby a boltvl? which j 14, so that the arinniay be' pivotally mounted at ditierent elevations, bringing :its upper en d in proper relation with thereniovable rail 10 or 11,:as the case may be, whether this rail possessesa comparativelyshort vertical width, arelatively long width, or an'.
intermediate width, according to the thickness yof the `blocks .to be constructed.l
, Contacting-with the upper side "ot each of" tliebai's 4 and, 6, which are equipped with kice Y the plates 12, is another horizontal plate 18, i,
the vadj : icent plates 12 and 18 and the intern vening bar with which they contact, being'v prelierablyl secured- .together by ythru bolts 19 and 20.' and-iiiV desired, lthe bolts 2O mayy also pass through' an "additional long'gitudiiiall bai' 2l which i-s'shown underlyingv the trans.
hook, a bolt'23 preferably passes through it,
throu,f 1;h the plates 18 and 12, and through the bar` between said plates. This hook is adapted to engage the arm 16 to hold it norklnally in the upright position shown in the drawings.v The upper end of this arm is. provided with a thrust device which is preferably in the form of a screw 24-whose outer end is provided with a hand crank 25, the
inner end of saidA screwy being' engageable with the rail 10 or 11. This rail is by preff kerenee provided with an elongated cast metal latev 26 having a socket 27 vto receive the inner end of the` screw 2l, and it is pre- I ferred thaty the screw shall decline toward the rail, so that when it is tightened to force this rail inwardly,.it will also force `it'down- 'wardly and retain it in tight contact with the floor 1 upon which it slidably rests.
Tightening of the screw 24 places-a great deal of strain in, an outward direction upon the hook 22 which has 'a tendency to shift theplate 18 outwardly. l
of course, resisted bythe three bolts.y 19, 20. l. and 28, but in order topro-vide additional Such shifting is,
resistance against any outward shifting of the plate 18, the inner endportion of this plate is preferably offset downwardly from its outer end portion and seated ina recess 28 formed in the upper side of the bar i-or 6. The yportion y29y of the plate, Awhich joins the offset inner and outer end portions of -said plate, bears against one end wall 30 ofthe recess 28 and thusan additional anchorage is provided to lprevent any outward shiftingof the bar 18. The construction-just described, also ldisposes'the heads of the'bolts 19 and 20 in such positions as to prevent themy from interfering with yproper laying. of the ioorl. 1
.W hen placing the sectional ymoldsffn'ot Y shown) upon Ythe Hoor 1, all of the arms 16 ,serving also to force the rails downwardly` assume downwardly swung positions and the rails 10 and 11 are remoyed." When said molds are in'place however, the'railslO and 11 are properly positioned upon edge portionsy of the ioor 1, the arms 16 are swung lupwardly and held bythe hooks 22, and the screws 24 are rotated to force the rails 10 and 11 inwardly to their' proper, operativeposi- 1 tions, the inward declinations of said screws into tight contact with the l'ioor. After the blocksha-vey been ycast vand* have set, the
lscrews 24 are" loosened sufficiently to permit y release of the hooks 22,` andk when these vhooks are released,..it willy be seenvthat the arms 16will swing downwardly out of the way, permitting easy removal of the'k rails 10 and 11, allowing ,the completed concrete unitsv and the sectional. molds' to be readily k 'taken from the platform.
Excellent results have been obtained fromA L the constructionr herein disclosed and such -construction is therefore' ypreferably, folresasa/i lowed. However, within the scope of the inventionk as claimed, numerous modifications may be made. ltv is` also to be clearly understood that while the `improved structure is preferably embodied ina car, adapted to be moved along a track from a casting point to a ydrying point, thek invention could well be embodied in a stationary rather than a i portable structure.
I claim: y
