Description

- UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
FRANKLIN II. D. NEWVHARD, OF I-IOKENDAUQUA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 153,270, dated July '21, 1874; application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN-H. D. NEW- HARD, of Hokendauqua, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scaffold, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of my improved sca f fold arranged for inside work. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
I will describe the scaffold as erected for inside work.
A are four posts, each pair of which are connected by two inclined or diagonal braces, B, which cross each other in the center of the space between said posts A, and have hookbolts b attached to their ends, to hook into eyebolts a, attached to the posts A. The inclined braces 13 are made in two parts, which overlap each other, and to one of said parts is attached a keeper, 0', as shown in Fig. 2, through which the other part passes. The parts of the braces B are secured to each other, when adjusted, by a set-screw, D The posts are further connected at the sides of the scafi'old by the bars 0 D. The lower ends of the inclined bars 0 are beveled to fit against the posts A, with which they are connected by dowel-pins attached to said beveled ends, and which enter holes in said posts. The upper ends of the bars 0 are beveled to fit against each other, and are connected by a dowel-pin attached to one of said ends and entering a hole in the other. The outer ends of the horizontalvbars I) are provided with hook-bolts d, which hook into eyebolts a, attached to the posts A. The inner ends of the bars I) are beveled, to fit upon the inclined bars 0, where they are secured in place by dowel-pins attached to said bars D, and which enter holes in the said bars 0. The connection between the bars 0 D and bars G and posts A may be further secured by hooks and eyes, as shown in Fig. 2. E are bars, the inner ends of which are provided with books 0, to hook into eyebolts a, attached to the posts A. The bars E are supported in a horizontal position by inclined braces F, the upper ends of which are framed into the said bars E. The lower ends of the braces F are beveled to fit against the posts A. Any desired number of the brackets E F may be attached to the posts A, to support fioorings at different elevations, as shown in Fig. 2.
lVhen the soaifold is to be used for outside work, only one side of the scaffold is used. In this case the posts are supported in an erect position by the bars G, the ends of which are provided with hooks g to hook into eyebolt-s a, attached to the posts A. The other ends of the bars Gr rest against the side of the building.
If desired, for greater security, the ends of the bars G may be provided with hook-bolts 9 to hook into eyebolts attached to the building; but this will seldom be necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- A scaffold consisting of four posts, A, connected by two-part oblique braces B B, V-bars O (l, and horizontal bars D D, constructed, arranged, and detachably put together, substantially as shown and described.
FRANKLIN H. l). NEWHARI). lVitnesses:
HENRY HARTMAN, SAMUEL (3. MILLER.
