COMBINATION SMOKING snr AND ADVERTISING nEvIcia Application filed April 17", 1924. Serial No. 707,199.,
To all whom it may concem." A
Be it known that I, HALMER C. KI'rrEL- sorr a citizen of the United-States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and Stateof Minnesota,"have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Gombination Smoking Sets and Advertising De.- vices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and .use the same.-
My invention relates to improvements in devices intended for use by tobacco smokers, for the purpose of holding cigarettes,
matches, ashes, etc.,' and the principal object is to provide an extremely simple device 7 of this character, combined with a tubular container for advertisingdata, road maps or I otherarticles, rovlsion being made whereby the entire evice may be conveniently clamped upon the steering .post of an automobile, or may rest upon a desk or the like, if so desired. It will be seen that anyone wishing to place advertising matter before the public, may either sell the devices or give them to prospective customers, and with each sale, the desired advertising matter will befurnished, compactly held in a position from which it may .be readily removed and inspected from time to time, when needed.
- Thus, an efiective advertising medium is provided, as well as an exceptionally desir able and convenient smoking set.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention upon the steering post of an auto- I mobile.
F ingrset detached from the steering post. igure 3 is a plan view.
Figure 4 is a side elevation. Figure 5 is avertical transverse sectional view as indicated by line 5,-5 of Fig. 3.
In the preferred, form of construction, selected for illustration in the present application, I make use of a horizontally elongated tubular container 1 which ma well be formed from a single sheet of meta with its edges seamed together as indicated igure 2 is an end elevation of the smok- I the strip at 2. At one side of the container 1 and secured to the latter,'is a horizontall elongated channel-shaped holder 3 whic is in most instances, co-extensive in length with said container. In the preferred form' of construction, the holder 3 is bent from a single sheetof metal and comprises a bottom 4, a relativelyfnarrow inner side wall 5, and a comparatively wide, outer side wall 6,
the wall 5 being soldered or otherwise se-- cured as indicated at 7, to the container 1,
the line of attachment being preferably directly under theseam 2.;
In the present showing, the container 1 is open at both ends, and an advertising catalogue, a number of road maps or other desired articles, may be inserted into oneend of said container, a catalogue being indipackageof cigarettes 11,.when held in one end of the holder 3, from accidentally falling endwise out of said holder.
Carried by the holder 3, is an ash receptacle 12 which is preferably formed with arelativelynarrow lowerend 13 frictionally held in said, holder, and with a laterally widened upper end portion 14 which overlies a part of the container 1.. By having the receptacle 12 frictionally held in the holder 3, it may be easily removed to discharge ashes and the-like, and furthermore it may be slid alongsaid holder to engage a package of cigarettes and hold such package tightly confined between the receptacle and The end of the holder 3, remote from the strip 9, is adapted to hold a box of matches, as indicated at;- 15, said end having an upstanding spring tongue 16 co-operable with the wall 6 in frictionally holding the outer casing of the match box, while a'suitable elevated support 17 isf'provided for-the slidable inner part of the match box, so as to hold the latter in the partly opened position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The p'artsJ-(i and 17 are preferably bent from a single strip of sheet metal, soldered or otherwise secured in the holder 3.
A horizontally elongated, transversely arched saddle 18, which is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal, extends transversely under the intermediate portions of the container 1 and holder 3, and this saddle is shown as having straight lower edges 19 which may well rest upon a desk or the like to support the parts. 1 and 3, which are secured to the crown of the saddle, for instance by soldering, as indicated at 20. The saddle 18 is also adapted when desired, to be clamped against the upper side of an automobile steering post, as indicated in Fig. 1. When this is to be done, an adjustable sheet metal collar 21 1s passed over the saddle 18 and around the steering post, said collar having an appropriate bolt or the like 22 by means of which it may be contracted tightly around the st; Preferably, the collar 21 is formed 0 two sections having their ends 23 passed through a slot 24 in a connecting plate 25. Obviously, the size of the collar may be varied by passing the ends 23 through the slots 24, to the desired extent, after which said ends are, bent against the innerzi side of *the plate 25, as detailed in Excellent results may be obtained from the device, whether it is used upon auto; mobiles or merely rests upon a desk or the like. When used in the last named manner, the container 1 may if desired be utilized to hold a pencils, etc.
Excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes in form, proportion and minor details, may be resorted to. a
I claim: I
1. An article of manufacture comprising a horizontally elongated tubular container, a horizontally disposed channel-shaped holder at one side of and secured to said container, and an ash receptacle frictionally held in a portion of said holder, leaving the remainder thereof unoccupied for the reception of other articles, such as a box of matches and a package of cigarettes.
pipe, cigars, pens and 2. A structure. as specified in claim 1;-.
' said ash receptaclehaving a narrow lower end portion frictionally held in said channel-shaped holder and being laterally enlarged at its upper end to overlie the adacent portion of said tubular container.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a horizontally elongated tubular container open at both ends, a horizontally disposed channel-shaped holder co-extensive in length with said container and secured against one side of. the latter, and a strip extending across one end of said container and the adjacent end of said channel-shaped holder channel-shaped automobile steering post or to rest on a desk or thelike.
5. An article of manufacture comprising a channel-shaped holder adapted to retain a package of cigarettes in one end and having a stop at said end to prevent movement of the cigarette package therefrom, and an ash receiver frictionally held in said holder and slidablv movable along the latter to co-operate with said stop in holding the cigarette package against movement longitudinally of said holder.
6. An article of manufacture comprising a horizontally elongated tubular container. a channel-shaped holder at one side of said container comprising a bottom wall, a narrow inner wall secured to the, container, and'a relativelyhigh outer wall, a strip secured across one end of said tubular container and extending also across one end of said holder, a spring tongue in the other end of the holder co-operable with said relatively high outer wall in holding a box of matches, and an ash receptacle partly overlying said tubular container and having a contracted lower end frictionally held in said channel-shaped holder.
7. An article of manufacture comprising a horizontally elongated tubular container, a channel-shaped holder at one side of said container comprising a bottom wall, a narrow inner wall secured to the container, and a relatively high outer wall, a strip secured across one end of said tubular container and extending also across one end of said holder, a spring tongue in the other end of the holder co-operable with said relatively high outer wall in holding a box of matches, an ash receptacle partly overlying In testimony whereof I have hereunto;
ature.
