WRITING INSTRUMENT.
Application filed February 13, 1922. Serial No. 536,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK IVi-unonr',
a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to writing instruments and has for its object the combination of an adjustable load pencil mechanism and a fountain-pen mechanism in a single structure.
Another object of this invention is to provide mechanism which can be actuated by the adjustable pencil mechanism to fill the ink-chamber.

Adjacent to the upper end of the barrel A is a transverse wall A which is preferably integral with the circumferential wall of the barrel A; but if preferred may be secured therein in any other manner. This wall A is provided with a central opening a therethrough. The upper end of the barrel A is provided with internal screw threads a and I preferably place within this upper end of the barrel A, a suitable packing-gland a Engaging, the screw threads at in the upper end of the barrel A is a socket member B which thereby becomes an extension of the barrel A. lVithin the base of the socket member B is permanently and non-rotatably secured a tube 13 which tube extends intov the barrel A through the packing-gland a and opening a in the partition wall A The tube B is preferably provided with a longitudinal opening of square cross-section. Upon the tube B and within the barrel A is placed a piston'C which snugly fits the internal wall of the barrel A; said piston C being both slidable and rotatable upon the tube B.
The piston C is provided with an L-shaped slot 0 which is adapted to receive a transverse pin 12 in the tube B so that when the socket member B is unscrewed fromthe end of the .barrel A and drawn backwardly therefrom, the tube B can be rotated until the transverse pin 6 enters into the slot 0 on'the piston C; and when the transverse pin 7) is engaged in said slot the piston C can be moved longitudinally in the barrel A by means of the tube B.
The-outer end of the socket member B is provided with internal screw threads I) to receive a screw threaded nut B which has a central cylindrical opening 5 *therethrough. Within the cylindrical opening 6 is rotatably mounted a conical pencil point D which is provided with a longitudinal screw threaded opening D in which a lead-holder (Z is placed, which is provided with a nut d adapted to engage the internal threads in said pencil point D. This nut d is provided with'a stem d preferably of square cross-section adapted to fit and slide in the ion itudinal opening of the tube B, but Whlch will not rotate therein.
The pencil point D is also provided with a screw threaded nipple d upon which a till ring-nut E is placed adapted to retain the point D in the nut B and allow relative rotation of the pencil point D in the nut B The pencil lead F is secured in the leadholder (Z and extends therefrom through a suitable opening in the point D, and when it is desired to move the lead F longitudinally in the point D, the point D is rotated, which causes the nut cl, which intern'ieshes with the internal threads in the longitudinal opening D to travel longitudinally in said opening thereby giving the desired movement to the lead F.
When it is desired to clean the pen the socket B is unscrewed from the barrel A and withdrawn backwardly therefrom until the transverse pin 5 is properly engaged in the L-shaped slot 0 in the piston C, when, by means of the longitudinal movement of the piston C in the barrel A water can be drawn inwardly and ejected from the barrel A. Likewise the barrel A can be filled with ink.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of this invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the exact mechanism shown and described, as many modifications can be made therein without departing from the scope of my invention;
therefore, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. In a writing instrument a hollow handle adapted to contain'writing fluid, and having an internally threaded socket in the end thereof, a tube centrally secured into said hollow handle, a lead pencil feeding mechanism comprising a lead-holder and feeding screw adapted to be screwed into said socket, and a stem on said feeding screw adapted to non-rotatably telescope in said tube.
2. Ina writing instrument, a hollow-handle having a socket in the end thereof, a tube secured centrally in the bottom of said socket and extending therefrom into said hollow handle, a nut adapted to be non-rotatably secured in said socket, a tapered end member having an internally threaded bore in said member rotatably mounted in said nut, a rearwardly extending shank on said tapered end member, a collar screwed on said shank back of said nut, a lead-holder engaging said internally threaded bore, and a stem on said lead-holder slidably and nonrotatably extending into said tube.
