CONVERTIBLE "BLAKE,
Application filed May 5, 1924. Serial No. 711,167.
To @ZZ fur/rom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, ARTHUR l). Tnnrnm., a citizen ot the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ot Los Angeles and State et California, have invent/effi new and useful improvements in Convertible Planes, oil which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to hand planes and consists of the novel features herein shown,
described and claimed.
An object is to make a hand plane having a central plane element and having extension members which may be readily applied to either or both ends oi the central element. Another object is to combined with a plane, one or two extension members which may be optionally connected to one or both ends of the plane.
Other objects and advantages will appear trom the drawings and specication.
rl`he drawings illustrate a plane embodying the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view ot a plane 7* embodyingr the principles et my invention, the view being taken looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation as indicated by tie arrow 2 in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a vert-ical cross section on the lines 3-3 oit Figs. 1, 2 and et, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. Il is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal. section on the lines lr-l of Figs. 1 and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one ot the extension members shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. G is a vertical longitudinal sectional ifi detail on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5, and lookingl in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The details of the plane embodyingthe principles of my invention as shown in the drawings are as follows:
The central plane element 1 may be of any ordinary construction so lar as the planing `features are concerned and so tar as it is to be used as a short plane. In earrying out my invention an extension member 2 is removably applied to each end of the plane element 1 so that the plane element 1 may be lengthened at either or both ends, or may be used without lengthening.
The plate 3 of the plane element 1 having the bearing face 4 for engaging the worlr also has a 'dat upper face A central internally screw threaded and externally inished lug; 6 extends upwardly from the tace 5. Ledges 7 and S extend inwardly from the upper parts et the sides 9 and 10, said sides 9 and 10 extending upwardly 'l'rorn the side edges ot the plate 3 and the lower faces 11 of the ledges 7 and 8 are slightly tapered or inclined from the outer ends 12 inwardly and downwardly, thus 65 making wedge shaped seats 13 and 14;.
rlhe extension member 2 has a fiat plate 15 adapted to aline with the plate 3 and has sides 16 and l? adapted to aline with the sides 9 and l0. A shank 18 has a plate 19 70 osetupwardly relative to the plate 15 and .tits upon the face 5. A tapered Central opening` 20 is formed at the center ot the plate 19 and a slot 21 extends from the inner end of the plate 19 tothe opening 2O so that 75 the lug' G will pass through the slot 2l. The plate 1S) has sides 9.2 and Q3 offset relative to the sides 16 and 17 so as to lit between the sides t) and 10, and the sides 2Q and 23 have upper inclined faces 9.4: and to .it 6U the lower faces 11 ot the ledges 7 and 8 like wedges. i
The handle 2b' is mounted upon a shank 27 and held in place by a. screw 9,8, and a stud bolt 9.9 is mounted in the shank 27 to screw into the lug` (l. A cone 30 is formed upon the lower end olf the shank 27 concentric to the stud 29, and has an inner recess to receive the lug 6 and an outer tapered face 31 to engage in the tapered openingjl 2O 90 so that when the handle Q6 is manipulated t'o screw the cone E30 down the tapered tace 31 oi? the @one engaging; the tapered opening;l 2O will draw the wedges 29. and 23 firmly into the seats 13 and lll and hold the 95 estensioni 2 tight and rigid upon the elei'nent 1.
ldhile l have shown in detail and described the right hand extension member 2 in Figs. 1 and 2, it is to be understood 100 that the left hand extension member 2 is constructed and applied in the saine way. The handle 26 serves in operating the main plane element 1 when the extension members are disconnected, and the extension members are readily applied by manipulating either handle.
Thus I have produced a plane having a central plane element which is complete in itself to be used as a short plane, and havno ing extension elements which may be :Lppliedto either or both ends of JL-he centre-.i piane element desired.
Various Changes may be inade Without departing' from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I Claim:
l. A piane having seats and n centering ing, nn extension ineniber fitting the Seats and having n cenering opening, a, Cone fit-ting the centering ing and centering opening, u handle upon the cone, and n sind boit Carried by the'handie. to screw into the centering' lng to clamp the parte together.
2. A. piane having Seats and n centering lug, an extension member fitting the sente and h fing n centering slot leading to a eentering opening, a` cone fitting the centering ing and centering opening, n handle upon the cone, and ineensi for connecting the hundie to the centering ing to chnnp the parte together.
3. A pinne having tapered seats :1nd e cen- 1teringv ing, an extension member having uw pered sides to fit the seats and haring e eenering slot lenvdino' to a centering opening, n conev fitting' the centering lng and centv opening7 a handle upon the Cone, and n i for Connecting the handle io the cento-i, lng to clamp the parte together.
in estiinony Whereoi hav signed inj; naine co this specification.
