Application filed December 8, 1922. Serial No. 605,650.
To f//ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. RUTTEN- enne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago7 in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented lnew and useful improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a speciucation.
rlhis invention relates to lamps, and more particularly to distinctive artistic lamps which embody in the pedestal construction pottery vases or the like, and an object of the invention is to provide means for securely holding the vase in place, and for bracing the vase, the said bracing` structure being artistically arranged to add to the attractiveness ot the appearance of the vase.
Other objects of the invention will appear inv the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. l is a side elevation ot' a lamp constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line of Fig. l with the. shade removed.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a modified form of the lamp illustrating` the manner of embodying a pottery .vase in a Vfloor lamp pedestal.l
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are side elevations ol". modilied forms of the lamp structure.
Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line SFS ott Fig. 7.
Referring more particularly to the drawin the improved lamp structure comprises the vase l which may be of any desired shape, construction or iinish. The base 2 ot the vase l is drilled. to provide an opening 3 which aligns with the mouth of the vase and a standard preferably in the `'form of a pipe 4 extends longitudinally through the vase, extending through the opening 3 in the bottom 2 and upwardly through the mouth of the vase. The pipe 4 may have any approved type of head 5 such as used in lamps, mounted thereon and it also may be extended or constructed so as to provide the usual. term of shade attachment, and clamp or nial as shown at 6. The pipe 4 is holy the end of the tube ll while the pressure,
at the bottom of the base will also be against the lower end of the tube llthereby re-y lieving the vase l of any pressure. which would tend to break it.
Ornaments 14 constituting a vase guard are attached to the base 8in any suitable manner such as soldering and theseorna-l ments, in Figs. l to 3 of the drawings comprise metal leaves or flowers. The leaves 14 extend upwardly along the vase l' and it will be noted by particular reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that these metal leaves hug or fit tightly against the outer surface of the vase at spaced points serving the dual function of bracing the vase as well as ornamenting it in the lamp construetion.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings a floor lamp structure is shown which comprises the pedestal. 2O upon the lower endof which a base 2li is provided. The pedestal 2O comprises in this constructiona standard preferably in the form of a'pipe 22 which corresponds with the pipe 4, a tube 23 which encloses the .pipe and the main tubular body 24 which rests on the base and encloses the tube 23. The base 21 is provided with au opening 25 through which the pipe 22 eX- tends and Vthe lower end of the pipe 22 is threaded and has a nut 26 mounted thereon 'to permit the clamping ot the mushroom 27 tightly in place about the. mouth of the vase 28 which is embodied in the lamp pedestal structure. the lamp pedestal 20 hasV a saddle or socket Amember 29 at its upper end which correspends to the base 8 in that the base ot the vase 28 rests there against. Leaves or a husk as shown at 30 is formed upon the member 29 to constitute a vase guard and extends upwardly about the exterior ot the. base of the vase 28 adjacent its base yfor serving the dual *function of ornainenting The tubular body 24 of ioo the lainp structure and bracing` the vase exh teriorly. l
ln Fig. 5 ot the drawings a slight inodilication of the invention lisshovvn in which the plate 40 upon Which the vase tl rests is elevated troni the basev 42 being supported above the base 42 by a standard preferably in the forni of a tubular yor pipe like constructioni and the legsAA, which legs are constructed of ironand ornainented to addv to the attractiveness of. the design vor appearance, ot .the lainp, Metal leaves or analogous decorating ineinbersli are ornied integrally with vthe legs 4d andextend upwardly .thereiroin, to constitute a guard embracing the exterior ot the vase all adjacent lits lovverportion.,
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, the vase ,50 is ei'nbracedand ornainented by a guard :in the lfornirci? inetal stein. or vine ,5l Which extends spirally about, the vase and has leaves ,andI flowers thereon `to add t0 the attractiveness'ot the design, The stein 5l inayiwbe soldered. or otherwise suitably` attached to the base 52.
vFigs 7 vand 8 show a further inodilied foi'iii..;of the invention in which the supportingplate GO is supported about the base structureel in the saine manner in which the vplate, 4t() is supported. The. base 6l, however, is in turir Supported above the structure.uponavhich .the lanipvvvill ,rest by the .metal legs..62`, Whichjlelejs are turned in as shown. aty 63 to provide tlienecessary supporting, surfaces. yor shoulders :for Athe plate ,6.0. Arnia 64C. Which constitute avase guard ,are eorined .ot instal, and integra-l with the legs G2 and rise troni the legs,
veinbracing' the vase .G6 at spaced points about its outer surt'ace;v It is to be.understood.that the arms Gstinaybe decorated or constructed in anydesiig'ed artistic manner so as to add to the lappearance ot the lanip structure. The arnis, 64: are connected one to vanother short distan-ces `belou7 their uppelriends by a 'ase encircling; ba-nd67 which tightly hugs the ivaseyand cooperates With the arins- 6ft in bracingit and ,preventing liability oi breakage, during handling or shipment ot the lamp structure. f
Froinfthe ,foregoingdescription taken in connectioi'r 'with, the accompanying drawings it will be apparent, that wherein vthe several inoditied orins of thelainp structures the combination of the instal ornaments or decorating` ineansWith-the .pottery vase is carried out and that the 'said inetal ornainents lare arranged not only to ornament or add to the artistic value of the lanip but also to brace and protect the pottery vase.
It. is, ot course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other inair ners and the parts.associated in dii'l'erent relations and, therefore, I do notv desire to be liinited in any nianner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
' Having` thus described my invention what I claiin is: i
y l ln a lainp, a pottery vase, a lbase inA eluding` a plate upon which the vase rests, a pipe projecting centrally 'through the vase and extending through said plate, 'a niush` rooin, on saidpipe and engaging the top ot the vase, a nut threaded on the pipe `and. engagingthe under surfaces of saidv plate.
for clainpinibi` the platev and inushrooin tightly against the base yand inouth ot the vase respectively,.and a vtube 4on said pipe and enoaging said plate and inushrooin to;
prevent crushing oit the vase.
In. a lamp, a pottery vase, bassincluding; a plate upon which the vase rests, a pipe projecting centrally through the vase and extending throughsaid plate, a
inushroonron said pipe and engaging the ytop ot the vase, a nut threaded. on the pipe,
and eno'aging. the under surfaces et' said "ir clamping the plate and inushrooni y agaii it" the base .andinouth oi" the vase respectively7 and a tube on said pipe and engaging; said plate .and innshroorn to prevent crushing ot the vase, and inetal ornaments carried by said base and yextending upwardly al'iout and embracing the exterior oi the vase.,
3. Ther combination in a lamp structure, oit' a base, a standard connected to and rising` 'troni the base and adapted to carry a. lainp head, a vase surrounding'. the standard, and an artistic guard supported on the base. and .receiving the vase.
in testimony' whereof I aliixiny signature, u
