Description

in U Another PatentedMar. 24,
.W' WILL YEiRGER, F PHILADELZBHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PACKAGE TIE.
.A nm tioneia. was 1 1 1924. Serial no. 743,045.
To all whom itm-(rz concern;
3e it known'that I; ieu Yearn ng a citi- 1 75911 of the United States. residing at"'Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ofPennsylvania; have invehted new and useful Improvements in Package Ties, of which the jl OllCfiv'lDg lS a specification.
This invention relates tofimprovemen'tsf in package'ties tors'ecuring' packages of mail matter, merchandise and the like, and is an extensive-'- improvement on the package tie as disclosed 'by my Patent No. 1,351,134.
The primary object of this invention is'to provide apackage tie designed foruse in the Post O'tlice Department and like service, to be used 111 theplace of binding twme for tying packages of mail or merchandise to he sent to substations or other desired places... i I i object is to provide a package tie which prevents the cord thereof from becoming entangled and knotted when not in use, the cord being adequately protected to prevent this'danger.
A further obzect to'provide a package tie that will hold securely one or more lettors and the like, and can be used with equal facilities by either a right or left handed operator, without instructions as to its use, the device being extremely simple, yet efiicient for the purpose intended.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts. to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters. denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figured is a perspective view showing a iackage tied by my improved device.
D through the package tie per se. i m
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the means for receiving thelcord, which'is illustrated-by dottedlines.
Referring to the drawingsin detail the Fi ure 2 is a transverse sectional. view letter A indicates a package tied the package tie forming the 'subjectmatter of the present invention. I
The cord 1 when not extended for tying purposesas well as that portionoi' the cord thecover 4 as shown.
.package. frictional engagement the cover and the whiehf is. not in use when thepackage tie is i in opel' 'ative. position as shown in Figure 1,
housed in the casing 12 which conisistsof a lower cup shapedportion' 3 having its upper outer edge screw threaded for receiving A I The' covers; isv provided with a centrally disposed opening 5 to provide a bearingsurface for aportion of theshank of a screw Gwhich is provided withaknurled head' 'i whose under portion is provided with a cam surface 8 opera't-ively associated with the cover 4;, for a purpose which will be presently described. The greater portion of the shank of the screw is threaded for receiving a reel 9 which is secured to the shank to turn withthe screw, 1n the bearmg formed 1n the cover for the shank.
The reel is solid and a bore 10 is formed therethrough adjacent one side of the central portion thereof, one end. of the bore has its outer edge rounded as at 11 to prevent damage to the cord 1 which is adapted to be passed through. the bore and have one end knotted which is received in the recess 2 disposed at the opposite end of the bore 10 as clearly disclosed in Figure 3 of the drawings. The cord extends from the casing through the medium of an opening 18 formed in the side walls of the cup shaped portion 3.
The operation of the device forming the subject matter of the present invention is extremely simple and issuggested by the drawings. The cord 1 is secured. to the reel as above set forth and is payed off as desired, depending of course upon the amount to be used for tying a predetermined size The reel is under tension by the cup shaped portion 3 contacting the upper and lower surface thereof, and this tension may be varied by adjusting the cover through the medium of its screw threaded connection with the cup shaped portion. The payed out cord is then arranged around the package in the usual manner and the free end of the cord secured by engagement with the cam surface of the screw head and the cover as suggested in Figure lot the drawings. If the cord is too loose after the above operation is performed the screw can be turned to take up slack.
It is thought fromthe fore-going description that the; advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A package tie of the character de scribed comprising a casing provided with an opening formed in its side wall, a reel mounted for frictional rotatable movement within the casing, and a cord secured to the reel and passing through the opening as and for the purpose specified.
2. A package tie of the character described comprising a casing, a reel rotatably mounted therein, a headed screw secured to the reel for the operation thereof and being provided with a cam surface, the cord secured to the reel and adapted to have its free end operatively associated with the cam surface and casing respectively as and for the purpose specified.
3. A package tie of the character described comprising a casing, a cup shaped portion included therein,-and being provided with an opening formed in its side Wall, the cover for the cup shaped portion being provided with a centrally disposed opening forming the bearing, a a headed screw having a portion of its shank threaded and its remaining portion arranged in the bearing for rotatable movement, a reel in the casing and receiving the threaded end of the'shank to be rotated thereby,- and a cord secured to the reel and passed through the opening in the side Wall for operative association with the screw and cover.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
WILL YERGER.
