VICTOR MLLER, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGNOE OE ONE-HALE To JOHN srivnvIoNs COMPANY, or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OE NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOB CUTTING THREADS ON TUBESk AND FOB CUTTING OFF TUBES.
Application filed November 8, 1921.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VICTOR MLLER, a citizen of the German Republic, and a resident of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in `the iStats of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cutting Threads on Tubesand for Cutting @ff Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe present invention relates to a combined threading and cutting Off machine for tubular bodies, and has for its purpose to provide Va machine of that character wherein the piece to be worked may be threaded on both ends at the same time and cut without removing the piece from its originally secured position, thereby considerably reducing the cost of manufacture of this material and-considerably expediting the time in which the work may be done, and wherein the cost of installment may be considerably reduced, because the apparatus can be easily attached on any present pipe lthreading machine, using hereby all the frame and driving and clamping parts of the same and scrapping only the old diehead, in whose place the object of the invention will be installed.
The apparatus forming the subject matter of this invention performs all these op'-v erations, that is, threading two ends of pipe at the same time and thereafter cutting oft' the finished piece, entirely automatically and thereafter stops the functioning of the apparatus, thus informing the operator when the stock or material has to be shifted and reclamped in the machine. These automatic. functions of my new apparatus enable the operator to attend a number of machines at the same time because his only service will be in removing and clamping the material stock. ,n
lith these advantages, the present invention embodies other points of merit, which will be set forth in the course of the following extended description and the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein is shown the invention in its preferred embodiment:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional `view of the machine,v
Fig. 52l is a cross-sectional view on the line Serial No. 513,710.
Fig. 3, is a top plan view of the machine, Fig. i is a front elevation thereof,
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View, on the line of Fig; 1.
Fig. lo is an enlarged fragmentary secn tional view taken on line v6--6 of Fig. V1, showing the lead screw and ,cooperating plate for effecting the axial feeding ofthe tools, and
Fig. A7 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the cam-controlled clutch lever latch mechanism.
Referring to the several figures in detail, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts of the different figures shown, the structure comprises a die-head 1, having cross-wise guideways, within which is mounted to move, tool-carrying toolholder 27 with a straight circular threading tool 28, toolholder 29 with a taper, circular threading tool 30, toolholder 31 with a taper circular threading tool 32 and toolholdcr 33 Awith a vcircular cutting off tool.
0n said die-head1 is rotatably mounted aA cylindrical tubular body 2, having mounted on the same a sp-urgear 3 and having further a number of adjustable setscrews 35 for the later described action on the threading tools, and having further a number of setscrews 36 for the later de scribed action in the cutting off tools.
A circular body 4 having a spurgear, is fastened on said die-head 1 and is provided with a slot 26 for a purpose, to be later set forth'.
With. said spurgear 3 on tubular body 2 is connected 'an idler gear 5, having clutch teethA 5a, and. also said spur-gear on the circular body 4 is connected with an idler gear 6, having clutch teeth 6a. Said idler gears 5 and @are rotatably mounted on a stud 7 which is fastened on headstock 22 of the machine. On said stud 7 is fastened a stop collar 8 with a stop shoulder 8a. A catch 9 slidably mounted on a clutch lever 10 presses against said collar 8 and holds the said clutch lever 10 with the gear 5 last in working position. A shaft 11 mounted rigidly with said clutch lever 10, is also con nected with a handlever 12 on which a spring 13 is connected, said'spring 13 at its other end is fastened to a stud 14, which is fastened on said headstock 22. A double pin 1G is slidably mounted in said tubular body 2, with its one end against said catch 9, Whileitsother endis guidingly pressed against .anumber of cams, y1a onsaid die-` head 1.

the threading tools. By means of the successively longer setscrews in body 2, and the repeated deeper cuts of thread, finally brings the thread on to work piece 4() to the desired finish. After this, the continued rotary movement of tubular body 2 and diehead 1 brings a sufficient release of the lead-screw parts thus keeping the inner spindle 17 with the apparatus in the rear position for a. length of time, sulicient ,for the necessary operation of cutting the piece in the desired length.
rllhis will be accomplished by still continu ing rotation of tubular body 2 and die-head 1, whereby set-screw 36 bearing against the outer end face of toolholder 33, which toolholder with its cutting ofil tool 34 is guided against the piece 40 to be worked. Thus the cutting od tool 34 severs the finished piece 40 from the pipestock, after which the double pin 1G, by means of cam 1all on diehead 1 is pressed against the catch 9 and moves the same downwards, thereby releasing the same from the stop-shoulder 8'rl of stop collar 8. This movement allows the heretofore compressed spring 13 to become effective moving the handlever 12, whereby the clutch lever 10 disengages the gears and (i, by removing the clutch teeth 5n out of clutch teeth 6, Continued rotation of tubular body 2 on die-head 1 is now stopped until handlever 12 is again actuated to start the operation of the apparatus for working on the next work piece 40.
For the purpose of guiding the thread ing tools in continued outward or inward movements according to tapered thread, the toolholders 29 and 31 are each provided with a tapered outside face, on which the set screws 35 are guided thus reducing or enlarging the distance of the threading tools 3() and 32 from the surface of the piece 40, and accomplishing thereby a perfect and smooth tapering thread.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
