UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMns H. PARKHURST, on ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE-TIES FOR BAGS, BALES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,860, dated July 7, 1874; application filed December 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns H. PARKHURST, of St. Louis, St. Louis county, Missouri, have invented a certain Improvement in WireTies for Bags, Bales, &c., of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of a spring-clasp formed of two jaws united together by one or more rounded spring bends, the whole being formed of a single piece of metal. One jaw has a loop or eye, to which, when the tie is used on bags, the cord is attached. When the tie is used upon bales of cotton, hemp, hay, &c., one end of the hoop-wire may be formed into the tie, and the other end secured thereon in the same manner as the cord.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention when used as a bag-tie. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention when used as a bale-tie. Fig. 3 is a side view of the form shown in Fig. 2.
The tie consists'of two jaws, A B, united by one or more rounded springbends, O, tendin g to hold the jaws in contact at the inner end of the mouth m. The outer end of the jaw A is turned outward into a ring, a, which assists in guiding the cord into the mouth m, in making it fast to the tie. The jaw B has a loop, 5, for attachment of the fixed end of the cord when used as a bag'tie, as shown in Fig.
1. In Figs. 2 and 3 the device is shown as used for a bale tie or fastening. In this case it may be formed of one end of the hoop-wire, (passing around the bale,) the other end being secured to the former end in the same manner as a cord.
This tie is of wide application, being suita= ble in most cases where it is desired to make fast a light cord or line, and the attachment and disengagement may be made with ease and speed. Its hold upon the cord is secure, because any strain upon the latter tends to draw the end of the cord into the mouth m. It is untied by withdrawing the end from the month.
In making fast the cord or wire is wound one or more times around the jaws at d, and its end d is then drawn into the mouth m (between the jaws A B) to clamp it fast. The spring-bend G prevents the turn 01 from slipping off.
I claim as new and of my invention The tie consisting of the jaws A B, and spring-bend G, constructed and arranged substantially asset forth.
JAMES H. PARKHURST.
