To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that( I, FRANK X'. LAUTER- BUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sidney, in the'county of Shelby Vl! and State of hio,.have inventedI certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Clips and Processes of Manufacture, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description, reference being had to the accompany- 1o ing drawing, forming part of this specification. The object of my invention is to provide a construction of clip for fastening together loose-paperswhich shall he exceedingly ef- 41&5 fective and at the same time very cheap to manufacture, and in which a maximum number of clips can be formed out of a mini mum` amount of material. y
The invention consists of that novel con- 20. struction and method of forming the clips in nested series, graded as to size, as will be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed, whereby a maximum number of sizes may be produced simultaneously by a .single operation of the forming dies.
In the drawings: i Figure 1 is a plan view showing a pluralit of clips of diiferent sizes as formed by t e cutting and punching dies, prior to folding. v
Figures 2, 3 and 4 areplan views of the three blanks shown in Figure 1, separated from each other.
views of the three clips as shown in Figures 2 4 folded and'ready for use.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the lines 5 -5 of Figure 1.
' llhe clips are formed from suitable re- 40 silient sheet metal which is cut' and punched in a single operation as shown in Figure 1, which comprises three clip blanks l, 2 and 3. Of course any number of these blanks can be cut Within the limits of the largest size desired. -v l As shown the clip blanks are oval' in shape, as possibly preferable, but the blanks could also be cut'rectangular in shape so that there would be Vno Waste of material whatever in cutting u the blank sheet of metal. The innermost o the clip blanks 3 is for the smallest size and this is formed with a lon# o gitudinal cut 4 down the middle. This innermost blank is formed also with a pair of prongs punched out of the'metal, one on each side of the middle cut with the prongs lili?" facing cach other, while thegother clip A blanks 1 'and 2 ,have a pair of these prongs 7, 8 facing each other, on earch nide'arM ranged in diagonal relation. The lower end of each clip blank is also turned outwardly to forni a liftin tongue 9.
The clip blan s, as a .final operation, are
given aA transverse central bend, so as to bring the ends back` to back with the tongued end on top as shown i`n Figures il,
resiliency and this turning of the blanlrri back to back brings the prongs 7 and facl and 8. The central bend 10 gives ampie which consists in cutting from a sheet of spring sheet metal a plurality of clip blanks in nested series from the smallest to the largest size, and theny folding thel nested blanks back to back and separating them to producev the finished clips. Figures 6, 7l and 8 are respectively side 2. The method of producing paper clips, which consists in cutting from. a sheet of spring sheet metal a plurality ofvclip blanks in nested series from the smallest to the largest sizewitl1 oppositel faced prongs in eac blank, and then fo ding the nested blanks bac to back and separating them to produce the finished clips.
As a new article of manufacture, a paper clip of resilient sheet metal of oblong sha c with the 'central ortion removed and.
fol ed `transversely bac r to back to form the clip. o
4. 'As a new article of manufacture, :l paper clip of resilient sheet metal oblong in shape, with the central portion remrmcd and having prongs in the side portions faced in opposite directions and folded transrcreol,V "'i t0 form the clip with the prongs facing in wardly in the same direction. A A
