Z'o all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CLAUDE J. Hon-ems, a citizen of the United States, residin at South Orange, in the county of Essex, tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Are Guttin and Welding Apparatus, of which the fol owin is a description, reference being had to t 1e accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
In my Patent 1,305,363 granted to me June 3, 1919, I have shown and described various transformers suitable for metallicare cutting and welding apparatus and have claimed therein, in particular, a transformer of this type provided with adjust-' able flux regulating means for varyin the inductive effects of the windings o thee transformer.
The present application is directed specifically to the form of invention disclosed in Fig. 4 of said patent.
It has been found that an alternating current system which utilizes alternating current at the welding arc, possesses many advantages over the direct current are and m certain classes of work it is desirable to have a voltage, at the instant of startin the are, considerably higher than the vo tags so required to maintain the are after it has been started, but in some cases it is desirable to reduce this open circuit volta e previous to starting the are so that t e o erator will not get any serious shocks, shou d he accidentally come in .contact with the exposed electrodes.
It'isan object of this invention to provide a transformer which 'will have a comparatively low open circuit voltage previous to striking the arc. 4
Other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art after reading the specification and claims.
In the accom anying drawing, 1 indicates a transformer avmg three legs 2, 3 and 4 of which theleg 4 is much smaller in cross section than the other two. Wound about the leg 2 are two'windings: a primary winding 5 provided with a multiplicity of tii ps 6, and a main secondary winding 7. e main'seeondary winding is connected at one end to an electrode 8 and at the other end to a stabilizer or a stead turn-or turns 9 wound about the yoke o theitransformer. The stabilizer in turn is connected to an auxiliary secondary winding 10 wound about the middle le 3 of the transformer and the latter win ing is connected to a voltage re ulatin'g coil 11 on the leg 4, said last named coil being wound in opposition to the auxiliary secondary winding. It is of course understood that the coil 11 may be made in sections connected to one another in series and provided with suitable taps. The-free end of the voltage regulating coil is connected to the-remainin electrode 12. In the primary circuit is ridged a fan motor 13 drivin the operation of cool the same.
Bridged across the main and auxiliary secondary windings is a non-inductive resistance in the form of avlamp 15 which serves the double function of assisting in absorbing the kick voltage of the secondary circuit when the arc is broken and which also serves as a pilot'li ht to indicate that current is flowing in t e secondary circuit after the the transformer serves to primary switch has been closed, thus tell-- ing the operator that the weldin electrode usually carried in a handle, is ready.

' With the primary circuit closed and with the electrodes separated, the primary coil 5 sets up a flux threading the coils 7, 9, 10
and 11 the voltage of the coils 7, 91nd 10' bein in phase on open circuit. The coil 11, .owever, opposing the remaining coils subtracts its vo tage and as a result, if theelectrode terminals be accidentally touched, no ap reciable shock will be felt. During the welding operation of the transformer, the voltages of the coils 9 and 10 shift in phase with respect to the voltage-in the coil 7 and with each other and the resulting and total operating -voltage is therefore less than the open circuit voltage.
Having thus described my invention what I claim -1s:
1. An apparatus for metallic arc cutting and welding including a transformer having a three legged core, a primary winding wound on one core leg and a multi-part secondary wound with a part on each of the legs and all connected'in series with each other and in circuit with are cutting and welding electrodes.

All arc welding system comprising a transformer includlng a core member, primary and secondary windings mounted thereon, a plurality of auxiliary windings mounted upon the core member and so connected to the secondary winding as to be automatically-excluded from the main magnetic circuit when current is flowing in the secondary winding and a plurality of electrodes connected in the-secondary-circuit.
9. An arc welding system comprising a transformer including a core member, primary and secondary windings mounted thereon, a plurality of stationary auxiliary windings so mounted upon the core member and connected to the secondary winding as to be, automatically excluded from the mam magnetic circuit when current is mary and secondary windings mounted thereon, a plurality of auxiliary windings mounted upon the core member and connected to the secondary winding as to be transformer including a core member, priexcluded from the main magnetic circuit when current is flowing in the secondary winding and a plurality of electrodes connected in the secondary circuit.
11. An arc welding system comprising a transformer including a core member, primary and secondary windings mounted thereon, a plurality of stationary auxiliary windings s'o' mounted upon the core member and connected to'the secondary winding as v to be excluded from the main magnetic circuit when current is flowing in the secondary ,winding and a plurality of electrodes connected in thesecondary circuit.

An arc welding system comprising a transformer including-a core, member, primary and secondary windings mounted thereon, an auxiliary Winding so mounted upon the core member and connected to the secondary winding as to be excluded from the main magnetic circuit when current is flowing in'the secondary winding and a pluralityr of electrodes connected in the secondary circuit. An arc welding system comprising a transformer, including a core member, primary and secondary windings mounted thereon, an auxiliary stationary winding so mounted upon the core member and connected to the secondary winding as to be excluded from the main magnetic circuit when current is flowing in thesecondary windin and a plurality of electrodes connected 1n the secondary circuit.

An apparatus for and welding including a transformer having a three legged core, a primary winding on one core leg, a partof the secondary on the same core leg with the primary and another part of thesecondary on a second leg of the transformer-and a further part of the secondary on the third leg of the transformer, which latter leg acts as a magnetic shunt to the second'mentioned part of the secondary.
15. An apparatus for metallic are cutting and welding including a transformer'having a three legged core, a primary winding on one leg of the core, a main secondary Winding on the same leg as the primary, an auxiliary part of the secondary winding on another le of the core and a regulating winding on iethird leg of the transformer, the main secondary, auxiliary secondary and metallic are cutting regulating winding all being connected in series.
16. An apparatus for metallic are cutting and welding including a transformer having a three legged core,a primary winding on one core leg and a multi-part secondary wound with a part on each of the legs and all connected in series with each other and in circuit with are cutting and welding electrodes, the winding on one of said le portions acting under load to set up a ux in a direction acting to prevent a substantial amount of the flux set up by the primary from entering said leg portion.
' 17. An apparatus for metallic are cutting and welding including a transformer having a plurality of core legs, a primary winding and a part of the secondary windin on one core leg, another part of the secon ary on another core leg, and a third portion of the secondary on another core leg, which latter core leg is in permanent shunt relation to the second mentioned core leg.
