To all who/m, it may concern.:
Beit known that I, NELSON DE CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey,.have invented new and useful Improvements in Cord Take-Ups, of which the following is a specification.
This inventio-n relates to means for talring up slack in cords or flexible tubes such as used on electric irons, gas irons, telephones, etc.
The principal object is to produce a` device of this nature which shall be constructed in a single piece and which may be attached either to the wall or to a tube and will effect a take-up of the slack in the cord in positions to which the iron or other device .may be moved.
Another object` is to construct a device of this nature which shall be simple and cheap to manufacture and highly efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device as applied to an electric' fixture, and
Figure 3 is a front elevatio-n of the device as secured to the wall in juxtaposition to a wall plug.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the entire device comprises a single length yof wire which is formed at 10 into a. cork screw-like portion for receiving the wire, tube or other device to be operated upon. This -portion 10 is at the end of acomparatively straight portion 11 and is normally held in a position approaching the vertical, by means of a helically coiled portion 12. The portion 12 merges into a foot 13 which is bent so as to rest against and form a bearing on the tube 14E when the device is attached to a fixture. The wire is formed beyond the foot into a pair of jaws 15 and 16 .for gripping the tube, the purpose of the bearing or rest 13 being to prevent the weight of the cord on the portion 10, effecting a withdrawal of the jaws 15 and .16 from the tubeA The wire is then conperspective view of the de- Selal N0. 547,508.
ducted upwardly and formed into a pair of jaws 1'? and 18 arranged at right angles to the jaws 15 and 16.
The jaws 17 and 18 are arranged to form eyes 19 and 2O through which screws 21 may be inserted when it is desired to secure the device to a wall or other fiat surface.
It will now be seen that. when the device is attached as shown in either Figure 2 or Figure 3 and any strain is brought to bear on the cord, the portions 10 and 11 will yield so as to permit the free use of the cord. At the same time, when the stress is removed, the cord will be automatically taken up and moved out of the way of the operator.
In the form shown in Figure 2, not only may the device yield vertically but it may be moved about the rod if the stress is applied at an angle to the portions 10 and 11.
lWhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and l therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set vforth nor to anything` less than the whole o* my invention limited only by the appended claims.
`What is claimed as new is I- 1. A device of the class described comprising securing means. a spring element, a standard secured to said spring element, and an electrical wire receiving and retaining; element secured to said standard. said wire receiving and retaining element including a screw portion on the extremity thereof and about which theelectric wire is adapted to be wound.
2. A device of the class described comprising two pairs of jaws arranged at right angles to each other.y and cord supporting means resiliently secued to said jaws. said cord supporting means comprising a radially extending portion having its extremity twisted about which lthe cord is adapted to be wound.
3. A device of the class described comprising a single length of wire bent so as to provide retaining means for said device, a bearing for preventing readily disassociating the retaining means from its support, a spring element, and a wire supporting means secured to said spring element, said wire supporting means including an arm twisted for a portion ofu its length about which an electrical Conductor ie depted to be Wound.
