Description
.I. ELDER.
Draft-Equalizers.
Patented July 7, 18 74;.
, jimmy/07:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JAMES ELDER, OF GARTHAGE, ILLINOIS;
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,733, dated July 7', 1 4 application filed December 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ELDER, of Carthage, Hancock county, Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Triple Trees for Draft-Teams, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to form an improved means of equalized draft for three horses working abreast, both with and without a guidingtongue. The apparatus is made substantially as set forth hereinafter, referring to the drawings accompanying, in which- Figure I is a top view of the apparatus. Fig. II is a vertical section of the same, to show the relations of most of the working parts.
The tongue A extends forward between two of the three horses abreast, and a little to one side of the center. To this a part, B, is attached by bolts 0 D, and projects to one side toward the center line of draft to hold the bolt E. Lever Gr is pivoted by bolt E, and bears at its outer end single-tree F, for one horse. The other end of lever G bears a pin, H, engaging in slot I of lever K, which allows the two levers to swing back and forth on their fixed pivots G E, as the draft of the several horses varies. The lever K is pivoted to part B by bolt 0, and extends to the other side, having the double-tree M attached to its out end. This double-tree bears the singletrees L N for horses, one on each side of the tongue A. The part B is arranged with an elevation at E, to hold lever Gr, so its inner end will rest over lever K, pivoted 011 a lower level. Part B also has a top portion reaching up over lever G to pin E.
To plows and such implements as have no guiding-tongue forward between the horses, part A constitutes the beam, and the part B is rigidly attached thereto instead of a clevis, the top and bottom portions of part B extending directly back from pin E to the top and bottom surfaces of the beam, to which they are attached.
I claim-- 1. Levers G K, pivoted to part B at E l), andconnected by pin H and slot I, and bearing double and single trees M N L F, all combined as set forth.
2. The tongue A and part B, bearing the triple-tree, combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The part B, bolts 0 I), the part A and levers G" K pivoted to' it, all combined. subv stantially' as set forth.
JAMES ELDER.
