Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TANNE- HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abernathy, in the county of Hale and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in a Sucker Rod, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sucker rods and means for coupling the same.
An important object of the invention is to provide a sucker rod of novel construction having great strength and at the same time being comparatively light in weight.
A further object of the invention is the provision of asucker rod of this character having novel coupling means thereon detachably mounted upon the extremities of the rod sections.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a sucker rod of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, very durable and efficient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a section of the sucker rod embodying my invention, Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Figure 3 is a detail view of one of the coupling members,
Figure 4t is a similar view of the other coupling member shown in section, and
Figure 5 is a transverse sect-ion taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generally denotes a section of my improved sucker rod which is substantially in the form of a cross in cross section.
The upper extremity of the sucker rod 10 carries a coupling generally denoted by the numeral 11 composed of a cylindrical shoulder member 12, a body 13 and a pair of extension bars 14 provided with a number of openings, the accompanying drawing showing three openings but the number employed will depend entirely upon the size of sucker rod employed and the work for which it 1924. The lower coupling, denoted by the numeral 16 is composed of a circular body 17 and apair of extension bars 18 provided with openings similar to those formed on the bars 14 of the coupling 11. This coupling is provided with an internally threaded bore 19, adapted to receive the shank 15, formed on the upper coupling 11.
The sucker rod section 10 which is provided with the longitudinal ribs 10 is adapted to receive the coupling members 11 and 16 on the extremities thereof, the oppositely disposed extension bars being positioned adjacent a pair of opposed ribs, the said ribs having openings formed therein aligning with those formed in the extension bars for the purpose of receiving retaining bolts 20 which are secured by nuts 21 and prevent disengagement of the rod sections and couplings.
In use, it is customary to employ a plurality of sucker rod sections in well operations, each section being provided with couplings for the purpose of joining them in compact alignment. In the application of my device the coupling members 11 and 16 are secured to the extremities of the rod sections and the co-acting portions of the couplings joined together thus forming a simple yet efficient joint.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing fromr the spirit of the invention, or the scope ofthe subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim;
1. A device of the character described, comprising a main rod section, a coupling having a body member, a pair of oppositely disposed extension bars formed on the lower portion of the body member, a threaded lshank formed on the upper portion of the body member, a second coupling comprising a body member, a pair of oppositely dis osed extension bars formed on the top o the body member, an internally threaded bore through the said body, and means for connecting the said second coupling with the main rod section.
