Description
A. W. CHILD.
` Machines for Pressing and Squaring Sides-uff Harness-Loups.
No.l'52, 603. Parnfedxune 30,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIcE.
ALBERT IV. CHILD, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT INVIVIACHINES FOR PRESSING` AND SQUARING SIDES 0F HARNESSLOOPS.
Specicationforming part of Letters Patent No. 152,603, dated June 30, 1874; application filed December 8, 1873. l
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. IV. CHILD, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and in the State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing and Squaring Sides of Harness- Loops; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction vand arrangement of a machine for squarin g and pressing the sides of all harness-loops, and for holding the same while the top of the loop is receiving' the top die or impression, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a` longitudinal vertical section, of my machine.
A represents the bedplate, at one end of which is a stationary jaw, B, extending the whole width across the bed-plate. At the base of the jaw B, and extending the whole length of the same, is a recess, a, as shown in Fig. 2. C represents the movable jaw, which slides on the bed-plate A, and is moved back y and forth by means of a screw, D, passing through a flange, E, at the other end of the bed-plate A, and said screw provided at its outer end with a hand-wheel, G, or other suitable means for turning the same. At the base of the movable jaw C is a recess, a, similar to the one on the stationary jaw B. On the bedplate A, between the jaws B C, and extending into said recesses, is a loose wedge, H, for regulating the thickness of the leather at the bottom of the loop tobe pressed. I represents a harness-loop to be pressed. After itis sewed in, in the usual way, a square piece of wood, J, is inserted in the loop, and the loop placed on the bed-plate, or on Vthe wedge H, against the stationary jaw B, and the movable jaw C is brought up against it by means of the screw D, thereby squaring and pressing the sides of the loop.
The faces of the jaws B and C may be made as dies, to make ornamental impressions on the sides of the loop. These jaws also hold the loop while the top of the loop is receiving 4 the top die or impression, which may be put on by a press constructed for the purpose, or by a common hand-vise.
This machine can be used for squaring and pressing the sides of winker as well as all other harness loops. For winker-loops, the recess or space a under the face of the sliding jaw (l 'should be made deep enough te allow the winker part to go under.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the bed-plate A, stationary jaw B, removable jaw (l, each provided with a recess, a, and screwD, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bed-plate A, stationaryjaw B; movable jaw C, each having a recess, a, the screw D, and the wedge H, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have-hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of November, 1873.
EDGAR S. BROWN, l C. L. EvERT.
