BARBER H. M. MEANS FOR APPLYING ANTIOFFSET MATERIAL TO THE FRESHLY PRINTED SIDES OF SHEETS Filed Jan. 31, 1924 Patented ti an, 2?, i925 HUWARD ll/[i BARBER, 0E STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO C. B. COTTRELL &
SONSCOMJPANY, 0F STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
MEANS FOR APPLYING- ANTIOFJESET MATERIAL TO THE FRESHLY-PRINTED SIDES or snnnrs.
Application filed January 31, 1924. Serial No. 689,685.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that l, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen ofthe United ,States, and resident of'Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Applying Antiofiset Material to the Freshly-Printed Sides of Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
in printing presses where slip sheets have been used for separating the printed sheets in the pile to prevent oflsetting and smutting, the printed sheets have been delivered from the press with their freshly printed sides up. It has heretofore been attempted to do away with the use of the slip sheets by applying anti-offset material to the freshly printed side of the web or sheet. To produce the best results the anti-offset material, when in liquid form, must be deposited in a very thin and uniform film upon the freshly printed side of the web or sheet, for, if the anti-odset liquid is permitted to accumulate and drop onto said Web or sheet, it will not only discolor the web or sheet but will cause the sheets to stick together when stacked in a pile, be-
cause of the character of the anti-offset 1i uid used for this purpose.
My present invention is directed to means for so printing the sheets that they may be delivered from the printing mechanism with their freshly printed sides down; and so locating the anti-offset supply device under the sheets that the anti-odset material Will be directly upwardly against the freshly printed sides of the sheets, any excess material which might accumulate in quantities sufficient to form drops, being caused to drop away from instead of onto the sheets the object being to provide means whereby the best class of color printing may be produced and the sheets stacked n piles without the use of interposed slip sheets or the danger of oflsetting or smutting. V
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying draw in which represents in diagram a multico or rotary sheetprinting press with my improvements applied thereto.
'Jihe prnting mechanism is herein shown are located around the underside of the impression cylinder so as to permit the ready delivery of the sheets with their freshly printed sides down.
The sheet feed table is denoted by 10, the
sheet stop by 11 and the sheet feed rotary carrier by 12. This rotary carrier is shown as provided With grippers 13 which are arranged to take the sheets from the table 10 and transfer them to the grippers 14, carried by the impression cylinder 1.
Means for delivering the sheets with their freshly printed sides down are provided, which means in the present instance include the rotary carrier 15' provided with grippers 16, arranged to take the freshly printed sheets from the grippers 14 of the impression cylinder 1 and transfer the sheets to the endless delivery carrier 17 where the sheets may be grasped by the grippers 18.
The means which I have shown for applying the anti-offset material to the freshly printed sides of the sheets is herein shown as comprising a reservoir 19 for a liquid antioffset material, said reservoirbeing located under the sheets and being provided With atomizing nozzles 20, 21, the nozzle 21 being in communication with the source of pressure, (not shown herein) through a supply pipe 22. Thus the anti-offset liquid will be sprayed upwardly onto the freshly printed sides of the sheets in a thin even film as the sheets are delivered from'the printing mechanism; any accumulation of the liquid at the nozzle or any excess supply being allowed to drop away from the sheets instead of onto the sheets, thus preventing any liability of the sheets becoming injured by such excess anti-offset liquid being dropped thereon.
It is obvious that the anti-offset applying device may beused in connection with the printing of sheets either in one ormorc colors on one or both sides, Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; the object being to deliver the sheets with their freshly printed sides down and to direct an anti-offset material upwardly into contact with said freshly printed sidesof the sheets. i
What I claim is z 1. In a printing press, means for printing device located under said sheet for directing an anti-offset material against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
4. In a printing press, means for printing on a sheet, means for delivering the sheet with its freshly rinted side down, and a device located an er said sheet for spraying an anti-offset liquid against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
5. In a multi-color printing press, lneans for printing in multi-color on a sheet, means for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, and means for directing an anti-offset material against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
.6. In a multi-color printing press, means for printin in multrcolor on a sheet, means for deliverm printed side own, and means for spraying an anti-offset liquid against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
7. In a multi-color printing press, means for printing in multi-color on a sheet, means for deliverin the sheet with the freshly printed side own, and a device located under said sheet for directing an anti-offset material against the freshly printed side of i the sheet.
8. a multi-color printing press, means for printing in multi-color on a sheet, means the sheet with the freshly for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, and a device located under said. sheet for spraying an anti-offset liquid against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
9. In a multi-color rotary printing press, means for printing in multi-color on one side of a sheet, comprisingan impression cylinder and its coacting form cylinders located around the underside of the impression cylinder, means for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, and means for directing an anti-offset material against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
10. In a multi-color rotary printing press, means for printing in multi-color on one side of a sheet, comprising an impression cylinder and its coacting form cylinders located around the underside of the impression cylinder, means for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, :.Il(\ means for spraying an anti-offset liquid against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
11. Ina multi-color rotary printing press. means for printing in multiI-color on one side of a sheet, comprising arr impression cylinder and its coacting form cylinders located around the underside of the impression cylinder, means for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, and a device located under said sheet for directing an anti-offset material against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
12. In a multi-color rotary printing press, means for printing in multi-color on one side of a sheet, comprising an impression cylinder and its coacting form cylinders located around the underside of the impression cylinder, means for delivering the sheet with the freshly printed side down, and a device located under said sheet for spraying an anti-offset liquid against the freshly printed side of the sheet.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 29th day of January, 1924-.
HOWARD M. BARBER.
