IQACHINE FOR TREATING SAND AND SIIYIILAR MATERIAL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNE E. MINioH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lilachines for Treating Sand and Similar lvtaterial, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thls speciiication;
M y invention relates to machines for treating sand and similar material, and par ticularly to machines for treating sand used in foundries to prepare it for reuse.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, practical'and advantageous machine of the class specified.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine especially adapted for treating foundry sand for reuse.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and improved, mechanisms for treating or cutting the sand for reuse.
In the arrangement herein shown for carrying out my invention, I provide sand cutting cylinder mechanism for cutting and blending the sand, and also provide a traveling sand discharging or throwing device arranged to receive sand from the sand cutting mechanism and dis charge or throw it from the machine. Preferably the sand throwing or discharging device is so constructed as to further treat. or cut the sand.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine of the class specified embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of device; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 show a machine having a body frame 1, mounted on front wheels 2 and rear Wheels 3. An electric motor 4 is provided for driving the front wheels 2, the power transmitting connection being conveniently a worm and wheel arrangement 5, a sprocket chain 6 running from the same to a sprocket 7 011 a shaft 8 and another sprocket chain 9 running to a sprocket wheel 10 on the axle 11 of the wheels 2.

At the front end of the machine is mounted rotary sand cutting cylinder mechanism preferably comprising two sets of inclined or spirally arranged cutting blades 1212 and 13 13, mounted on a rotary shaft 1 1. The shaft 14 is mounted in a swinging frame 15, whereby the cutting blades 12 and 13 may be raised and lowered as desired. Said cutting blades 12 and 13 are driven by an electric motor 16, preferably through gear connections 17 and 18 driving a rotary shaft 1.) driving a power shaft 20 having a sprocket chain connection 21 with the cylinder shaft 14:.
A traveling sand throwing or discharging device preferably in the form of an endless belt is mounted in the rear of the cutting devices 12 and 13. This device preferably consists of an endless belt of leather or other suitable material, preferably provided with outstanding or projecting pins 23, the belt being adapted to pass over wheels 2l24 mounted in hangers 25, 26 underneath the body frame 1, so that the belt 22 will receive sand picked up, out and blended and then thrown rearwardly b the rotary cutting cylinder blades 12 and 13. Side shields or guides 32 are preferably arranged at the sides of the belt 22. The belt 22 is continuously driven by suitable power transmitting connection with the motor 16, as for example, a sprocket chain 2? connecting the rear rotary shaft 4% with the drivin shaft 20. The belt 22 receiving sand rom the cutting cylinders conveys the same rearwardly and discharges it from themachine in a steady continuous stream backwardly so that it will fall at the rear portion of and in behind the machine in a windrow most acceptable for use. The machine will of course be advanced into the pile of sand to be cut by its driving or propelling mechanism, and will be thence thrown continuously on to the belt device 22 and thence back to the rear of the machine.
Referring to Figs. 3 and a, there is shown a machine substantially like the machine of Figs. 1 and 2, except that the rotary cutting devices at the front end of the machine are rotated in an opposite dirction to the direction of rotation of Figs. 1 and 2. Thus the rotary sand cutting members 12"* and 13 rofate in an anti-clockwise direction, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of in a clockwise direction,
as shown in Fig. 1. Thus the sand cut will be thrown rearwardly and upwardly at the lower portion of the rotary cutting device and to take care of this the traveling belt conveyer 22 is mounted at the lower part of the machine so as to receive sand'froni the lower part of the cutting device, said belt conveyer 22* preferably being inclined slightly upwardly 'as shown in Fig. 3, so that sand may be discharged rearwardly from the rear end of the same. A chute 28 is arranged between the lower portion of the rotary cutting cylinder and the traveling belt conveyer 22, so as to insure the movement of the sand to the belt 22.
. The driving connection for the belt 22 is substantially the same as that described in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
.What I claim is:
1. A machine of the class specified, comprising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary sand cut ting, lifting and throwing device mounted thereon, and a traveling sand treating device arranged to receive material from the rotary sand cutting device and operative to project the same to a point at a distance from the machine.
2. A machine of the class specified, comprising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary sand cutting, lifting and throwing device mounted thereon, and a traveling sand treating belt device arranged to receive sand from the rotary cutting device and operative to project it to a point at a distance from th machine. A machine of the class specified, C0111- prising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary cutting, lifting and throwing device mounted at the front end thereof and a traveling sand treating belt device arranged to receive sand from the rotary cutting device and operative to project it rearwardly to a point at a distance from the machine.

A machine of the class specified, comprising a wheeled vehicle and rotary sand cutting, lifting and throwing cutting device mountedthereon, and a traveling sand treating belt device arranged in a generally horizontal position with one end adjacent the rotary cutting device and the other end in position to discharge material received from the cutting device and operative to project it to a point at a distance from the machine.
5. A machine of the class specified, comprising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary sand cutting, lifting and throwing device mounted at the "front end thereof, a traveling sand treating belt device mounted in the rear of the rotary cutting device and positioned to receive sand "from said. cutting device and project it to a distant point at the rear of the machine.
6. A machine of the class specified, comprising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary sand cutting, lifting and throwing device mounted at the front end thereof, a traveling sand treating belt device mounted in the roar of the rotary cutting device and positioned to receive sand from said cutting device, and operative to project it to a distant point at the rear of the machine, and power means for driving said vehicle and operating (levices.
7. A machine of the class specified comprising a wheeled vehicle, a rotary sand cutting, lifting and throwing device mounted at the front end thereof, a traveling sand treating belt device mounted in the rear of the rotary cutting device and positioned to receive sand from said cutting device and operative to project it to a distant point at the rear of the machine, and power means for driving said vehicle and operating de vices, said means comprising an electric motor for driving the vehicle and another electric motor for driving the cutting member and traveling belt.
