Description
E. ROHRICH HUSKING DEVICE Jug; 2o. 1925..
Filed May 20'. 1924 IIIIOJ |NVENTOR ATTORNEY WSS-YKM Patented dan. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD .ROI-ERICH, OF BELLWOOD, NEBRASKA.
I-IUSKING DEVICE.
Application filed May 20,
To cZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD ROHRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellwood, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Husking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a hand husking device.
My object is the provision, in a device of this character of means for effectively protecting the hand of the user from injury, and wherein a double pointed knife is employed and removably secured in a manner whereby either of the knives may be brought to operative position.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view to-illus trate the flap that conceals; the headed bolt that attaches the knife or husking hook to the improvement.
Figure G is a fragmentary front elevation to illustrate the pocket provided for one of the blades of the knife or husking hook.
Figure 7 is a sectional view approximately on the line 7 7 of Figure 6.
fin carrying out my invention I make use of a thin metal armor 1 of a size and shape to correspond with that of the palm of the user of the improvement. The metal armor 1 has its ends rounded, as at Q, to engage with the sides of the hand of the user. At one of its corners, the armor 1 is formed with a substantially round opening 3 for the passage of the thumb, o-f the user. Preferably the Strip 4 provided outwardly of the opening' 3 is formed with bendable extensions 5 designed to be bent over the leather inner facing G of the protector. At other points the facing 6 is riveted to the metal protector. The confronting ends of the leather strip 6 are spaced away from each other and have secured thereon the ends of straps 7 and 8, each carrying an eye 9. ln addition to the straps 7 and 8 there is another strap 10 1924. Serial No. 714,736.
that is designed to be passed through the eyes 9 and to be engaged by a buckle 11 carried by an additional and longer strap 12.v In this manner the device can be quickly but effectively clamped on the hand of the user. The metal armor on its outer face is formed with a V-shaped depression providing a. pocket 18. There is an opening 14 passing through the pocket adjacent to the inner widened shouldered end 15 thereof. The soft leather facing 6 is slitted both longitudinally and transversely to provide a flap 16 that surrounds the opening' 14.
There is passed through the opening 14 the shank of a headed bolt 17, the head being normally concealed by the iiap.
Tn carrying out my invention I make use of a double knife or husking hook that includes a central or body portion provided with opp-ositely extending elements 18 and 1S) connected together by a flange 20. On the elements 18 and 19 there are either formed or preferably removably secured the knives proper, indicated by the numeral 21. One of the knives or hooks is designed to be received and concealed inthe pocket 13, the elements 18 and 19 both being provided with openings to align with the opening 14 and to receive the bolt 17 therethrough. The offset portion 2O provides shoulders either of which is contactable by one face of a nut 22, the bolt 17 being screwed through the nut. To facilitate this, the head of the bolt 17 is kerfed, and by moving the flap to open position a suitable instrument may be inserted in the kerf.
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully disclose. the construction and advantages of my improvement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate.
By arranging the reversible knife, as above described, the improvement may be used with equal success in husking corn with thick or thin husks by bending the hand slightly backward and forward at the wrist. of the invention.
Having described claim z- 1. A hand husking device comprising a metal armor shaped tocorrespond with the shape of the palm of the user having an opening therethrough at one of its corners for the passage of the thumb of the user, a
the invention, I
This is one of the essential features soft lining in the armor and having its ends extending therefrom, adjustable means for connecting said armor, a pocket in the outer face of the armor, a, member having an offset central portion and knives extending in opposite directions therefrom, one of which designed to be received in the pocket, and means securing the said knife insaid pocket.
2. A device for the purpose set forth, comprising aI Athin metal armor shaped to correspond with the palm of a hand and having oneI of its ,upper corners provided with a round opening for the passage of the thumb of the hand therethrough, said member having its sides rounded inwardly, a soft fabric inner facing for themember, adjustable means for connecting` the ends of said vfacing for binding the armor on the hand ofthe user, said armor lia-ving a substantialy V-shaped pocket in its outer face, a member including an offset portion `having parts extending in .opposite directions therefrom and V-shaped knives on said parts, one of said knives designed to be received yin the pocket, the extensions of the said offset member having openings therethrough and the pocket also having an opening designed to align with either of said openings, a flap in the facing covering the last mentioned opening, a bolt ineinber designed topass through the last mentioned opening and through one of the Openings in the knife member, and a nut engageable with the said bolt for resting on the offset portion of the knife carrying member and for holding one blade thereof in the pocket.
3. A hand husking device including a metal armor having a soft lining and means for adjnstably securing the device on the hand of the user, said armor having a pocket in the outer face thereof, and a double knife having one blade normally lseated and retained in the pocket.
il. A hand husking device including a metal armor, and means for adjustably sustaining the saine on the hand of the user, said armor having a substantially V- shaped pocket on its outer face, knife menibers centrally offset from each othei` and each having a V-shaped body portion, one of which designed to be received in and secured in the pocket.
In testimony whereof I aix my signatuw E DVVA RD ROI-UNCH.
