Description

.Ly BALLARD. Vegetablg'Slcers. N0. 152,318, Patented June23, 1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JAMES BALLARD, OF ALMONT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-SLICERS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 152,318, dated June 23, 1874; application filed March 13, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs BALLARD, of Almont, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Vegetable-Gutters, of which the following is a specification The nature of this invention relates to certain improvements iu the construction of devices for slicing vegetables for drying and for other purposes; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement, with relation to each other, of the various parts, as
more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved slicer as attached to a common kitchen-table. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the knife-plate and its support on the line x :v in Fig. I. Fig. 3 is a similar view ou the line y y in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the weight.
Lilie letters refer to like part-s in each iigure.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a board, through which is mortised an aperture, forming the throat a of a double-edged knife, B, which is secured at its center to a V-sha-ped bar, b, the ends of which are dovetailed into the center of the ends of the aperture in the board. This bar is secured at any desired position by means of the set-screw d, thereby elevating or lowering the knife to slice thicker or thinner, as desired. To the rear side of this board there is secured the frame C, to the cross-tie e of which is pivoted the frame D. The ends of the side rails of this fra-me are adjustably secured to the bar d', in such a manner that the side rails may be setnearer together or farther apart, if necessary. The fr`ont of this fra-me is made by the slotted bar j'ftone end of which may be rigidly secured to one of the side rails, while the other side rail is adjustably secured to this bar by means of the slot therein and the set-screw g. E is a boX, secured between the side rails, and there may be various sizes to be used for larger or smaller vegetables, to be used as the side rails are contracted or expanded. This box is designed to receive the vegetables to be operated upon, and, with the vibration of the frame D, to carry them alternately against opposite edges of the knife. F is a weighted plunger, designed to fit into the box, and, by its weight, to press the vegetables in the box down to the knife.
In slicing very large vegetables, like cabbages or pumpkins, this box may be omitted, and the vegetable be placed on the knifeboard between the side rails of frame I), which are made adjustable, as hereinbefore described, to the size of the vegetable, to hold it in place and prevent its rollin 0.
G are rigid lugs, secured to the under side of the device, and are designed, by means of the wedges h, to secure it to a common table, as shown.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a vegetable-sheer, the combination of the pivoted vibrating arms or levers D, removable box E, and slotted bar d', so that large vegetables can be clamped between the arms, substantiall y as set forth.
J AMES BALLARD.
