PAT
UNlT-ED STATES ALBERT NEAL, or KOKOMO, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
Application fired March 15, 1924. Serial No. 699,582.
mo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
'My said invention relates to a wrench and it is an object of the same to provide a wrench of the type which grips anobject more tightly the greater the resistance encountered, and which wrench shall be strong Cit and durable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of thischaracter which may be manufactured in an economical manner, it being made of a relatively limited number of parts.
Referring tothe accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts-- Figure 1 is a side'view in elevation,
Figure 2 a similar view of the opposite side,
Figure 3 a bottom plan, and
Figure 4: a perspective of the device.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the handle of the wrench which in this instance consists of a single piece stamped or cut out from sheet metal and folded over at 11. The part of the handle at 11 is preferably left in somewhat expanded condition to prevent the handle from slipping out of the hand of the user. The free ends 12 are somewhat wider than the body of the handle and one of said ends has a curved slot'13 and a shorter straight slot 14, the other end having a curved slot 15 and a circular opening 16.
The opening 16 is adapted to receive a trunnion on the shank of the jaw 17 which also has a trunnion 18 spaced longitudinal- 1y of the wrench and entering the slot 15. Another jaw 19 has a pair of longitudinally spaced trunnions 20 and 21 entering slots 13 and 14.
The shanks of the jaws 17 and 19 are located on the under side of said jaws and are fiat as clearly shown in Figure 4 and may be formed by die casting or in any other convenient manner. Each of the shanks has a flange 22 extending forwardly of the jaw for reenforcing its connection with the respective jaw and each of the shanks also has a flange 23 extending over the rear end of the other shank, said flange providing with the aw on the shank, a trough in which the shank of the other jaw is slidably located. As will be evident from consideration of Figures 1 and 2 the flanges 23 are spaced from one-another to permit the necessary relative movement between the jaws. V
The free ends 12 of the handle are bent so as to afford space between them for the flanges of the jaws and between said ends" and the bentpart 11 the side members of the handle are electrically welded together for greater strength at 24:.
In the operation of my device the aws. in wide open position as in Figures 1 and are positioned at opposite sides of a nut or other object to be turned and the handle is moved down atits outer end relative to the remainder of the device.
Thereupon the handle rotates relatively to the trunnion in the opening 16 of aw 17 while the trunnion 18 moves through its arcuate slot 16. Since the shank of the jaw 19 slides on the shank of the jaw 17, thelatter being in a sense the stationary body of the wrench, there must be a loose connection between the trunnion 21 and the adjacent handle port-ion as shown at 14 and the slot 13 also cannot be strictly arcuate with reference to the trunnion 21 but approaches nearer thereto at each end than at the middle thereby allowing full freedom of movement between the parts without needless binding.
It will be evident to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the sho ifinat-iOl'l but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrench comprising a pair of jaws, a shank at the under side of each aw extending forwardly of the jaw, a flange at the end of each shank opposite the jaw extending over the adjacent shank and forming with the under side of the jaw a guiding groove for the other shank, trunnions projecting laterally from the shanks said trunnions being spaced from each other transversely of the shaft and longitudinally of the wrench, and a bifurcated handle embracing the shanks each fork of the handle being pivotally connected to one of. said trunnions, substantially as setsforth.
2. A wrench comprising a pair of jaws, a shank at the under side of each jaw extending forwardly of the jaw, a flange at the end of each shank opposite the jaw extends; ing over the adjacent shank and form ng with the under side of thejaw ;aguid ng groove for the other shank, oppositely projectingtrunnions on the shanks .said:.trun-- :nions being spaced from :each other :trans- -.ve1"sely of the shaftand longitudinally 'of the wrench, a bifurcated handle embracing the=sl1anks-each fork of the handlekbeing pivotally connectedto: one of said trun- .111011S821Cl1f01k also having an'arcuate slot,
and laterally projecting trunnionsso'n the jaws-extending into said arcuate slots for ilimiting the: relative movement of the 1] aws,
substantially as set forth.
3. Awrenohcomprising a pair of jaws, a shank extending forwardly fromthe underside of each jaw,.andioverlappingthe other jaw,-a--fl;ange atthe end of the shank oppo- ,sit'erthe jaw extending laterally over the adjacent shank 1 and forming with :the under side; of :thejaw a-guiding groove for the :otherwshank, a pair of trunnionswspaced transversely of the-shaft and longitudinally Of-the. wrench on -eachiof said shanks, a
bifurcatedhandle embracing 'the shanks one fork of the handle being loosely pivoted I .to
for limitingthe relative movement of the jaws, substantially as set forth. I
4:. A wrenchcomprising a pair ofopposed jaws havin shanks extending forwardly from their under sides, in face contact with xeachnother, each, of said jaws havinga for- --wardly extending portion forming a-"laterally extending flange onv each shank and bearing against the underside of-the wopposed jaw to guide the same, each of said shanks halvinga flange at its end .opprosite' the jaw Lextendinglaterally 'over the adjacent z-shank andsforming with the under side of-the j aw aguiding groove for thefother jaw, and a bifurcated handle pivotally connected to each of:said jawsrfor moving them relatively to i each-other, substantially as setfort-h;
In;witnesswvhereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at'Kokomo, Indiana, this 13th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-four." 1 t ALBERT NEAL. [n s] Wit-nesses v M. L. SHULER, (F B. MESEKE.
