HAND-THRO/VN BOMB.
Application led September To all iti/icmz' may cof/tecra.'
Be it known that l, ARTURO CIANO, marine oilicer, late of the Royal Italian Navy, a subject of the lifing of lltaly, residing at Rome. in the Kingdom of l'taly, have invented certain ne w and useful Improvements in Hand-'lllirown Bombs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to and comprises improvements in hand thrown bombs, the object of said improvements being to render the bomb absolutely safe while being handled or transported and at the same time to ensure that it wil`l explode even when striking against soft materials.
HQ bomb.
Figure 2 is a front view of the upper portion of the bomb.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of Figure 1.
Figure l is a view of the complete bomb, the View being orthogonal relatively to Figure 2.
Figure 5 shows a detail.
As it is shown in the drawings the bomb is made of a shell 1, preferably water-tight, of metal plate or other suitable mate-rial, provided on its upper end with a filling hole 26 and with another hole closed with a plug 2.
Inside the shell the cavity 3 is designed to receive the percussion device, and the cavity 4l is designed to receive the locking device as well as the third safety device forming a portion of the locking device itself. The percussion device comprises a striker with a stem 5 and a guiding' head 6, a liring pin 7. a cooking spring 8 and a percussioncap 10. In the embodiment shown the stem 5 is connected with the guiding head 6 by means of the pine 33 the pin 7 is fastened to the head of the striker and the percussion- 5, 1.923. Serial No. 660,979.
The locking device is formed of a trip lever, pivoted at 12, which. by spring is kept with its end 13 pressed against the sloping face 14 of the head 5 of the striker and with the other arm 15, whose extremity is shaped like a cheek with a spherical recess 1T, bears upon the ball 16. The lever is keptlocked in its normal position owing to the saine bearing upon the ball which pre vents the right arm from turning upwards, and through the thrust of spring 25 which prevents the leftarm from turning up, keeping it pressed against the end of the. striker.
The ball 16 is held in place by the spherical recess 1T, by a cheek 18 provided on the upper head 19 of the bomb, and by the spherical recess of Ithe cheek 21 lixed upon a shoulder 22 which is integral with the safety metal plate 20; the latter forming a second safety device arranged between the lower edge 2a of head 6 and the cap-holder 10.'
The upper portion of the stem 5 ofthe striker is provided with a slot 23 within which is lodged a tooth 28 of a plate 27 (Figure. The plate 27, which constitutes the first safety device, is connectedI to a Cotter 29 by means of the ring 32 said Cotter in turn being connected with a heavy plate 30 which is held in place by a ribbon 31 wound upon the bomb. lVhen the striker' is uncocked the tooth 28 is held within the slot .3 by means of the plug 2, but upon cooking the striker said tooth 28 may be freely withdrawn from the slot 23.
The shoulder 22 is connected by means of a ribbon 31 which is wound upon the lateral surface of the bomb head with the heavy plate aforesaid, the latter being by means of the cotter 29, connected as stated, to the safety metal plate 27 forming the first safety device. A
The shoulder 22 is connected also to the surface of the bomb by means of a flexible tie, a ribbon or string, not shown in the drawing.
The above described system works in the following manner.
Before throwing the bomb the end of the stem 5 of the striker is partially pulled out from its lodging, until the end 13 of the releasing lever sliding along the side of the head 6 is ycaused to automatically bear against and below the edge 24 of Said lll) head; in this Way the striker remains cocked PAfter the striker has been cocked, the plate 27 is drawn out, which forms the first safety device, by pulling out the tooth 28 from slot 23 and in this Way is Withdrawn also the cotter 29 which retains the plate 30.
Upon throwing the bomb, the plate 30, which is no lonO'er retained by the Cotter, acting on account of its own Weight unWinds the ribbon 31 Wound upon the bomb, Whereupon drops doivn together with the plate 30, the ribbon 31, the shoulder 22, the stop cheek Q1 fixed to the shoulder 22 and the safety plate 2O forming the second safety "device) Which is integral with the shoulder.
After the removal of the shoulder 22, and the parts connected therewith the ball 16 is kept in its place only by the cheeks 17 and 18 and through the action of the radial pressure exerted by the cheek 17 at the end of lever 4L.
It is to be noticed that the vertical diameter of the ball 6 passes somewhat inward the right hand edge of the bearing surface of the cheek 17 besides the length of the arms of the lever 4 is such that the radial pressure on the bearing points of the ball is much less than the tension of spring 3 of the striker.
When in the above conditions of equilibrium of the ball the projectile strikes, no matter how slightly against anything, the ball, by effect of inertia, shifts laterally. The end 17 of the lever lmay then freely turn upward and the striker by being released may strike against the percussioncap.
It should be noted that the system constituted by the parts 30, 31, 21, 2O unwinds upon throwing the bomb but remains connected to the bomb and acts as a flexible rudder Whilst the bomb travels along the descending' branch of the trajectory. The length land Weight of the steering device are such as to keep the bomb steered and to cause it to strike the ground in the best position for the operation of the ball.
I claim as my invention:
In ahan'd-throivn bomb equipped with successively acting safety devicescontained in the head of the bomb, the combination With the locking lever, of a ball being engaged by a spherical recess formed on the arm of said locking lever and constituting the last safety device, a cheek provided in the head of the bomb in engagement With the said ball, and a shoulder in the head of the bomb formed also with a cheek bearing againstthe said ball, the said shoulder being' a portion of the previously acting safety device automatically eliminated during the travel of the bomb.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two subscribing` Witnesses, this 20th day of August, 1923.
ARTURO CIANO.
