To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES BATY, J unior, and FRANK E. GRAY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys.

The object of the invention is to provide a toy representing a hen or other fowl, provided with means, which when the toy is operated will represent the hen as laying an egg.

A further object of the invention is to provide a toy wherein specific mechanism is provided, whereby when the toy is operated,

the chicken will be made to cackle and but one egg from the hopper can fall.

The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The numeral 1 indicates a frame or body made in the instance illustrated in the form of a hen, but it is to be understood that other forms or representations of fowl or birds may be used.

2 designates a standard which extends vertically up through the frame 1, and is formed at its lower end with legs 3, fixed to a suitable base. The standard operates in guides 4: and is provided with a series of openings5, with which the teeth 6 of a mutilated gear 7 engage. The mutilated gear 7 is mounted on a shaft supported in the frame 1, and is provided on its periphery with a series of serrations 8. The serrations cooperate with the edge of a spring tongue 1), secured in the frame 1, so that in the operation of the toy the serrations and tongue will make a noise to represent the hen as cackling.

In rear of and within the frame is an inclined hopper 11, in which are stored toy eggs 12. Near the bottom of the hopper and extending across the frame is a shaft 13, and mounted thereon is an escapement 1 1, including a lower leg or valve 15, an upper leg or valve 16, and a stem 17. The stem extends upwardly and through a slot 17 in the standard 2, and is operated as the frame is raised and lowered, as will presently appear. I

The wings 18 of the hen are hinged to the frame at 19, and extending inwardly from the wings are lugs 20, which are located in the path of movement of the stem 17.

The representation of the tail of the hen is hinged at 21 and a spring is provided to hold it in proper position.

In operation, toy eggs are inserted through the opening in the upper rear portion of the frame and into the hopper, the frame or body of the toy being in its lowermost position as shown in Fig. 1. When in this position the egg at the bottom of the hopper is held by the lower leg or valve 15, and the stem 17 is elevated and out of contact with the lugs 20. If it be desired to operate the toy, the frame or body 1 is bodily elevated on the standard 2 and in performing this movement, the mutilated gear 7 is partially rotated and the serrations engage the end of the tongue 9, and creates a sound to imitate the cackling of a hen. In the upward movement of the frame or body 1, the stem 17 is, through engagement with walls of the slot in the upper end of the standard, caused to rock on the shaft 13, which projects the lower'leg or valve 16 of the escapement within the hopper and withdraws the upper leg or valve 15 from the hopper. This action allows the eggs to roll down the hopper and rest on the lower leg 16, hence supporting all the eggs for the time being. In addition to this operation. the terminal of the stem 17 engages the lugs 20 and rocks the wings so that the hen is made to appear as raising or flapping her wings.

The frame 1 having been elevated, it is released and as it falls by gravity on the standard 2, the escapement is rocked on its shaft and the upper leg or valve is projected in between the two lowermost eggs in the hopper, while the lower leg or valve cackling noise is again made.

The invention is extremely simple in construction and because of the arrangement of parts, it can be cheaply made. In opera tion, it simulates a hen "laying an egg and atfords amusement for the childs mind;

l/Vhat I claim is:

1. A toy of the class described, comprising a body, wings hinged on the body, a standard on which the body is reciprocally mounted, a hopper in the body to hold artificial eggs," means operated by raising and lowering the body to release one egg at a time from the hopper, and means operated by raising and lowering the body to flap the wings at the time the egg is in movement from and within the hopper. v

2. A toy of the class described, comprising a body, a standard on which the body is reciprocally mounted, a mutilated gear mounted in the body, the teeth on the gear meshing with teeth formed on the standard when the body is raised or lowered, said gear having serrations, a tongue with which the serrations engage to produce sound when the body is raised or lowered, and means for dropping an artificial egg from the body when the latter is lowered.

3. In a toy of the class described, the combination of a body, astandard on which the body is reeiprocated, the standard having a slot, an escapement mounted in the body and provided with two legs or valves and a stem, the stem extending through the slot in the standard, and a hopper to receive artificial eggs, the two legs or valves operating in the hopper to drop but one egg at a time when the body is reciprocated.
