BILLIARD-CUE CHALKER.
Application filed December 13, 192.2.' Serial No. 606,1731.
To all whom it may cor/cera Be it known that I, JosnPH GUAr, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in thecounty olfMissoula and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-V a Billiard-Cue tion is to provide a device, of this nature..
which may Ibe conveniently located and which will be automatic in operation as well as adjustable so as t0 be operable under varying circumstances.
A still further important object ofthe invention is to provide a device of thisnature which will lbe simple and efficient in construction, reliable in operation, attraetive in appearance7 accessible, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and
generally well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and thev combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully ydescribed and claimed.
In the drawingsl Figure 1 is an elevationv of' the device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough, and
Figure 3 is a detail section taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawing in 'detail it will be seen that the bracket which is constructed especially for this device consists of a plate 1 which may be fastened to a support in any suitable manner such as by screws 2. A casing or housing is formed on this plate 1 and includes the fixed portion 3 comprising a pair of right angularly disposed walls having a flange 4 lixed to the plate 1 and the movable portion 5 also consists of two right angularly 'disposed walls one of which is hingedly connected to .purposel as will appear. later.
one of the walls of ,the other portion '3 as at 6 whereby the housing may be opened for access to theinterior thereofforfa clip holdsV the movable portion 5 in Vclosed relation tothe xed portion. An apertured ear 8 1s disposed on the plate 1 inn teriorly of the housing and has disposed on one face an annular series of ratchet teeth.
The chalker proper consists vof an inner member 9 and an outer member 10 ytelescopically associated therewith. VThe'inner member 9 is in the form of a cylindrical block having -a spiral groove 11 arranged on itsvcurved periphery. j This inner inember 9 is fixed to a shank or stem or bracket arm 12 which terminates .at one end in a disk 13 having on its face a pluralityof annularly arranged ratchet teeth fforlassociation with the ratchetteeth on the ear 8. `A bolt 14 extends-from the diskf13 through the apertured-ear 8 so thatthe ratchet teethr may be locked in engagement with each other by a thumb nut 15 or in any other suitable manner. Thus it will be seen that the chalker may be 'disposed yin various angular relations lto they plate 1 it being noted that one wall of the fixed portion 3 of the housing lis provided with a slot through which the shank 12 extends.
The outer member 10 .is in the form of a cylindrical tube having an apertured closurey trap v16 screwed or otherwise fixed to one end and av cup shaped member 17 VVattached to thefother-end., This cup shaped member 17 supportsl a cone shaped guide v18. A chalk receptacle 19 is disposed inthe adjacent end of the inner member- 10 and a block of chalk 20 is disposed therein. It
will be noted that a cue stick may be inserted through the cup shaped member 17 and the guide 18 will direct thetip in engagement with the chalk 2O disposed in the A spring. l
receptacle 19. A pair of lugs 21 are disposed on the outer member 10 so as to project inwardly thereof and engage the spiral groove 11 of the inner member 9.. These lugs may be of any preferred construction and in the present instance are merelyillustrated as rivets the heads thereof being positioned in the spiral groove 11. It will thus be seen that as the outer member is moved in relation to the inner member it will rotate. Therefore, as the billiard cuel is inserted so that the tip engages the chalk Vlo ffactory and reliable restults', and itis to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars Withbut departing from the spirit or scope oi the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. f
Having thus 'described my invention what I :claim as new is l. In combination, an adjustable bracket including a stem, a pair of telescopically associated members, vone or" Which is provided with a spiral groove and the other with a "lug engageable with the groove, the inner member being attached to saidv stem, a spring coiled about the stem and having one enr "engaged with the stem and the other end engaged with the other member, and a chalk holder disposed in one end ot the outer :member so that when 'a cue stick is pressed against chalk held in the chalk holder rthe outer member Will be tele-scoped over the inner Vmember'and rotated thereby unwinding vthe spring and at the saine time expanding thesame and thus When the cue stick is disengaged from the chalk in the chalk holder said spring will return the outer member to its initial position.
2. In combination, a bracket including aV stem, a pairz ot' telescopically associated members, one of Which 1s provided With a spiral groove and the other With a Vlug en- 'gageable with thespiral groove, 4the inner Lr'nembe'r 'being attached to said stem, a spring coiled about the stem and having `one end engaged With the stem and the other end engaged With the outer member, a chalk holder disposed in one endo' the outer member, a cup-shaped member disposed on the outer member, and a conical shaped guide in tie cup-shaped member leading to the cha k holder, whereby when a cue stick is held against chalk held in the chalk holder the outer member will be telescoped and rotated over the inner member thereby nnvvfinding the coil spring and stretching the same so that when the cue stick is released from the chalk in the Velia k holder said outer member will be retnrned to its initial position.
'3. Vllin conibination with a chalker for cues, a bracket including a plate, a lhousing divided into tvvo sections each including a pair of angularly disposed side Walls and a triangular Vshaped end'ivall, one side Wall of one 'section being provided With a slot, a stem extended through the slot, said chalker attached to the exterior' end of said stein, the 'interior end thereof terminating in a disk having an annular series of ratchet teeth, an apertured ear extending from the plate within the housing 'and having anannular Vseries of ratchet teeth on one face thereoha bolt extending'irom the 'stem and centrally from the disk thereon through the apertured ear, and a nut on said bolt to hold the ear and disk in engagementwith each other so that the teeth prevent rotation ot the disk in relation to the ear, one section of said housing being liked to said plate and the other section-being hinged to the lined section all in the manner and for the purpose specified. f
in testimony whereof 'l aliix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
