Description

Dec. 30. 1924.
G. W. BOYD POLE OR TOWER Filed July' 23, 1923 Geo/ye VIZ Eoyai Patented 3Q, 1924-,
GEORGE NASHINGTON BOYD,
OE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
PQLE OB TOVTEE.
Application filed July 23,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Born, a resident of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, a citizen. of the United States, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Poles or Towers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in poles or towers, which are particularly adapted for use as telegraph poles or towers, but which may he used for any purpose where such a structure would serve in an eflicient and practical manner.
One object of my invention is the production of a tower or pole of metal sections or pipes adapted to be assembled to provide a pole or tower, thus insuring a structure which will be strong and durable while of light weight and which is capable of easy assembling and taking apart, which will occupy a small amount of space toallow for ready and inexpensive transportation.
Another objectof my invention is the provision of a sectional metal pole or tower which can be quickly assembled and produce an ornamental appearance to make its use highly desirable as a pole for supporting telegraph or telephone wires where used in roads or streets, and whose construction will allow the lineman to easily ascend or descend in fixing the wires and supports.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a pole or tower of pipe sections which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, which can be quickly assembled or taken down, which can be stored and shipped in a small space, and which all things considered will prove useful, desirable and practical.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a sectional metal tower or pole embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as described and claimed, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation. of a. complete metal sectional pole or tower con-- structed in accordance with and embodying my invention.
Figure 2 represents a view taken on line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 represents a detail view of a part of the pole and means for supporting the wire carrying cross-arms, v
My pole or tower is made of sections of 1923. Serial N0. 653,211.
pipe or tube of the desired size and length and has its upright or vertical portion composed of the series of sections A, arranged to form four corner uprights B, which are connected at proper lengths by the threeway couplings C, with which are connected the outer ends of the inclined sections forming braces D, the inner ends of which are connected to the four-way couplings E, which have the vertical nipples E, which receive the central vertical sections F, as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, and from which it will be noted that the pole 01' tower consists of the four corner uprights which are connected by the series of horizontal bracing sections D and the inclined braces D, and thus with the central vertical sections F, making a complete metal sectional tower or pole, and between the horizontal connecting members are arranged the horizontal sections G, which are connected with the corner uprights by'the three-way couplings H, and form a complete ladder on one side of the tower in connection with the horizontal sections of each of the connecting members, as shown in Figure 1.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the pole or tower is made entirely of pipe or like sections coupled to form an upright structure connected. and braced by a series of horizontal members and the base of the structure may be anchored in theground in any manner or in the cement foundation J, and to provide means for securing the wire carrying cross-arms K, the threaded arms L, are secured at M, in the upper sections of the post by fastenings N, and the brackets N, are formed on said arms to support the said cross-arms and secure them rigidly by means 0, as shown clearly in Figure 3.
The construction of my tower or pole is so obviously apparent from the drawing and description that comment thereon is unnecessary, but it will be evident that my tower or pole is highly desirable and useful as a telegraph, telephone, or trolley support; is ornamental and attractive in appearance can be quickly and cheaply packed and shipped at small expense; can be quickly and cheaply set up for use; and can be produced at a price to make it a desirable substitute for the poles in common use.
I claim:
A tower or pole, consisting of a base or foundation, a central vertical member supported in said base and composed of pipe sections having their ends threaded, corner vertical members anchored in said base and each composed of pipe sections having their ends threaded, six Way threaded couplings connecting the sections of the central memher, a series of horizontal pipe sections having their ends threaded and connected to said six Way couplings, and a series of five Way threaded couplings connecting the horizontal and vertical pipe section to form a 10 complete sectional tower. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
I GEORGENASHINGTON BOYD.
