Description
t l l i t UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLARD M. FULLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAST-IRON BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,100, dated June 1G, 1874; application filed May 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLARD M. FULLER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Imprmf'ements in Cast-Iron Boilers 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification My invention relates particularly to the class of boilers which are used in apparatus for heating` railroad-cars, but may also be applied to boilers for an y purpose; and the nature of my invention consists in the construction of a boiler of cast-iron in one piece, as will bc hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a plan view of a car-heating apparatus, to which my improved boiler is applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, through the line x a?, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the line y y, Fig. l.
A`represents the lire-box of a car-heating apparatus, with grate B and ash-pit C underneath the same. l) is the shell, underneath the boiler, forming the tluc from the fire-box to the smoke-exit tlue E. H H are the doors to the lire-box and ash-pit, and I is the magazine. G represents the boiler, the upper .part of which is made semi-cylindrical in shape, or in any other suitable form, and the bottom is formed with a series of deep longitudinal cor rugations, ct a, which render the boiler much stronger, and also materially increase the amount of heating-surface. Inside of the boiler are transverse crosshars b I), which ruu on top of the corrugations from side to side of the boiler, for the purpose of strengthening the same. The entire boiler, with these crossbars, is cast in one single piece, the core being readily taken out through a top tube, J, and side tube K, also cast with the boiler, these tubes being, respectively, for the exit of the steam and the ingress of the water. Along each side of the boiler G is further cast an L-shaped flange, d, which is intended to tit over the edges ofthe shell or base D of the heater, and form a tight joint with the same.
A boiler of this construction can be malinfactored comparativelycheap, and is strong and durable; and it may be used not only with the heating apparatus herein described, but with any apparatus, and for any purpose, where only a limited amount of steam pressure is intended to be maintained.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A steam-boiler, G, cast in one piece, with the longitudinal corrugations a a., and interior transverse bars b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. A steam-boiler, Gr, cast in one piece, with the longitudinal corrugations a a, interior transverse bars b I), tubes J K, and longitudinal L-shaped side angcs d d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix myv signature in presence of two witnesses.
NVILLARD M. FULLER.
Witnesses JOHN B. FREDERICK, CYRUs PYLE.
