UNITED STATES P ATEN l? '0 FF "1 CE.
NO'NSLIP CLOTHESLINE GRIP.
Application filed August 27, 1924. Serial No. 734,539.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon R. HAYNEs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Waynesboro, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nonslip Clothesline Grips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient attachment which can be aiiixed to a post, side of a building, or other suitable support and which will hold the end or intermediate portion of a clothes line or similar cord firmly in adjustable position.
A further object of the invention, is to provide such an attachment which may be manufactured at a low cost and can be employed in a. large number of locations.
Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detail description and the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View of the grip attached to a support and in closed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the parts in open position.
Figure 3 is a view from the back with the parts in open position.
Figure 4: is an edge View of the device with the parts in closed position.
The invention comprises two flat plates 1 and 2 preferably formed of sheet metal one of which has turned over ears 3 and the other of which has a turned over ear 2. Through these ears passes a pin 5 by which the two parts are hinged together. The upper edge of the part 1 is provided with semi-cylindrical portion 6 and the upper edge of the part 2 is provided with a similar semi-cylindrical portion 7 which faces the portion 6 when the two parts are closed, thus forming a tube.
Bent over at substantially right angles from the edge of the member 1 opposite to the hinge is an ear 8 provided with a notch which has an inclined edge 9 and a straight edge 10. Pivoted as by a rivet or similar means 11 to the side of the member 2 is a latch member 12 the end of which is attached to engage in the notch in the member 8 when the parts are in closed position. This latch will engage with the inclined face 9 of the notch and as it is pressed downwardly this face will draw the two members 1 and 2 toward each other thus clamping the rope which may be held between the semi-cylindrical parts 6 and 7.
The ears 3, the semi-cylindrical portion 6, and the ear 8 are all formed integral with the plate 1 while the ear 4 and the semicylindrical portion 7 are formed integral with the plate 2. The attachment therefore comprises only four elements excluding the rivet 11 and the screws 13. These plates can be readily stamped out of sheet metal and the latch 12 may be formed out of the same material. This enables the device to be produced at a low cost.
It is obvious that the device may be attached to a post as shown in the drawings or to the side of a building or any other suitable support. The tube formed by the closing of the two semi-cylindrical members should preferably be slightly smaller than the size of the rope which is intended to be held therein. The inner surfaces of the members 6 and 7 may be roughened as at 16 if desired to enable them to grip the rope more effectively.
It will be seen that the invention provides a very simple and eflicient device for obtaining a desired result. Minor details may be varied without in any manner departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A rope grip comprising two sheet metal members hinged together at one edge one of said members being adapted to be attached to a support, each member having integral therewith 2L semi-cylindrical portion at one edge thereof, which portions form a, tube when the members are in engagement, an integral offset ear on one member having a cam notch therein, and a, latch pivoted to the other member and adapted to engage said notch to draw the members into engagement and hold them in said position. 10
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
GEORGE R. HAYNES.
