Be it mowil that ll, An'rHUn (O. KLECK- Nim, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Portable Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.,
This invention relates to portable lamps of the type commonly employed about automobiles, and particularly tc the type of I portable lamp in which a magnet is provided by means of which the lamp is caused to adhere to any iron or steel portion of the machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a portable lamp of this Character which shall be compact, in which the parts will not be subject to derangement, and in which the minimum number of parts shall be emplo ed. w ne of the features of the invention is f the manner of forming the lamp socket of portions inturned from the flange of the magnet housing.
Another feature of the invention is the improved manner of joining together the leading in conductors, the termnals of the magnet winding, and the lamp socket terminals.
Other features and advantages will appear as the description of the invention progresses.

eferring now to the drawings, 10 represents the magnet housing which is generally cylindrical in cross section. Centrally positioned within the housing is the magnetcore 11 provided with the pole piece 12. Secured to the core 11 at the end remote from the pole piece 12 is a washer 13 of magnetizable' material, the end of the core being secured to the washer by having its end inserted through an opening in the washer and the edges thereof upset or'peened over, as indicated at 14.
Positioned above and below, respectively, of the washer 13 are the insulating strips 15 and 16. Adjacent to its opposite edges, the washer 13 is cut away, and for the cut-away portions similar portions ofinsulating material are provided as indicated at 17 and 18. At 19 and 20 are indicated the terminal contacts of the lamp socket. These contacts 19 and 20 are carried at the ends of curved metallic strips 21 and 22, respectively of flexble material, the ends of the strips 21 and 22 remote from the contacts being secured to the insulating strips 15 and 16 by means of the hollow rivets 23, each of which passes through the strips 16, 15, and one of the strips 21 or 22. Two rivets are provided for attaching each of the strips 21 or 22 to the supporting strips 15 and 16. 'The hollow rivets rovide openings through which the termina of the magnet coil 211 may be carried upwardly and into engagement with the strips 21 and 22 respectively.
The leading in conductors 25 and 26 have their terminale also brought into enga ement with the strips 21 and 22, respective y, at a point adj acent to the coil terminal and the terminals of both' the leading in conductors, and the coil may be secured to the strip 21 01'22, as the case may be, by a drop 85 of solder. The housing 10 is shouldered as indicate'd at 27 to provide a stop, limiting the upward movcment of the magnet assembly into the\ housin After the magnet assembly has eo been p aced in the housing, a splitv washer 28 is inserted in the groove 29 in the housin and by its engagement with the insu ating washer 30 adj acent to the pole piece 12 maintains the magnet assembly within the housing.
The housing at its upper edge has an in- 'turned flange 31. llntegral with the flanlge 31 at opposite sides thereof are the downwardly extending ears 32, each of which is. provided with abayonet slot 33. These ears 32 are slightly curved and together forma' socket for the reception of the lamp base 34, as indicated in Figura 2. The bayonet 'slots 33 are arranged to receive the lugs 35 projecting from the 'opposite sides of the base' 34 and maintain the lamp in position. When the lamp is in position with the lugs 35 within the 4offset portions of the slots 33, the terminals 36 of the lamp will be in en agement with the terminals 19 and o lam socket, respectively. It should be here noted that the particular type of socket herein disclosed is provided for the double contact type of lamp. However, with obvious modifications, it can be arranged to pe employed with a single contacttype of Aplamp shield 37 is provided, the open end of which fits snugly about the shouldered portion of the base member 10. The Shield 37 on one side thereof and opposite the bulb I of the lamp is cut away to provide an opening 38 throu'gh whichthe rays from the light may shine.
Projecting inwardly from the side wall of the housing 10 is a lug 39, and the members 13;, 15 and 16 are provided with alined notches to receive this lug 39 in order to definitely determine the rotary position of the magnet 'assembly within the housing. This assures that the contacts 19 and 20 will always be in a position to be engaged by the lamp terminal contacts 36 when the lamp is inserted in the socket.
VVhile in the above description and in the drawings but a single embodiment of the invention is 'disc1osed, it is to be understood that applicant contemplates modifications of certain of the details and the invention is,

In a portable lamp, a substantially cylindrical housing, lamp socket contacts Within said housing, an inwardly extending flange at one end of said housing, portions mte'gral with said flange at opposite sides thereof x'e-bent to lie substantially parallel with the walls of said housing and fashioned to form a lamp socket, a magnet coil within said housing, a core for said coil, a disc of magnetizable material at one end of said core and at substantially right angles thereto, strips of insulating material, one at each side said strips for securing said strips, terminals for said coil extending through said hollow rivets, a projection in' said housing, notches in said magnetizable disc, said projection bein'g adapted to engage with said notches in the magnetizable disc and insulating strips to determine the rotary position of the magnet assembly within the housing, a split E.
