Be it known that ll iiimmr A. Busznn, a citizen of the United Fltates of America. residing at Bclleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois. has invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Ranges. of which the following is a specification.
'Elhe object of my invention is to make a gas range and broiler, said range having a damper secured therein and having means for detecti nasally when the operator has placed the range in operation but failed to maintain the damper in an open position. the operation of a range. it is desirous that the products of combustion circulate through the range and pass out from the range into the fine. it is necessary to have a amper in this path of circulation. This damper should be open to various degrees depending upon the heat desired in the range. it should never be absolutely closed when the range is in operation. My range provides means by which the operator will discover when the range is in operation that the damper has been inadvertently kept in a closed position by conducting the fumes from the range into the room in which the range is operating and thereby notifying the operator that the damper should be opened. The odor of the fumes is sufiicient to give this alarm. I furthermore desire to attach a broiler to the range so that the products of combustion may be passed through the circulatory system of the broiler thereby heating it.
With these and other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my device.

The range 3 consists of the base 41-, the front wall 5. the rear wall 6 and the side walls 7 and 8. The range is mounted on the legs 9 in the conventional manner. Numerals 10 designate the gas burners of conventional construction and numeral 11 the oven having the floor 12 and the sides 13. Numeral 1 1 designates the flue which is in fluid communication with the opening 15 in the oven. Numeral 16 designates the top of the range and numeral 17 the top of the erial No. 689,618.
oven. The top of the range and the top'of the oven are secured in spaced relationship as best shown in Fig. 1 to the side walls? and 8 and to the front wall 5. The top of the range is also secured to the rear wall 6. Numeral 18 designates the back of the oven and extends from the top of the oven 17 to the base a to which it is secured. It is also secured to the side walls 7 and 8. Numerals 19 designate perforations in the back of the oven 18 above the top of the oven 17. The circulation of the productsof combustion is indicated by arrows. The circulation for which has been provided thus far is as follows: The cold air enters through perforations in the base 4 not shown passes laterally by the burners 10 where it is heated and then passes upwardly between the sides 13 of the oven 11 and the side walls 7 and 8 of the range over the top of the sides 13 into the oven, through the opening 15, into the flue 1 1 upwardly into the space above the top of the oven 17 and below the top of the range 16 through the perforations 19. The products of combustion are now in the space between the top of the range 16 and the top of the oven 17 in front of the back of the oven 18. Tumeral 20 designates a baffle plate secured to the top of the oven 17 and to the top of the range 16 longitudinally and having its one end secured to the back of the oven 18. This baffle plate 20 is positioned at the angle indicated in Fig. 2. Numeral 21 designates the smoke stack secured to the rear wall 6 of the range. The sides of the smoke stack 21 are continued from the rear wall 6 to the back of the oven 18 as best shown in Fig. 2. They are secured at their top to the top of the range 16 and at their bottom to the top of the oven 17. An opening 22 is formed in the back of the oven 18 between the Wall continuations of the smoke stack 21 just indicated. It will be seen that by these means fluid communication is established betweenv the smoke stack 21 and the space be tween the top of the oven 17 and the top of the range 16 to the right of the baffle plate 20 in Fig. 2. The products of combustion may now after passing through the perforations 19 in the back of the oven 18 pass around the baffle plate 20 as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2 and then into the opening 22 and thence into the smoke stack 21. Numeral 23 designates a hinged damper hingedly secured to the back of the oven 18 (ill by the hinges '24 and 25; Numeral 26 designates an eye secured to the damper and numeral 27 a damper rod having a hook at its one end, which hook passes through the eye 26. The external end of the damper rod 27 passes through the front Wall 5 and terminates in the knob 28. It will be seen that by moving the knob forwardly and rearwardly that the damper 23 will be opened and closed. For the purpose of securing the damper 23 in any given selective position notches 29 may be formed on the damper rod 27, which notches may be hooked into the opening in the front wall 5. Applicant has attempted to describe a simple con ventional damper and claims no novelty in the damper. The side wall 8 terminates at v3Q leaving an opening between it and the end of the back of the oven 18. Numeral 31 designates a broiler which is simply shown in outline because applicant claims no novelty in it per se. The broiler 31 may be made as shown in rectangular form and secured to the range wall 8 integrally or in any other manner with the top of the broiler 81 being a continuation of the top of the range 16. In the rear wall near the upper ;left hand corner as indicated in Fig. 1 are formed perforations 32. It will be seen that the products of combustion if the damper 23 is closed will be forced to pass through the opening between the end 80 of thewall 8 and the back of the oven 18 into the broiler 31 into the atmosphere exterior to the range and broiler through the perforations 32: The circulation of the products of combustion in the broiler is shown by the arrows in the broiler in Fig. 1. When the damper is open the draft will be suflicient to cause the products of combustion to pass by the opening into the broiler into the smoke stack 21. The products of combustion will, there' the broiler and range being in continuous fluid communication in the path of the prod nets of combustion through the range and means for directing indirectly the products of combustion from the range to the broiler.
