Be it known that I, FRANK HUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail Bands and Methods of Producing the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nail band and method of producing the same.
More particularly, the invention relates to a band comprising nails formed with inserted points constructed to hold against pressure tending to dislodge the band.
In the most preferred form of the inv'ention, the nails are formed on the band by stamping and manipulating the stamped projected portion to form an inserting point having more or less of an arrow head thereby facilitating entry of the nail into the wood or the like, but practically precluding dislodging of the nail.
The invention is particularly applicable for use for closing packing and other boxes and is designed to obviate theft of goods in transit of shipment.
The invention relates also to a method of producing the aforesaid nail band.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of one form of my nail band;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of another embodiment of my invention, on a somewhat enlarged scale; and
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail side and end views of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings, the nail band comprises the body portion 1 and a plurality of spaced nail portions 2, preferably integrally connected to the body portion 1. The body portion 1 is preferably made of metal or other material of either inherent rigidity or capable of being treated to attain sufficient rigidity for the purposes desired. When the nail portions 2 are integrally attached to the body portion 1, the nail portions are preferably formed by punching portions 3 of the body portion 1 correponding to the nails 2 but lying in the plane of the body portion 1 and severed therefrom on all sides except the attaching side 4, whereupon said teeth 3 are respectively turned through an angle of approximately 90 degrees and twisted through a suitable arc to form the spaced, twisted nails 2 indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The nails 2 are suitably cut or pointed to facilitate entry.
The resulting nail constitutes generally a nail twisted sufficiently to give the necessary strength to enter in the direction of its length and having one or more projecting portions extending at an angle to the mean longitudinal plane of the nail.
In the use of the aforesaid nail band, for securing protection against the opening of boxes of wood or similar material, the twisted or spirally formed nail portions are driven by blows applied by means of a hammer or like tool tothe exposed face of the body portion 1, the spiral formation of each nail increasing the effectiveness of entry and the laterally disposed portions creating a more or less wedge configuration adapted when embodied in the wooden or like side of the box, case or the like, to anchor each nail.
As indicated in Fig. 4, each punching portion 3 is preferably punched to provide the intra-extending cuts 5, 5 whereby upon twisting the nail portions, the cuts 5, 5 give rise to the more or less spear-like point 6, adapted when embodied in wood or the like to effect an increased anchoring of each nail. As will be noted from Figs. 5 and 6, upon twisting the spear-head portion 6 relative to the body of each punching 3, the laterally extending tails of the spearhead portion 6 are positioned in a plane extending at an angle to the curve formed in the body of each punching 3.
It will be understood that my method and the resulting article may be produced by other forms of apparatus or machines, and
generally other changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim: A nail band comprising a substantially flat body portion and a plurality of spaced nail port-ions extending integrally with and substantially normal to said body portion,
certain of said nail portions being twisted and having terminal spear-head portions, the tail portions of said spear-head portions being out of alignment with the body portion of its nail portion.
