IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES FOR MlDDLlNGS-PURIFIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,001, dated June 1G, 1874; application filed May is, 1874.

Be it known that I, J oHN T. N OYE, of Buffalo, in the county ot' Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes for Middlin gs-Puriers, ot' which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a side elevation of a brush complete, and the device for holding it securely in place. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through line X X, Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents a modification of the brush and elastic material combined.

My invention relates to brushes for cleaning or keeping open the sieve or screens of a middlings-purifier while in operation; and it consists in the combination ofthe brushing` material with a rubber tube, or its equivalent, arranged within or below it, so as to give the requisite elasticity.

In the said drawings, A represents the brush; B, the rubber tube within it; O O', the parts which hold them all together by means of the screws D, thereby trmly securing the brush in place, as shown at E. F represents the end pieces, which are held or fastened to the parts C C by means of the screws G. H represents a groove in the bottom of the end pieces F, which rest on corresponding parallel ways or V-shaped projections made to receive them, and upon which the brush is made to slide back and forth by means of any suitable reciprocating mechanism. The brush A may be made of plush, which I prefer, or of any other equivalent material. It is formed around the rubber or other elastic tube, substantially as shown in Fig. 2.

Instead of the tube, as shown, a sheet ot' rubber of the required length, width, and tbickness may be used with the brushing material, and bent or formed together, as shown in Fig. 3.

The ordinary brush, as usually made ot bristles or other similar materials, is too harsh or stiff, and soon wears out the cloth or screen while wiping or cleaning it.

It is the object of my invention to obviate this difficulty, which I do eff'ectually by providing a brush or wiper, as above described, that is far more elastic and sensitive than those of ordinary construction, and more certain to conform to the inequalities of the screen without rubbing too hard on its surface and wearing it away.
