Description

M. CIULLA ET AL PIPE TAMPER Filed Aug. 23, 1923 Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL CIULLA, O'F HASTINGS UPON HUDSON, AND DOMENIGO P..IEONTA1\TA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID CIULLA ASSIGNOR OF HIS ENTIRE RIGHT TO SAID FON'IANA.
PIPE (DAMPER.
Application filed August 23, 1923. Serial No. 659,009.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MICHAEL CIULLA, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Hastings upon Hudson, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York. and DOMENICO P. FONTANA, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Pipe Tamper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to smokers pipes and has reference more particularly to an attachment therefor constituting means for tamping or packing the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe.
It has been observed that pipe smokersv are constantly burning or soiling their fingers by attempting to tamp or pack the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe or are subjected to the annoyance of having to search for a suitable implement to perform this function.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to rovide a tamping or packing implement w ich will constitute an attachment for the pipe and which includes means for readily associating or disassociating the implement therefrom whereby said implement will always be within convenient reach.
As a further object of the invention contemplates an attachment of the character set forth which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and apply and which is highly efiicient in its purpose With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in. the novel construction. set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a p p equipped with an attachment constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation with parts in section and illustrating respectively in full and dotted lines the tamper in use and in its applied position when not in use.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates the bowl of a pipe provided with the usual integral stem portion B and removable mouth piece C.
The attachment constituting the invention consists of a keeper plate 10 of substantially circular configuration which is attached by screws or other fastening elements 11 to the rear side of the bowl A. The plate is provided with peripheral inwardly bent hooks 12 substantially at diametrically opposite points of the side of the plate and one of which is arranged at the top thereof. On the upper side of the stem portion B a socket element 13 is embedded. The tamper or packing implement comprises a substan tially circular head 14 which conforms in size and shape to the keeper plate 10 and is designed to be associated therewith by sliding the same upwardly with its peripheral edge received by the hooks 12. The tamper or implement is further provided with a handle or shank 15 which is hingedly con nected as at 16 to the head let adjacent the periphery thereof, the said stem or shank 15 being provided adjacent its free end with a pintle 17 which is designed to be snapped or frictionally received by the socket ele ment 13.
In practice the head 14: of the tamper or implement is interengaged with the hooks 12 of the keeper plate 10 after which the shank or handle 15 is swung downwardly to permit the interengagement of the pintle 17 in the socket element 18 whereby said implement when not in use is associated with the pipe and is always in convenient reach when necessary. When it is desired to withdraw the tamper or implement for packing or tamping the tobacco into the bowl of the pipe as illustrated in Fig. 2, the free end of the shank or handle 15 is lifted upwardly to disengage the pintle 17 from the socket 13, after which the head 1a may be readily disengaged from the hooks 12 on the keeper plate 10. The head 14 is then swung at substantially a right angle to the shank or handle 15 for use.
We claim:
The combination With a pipe, of an attachment therefor comprising a tamper including a head and a pivoted handle, a keeper secured to the pipe bowl having means for slidably receiving the head of the tamper, a socket element embedded in the stem portion of the pipe, and a pintle at the free end of the handle for engagement Within the socket element to maintain the head positioned in the keeper and whereby to permit of dis-association of the implement for use.
