Be it known that l, llDMoNn Gr. Funny, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Bridgewater, county of Rocio 5 ingham7 and State of Virginia. have invented a new and useful ln'iprovement in a Roll-Film Cartridge, of which the following is a description. reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a par` 1U of this application.

My invention relates to photography and particularly to a new and improved roll film cartridge. The primary object of my invention involves an improved method of securli ing the outer end of the paper strip or film covering` which eliminates the use of the so called sticker or gummed label now in common use.

lt is also an object to provide a securing 'l means of the character described which will securely fasten the outer end of tlnf paper strip in such a manner as will permit of easy and instant access to the film by the finisher or person developing the film,

it is also an object to make this securing means as simple as possible and at the same time extremely efficient and positive in its operation.

More specifically it is intended to so design il() the end of the paper strip or covering that it may be folded upon itself and by means of a series of slots cut therein elfectually secure and seal the strip around the film spool.

Other objects and advantages in details 1lb' of construction and operation will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying` drawing wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts.

Figure l is a plan view of a film cartridge, the paper strip or film covering being slightly unrolled to show the improved construction thereof.

vided at each end with flanges 3 there heilig the usual sensitized film l wound upon the spool, protected in the usual manner by a strip of paper or other suitable material 5.

ln carrying out my invention l provide the outer end of this protective covering with a series of parallel slots 7, 8 and 9. The slots 7 and 8 spaced a slight distance apart, preferably about one fourth inch with slot 7 being substantially longer than slot 8. Slot 9 is spaced from slots 7 and 8- a distance equal to approximately one convolution of the strip on the roll or cartridge and is near the free end of the strip. Slot 9 is substantially shorter than slot 8. The varying length of the slots allows for the tapered end of the paper strip.

The operation of my securing means is as follows: rIhe strip 5 is wound upon the spool until the slots 7 and 8 are positioned thereon; the end of the strip is then wound around the spool until it reaches these slots where it is passed through them first downwardly through slot 7 and then upwardly through slot 8. At this stage of the operation it will be seen by referring to Fig. 2 that the slot 9 lies immediately adjacent to slot 7 and slightly back of the same. rlhe free end of the strip which has been fed through the slots 7 and 8 is then folded hack upon itself and the end thereofl inserted in the slot 9 as shown in Fig. 3.

The strip is thus effectively secured without the aid of a separate medium such as the sticker now in use and the roll is prevented from unwinding, and at the same time the securing means is capable of instant disengagement when it is desired to obtain access to the film 4f for developing or other purposes.

The slots 7, 8 and 9 may be stamped, cut or otherwise suitably made in the strip 5 and as shown provide a very inexpensive as well as efficient securing means for the film cartridge.

The invention described explains the use of this securing means only at the end of the strip after the cartridge has been run through the camera and exposed and removed for developing. lt is obvious that the same securing means is equally adapted to both ends of the strip and l do not wish to limit myself to its use at one end only. Furthermore. as will be readily seen from the foregoing description and disclosure7 the lll) invention is capable of Various forms and modifications other than that shown and I do not limit myself to this embodiment other than by the appended claims.

I claim: n

1. The method of securing a photographie film cartridge against unwinding, including the steps of inserting one end of the strip thru :i pair of parallel slots in said strip and folding said end back on itself and fastening the same.
