FOLDING TABLE.
Application filed March 29, 1923.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it. knownthat l, Jozsnr KUBINYI, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Folding Tables, of which following a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful ll'HPl'OVGHlEHtS in folding tables and has for one of its objects to provide a table having hinged legs and side boards adapted to be folded or collapsed to assume positions adjacent the bottom side of the table occupying a minimum of space for storage or transportation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding table wherein the hinged legs have means associated therewith for retaining the same in a folded or collapsed. position and also devices for holding the legs in a rigid condition when set up to support a table top.
ll ith the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a folding table constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being illustrated in its set up position,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the table in its folded position, the same being partially shown in section to illustrate one of the spring devices for retaining the leg frames in folded position,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of the table, partly in section, with the legs and supporting bars therefor removed showing the tensioned pins associating with the side boards of the table for holding the leg frames rigidly positioned,
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line IVIV of Fig. 1,
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional View taken on line VV of Fig. 2,
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the table in its completely folded position, and
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view taken on line VIIVH of Fig. 1 showing the tensioned retaining pin for the hinged side board of the table.
Serial No. 628,486.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a table of the folding type wherein the leg and side boards of the table are adapted to be folded to assume positions adjacent the bottom side of the table top, the table enibodying a top board 1 of any desired design, the same being herein illustrated as rectangular in plan View with corner supporting legs therefor.
The leg supports for the table embody a transverse bar 2 secured to the lower side of the table top 1 adjacent each end thereof and to which a leg bar 3 is hingedly connected as at 4:, each end of the leg bar supporting a leg 5 at each corner of the table top as shown in Fig. 6.
A. side board 6 is hingedly mounted as at- 7 upon the lower side of the table top 1 adj acent each side edge thereof as shown in Fig. 3, the side boards when in their set up posit-ion as shown in Fig. 1 having the ends thereof extending transversely of the leg bars 2 and 3 as shown in Fig. 1, holding the legs against movement relative to the table top.
To retain the side boards 6 in the set up positions shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 7 a tensioned pin connection between the leg boards 3 and the side boards is provided, the opposite ends of one of the leg boards 3 being provided with outwardly opening sockets 8 that are closed by plates 9, a pin 10 slidably extending through the plate and socket and tensioned by the spring 11 with the projecting end thereof, as shown in Fig. 7 extending into the plate socket 12 having one edge thereof beveled as at 12 to facilitate positioning of the end of the pin therein.
Assuming that the table is in the folded positions shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 6, the leg bars 3 are so retained by the spring clips 13 which hold the side boards 6 and legs 5 in their folded positions. In setting up the table, the legs 5 are moved to a perpendicular position relative to the table top 1 with the leg bars 3 disengaged from the spring clips 13, such positioning of the legs 5 bringing the bars 2 and 3 into abutting relations as shown in Fig. 1 and permitting movement of the side boards 6 upon hinged connections 7 with the top 1. When the side boards 6 are perpendicularly positioned as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, the tensioned pins 10 are received in the socket plates 12 forming an interlocking connection between the side boards and the leg bars 3 providing a rigid leg mounting for the table. The table legs and side boards are readily eollapsed or folded by withdrawing the tensioned pins from the socket plates permitting the side boards to be folded with the legs overlying the same.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
lVhat iselaizned as new is:
A folding table comprising a top, legs hinged to said top adjacent the ends, side boards hinged to the top to. swing between the legs upon said legs being moved at right angles to the top, said "legs having openings therethrongh and the side boards having sockets in their ends movable into and out of alineinent with said openings each. of said leg openings being stepped in diameter to provide an inner pin guiding portion, an intermediate portion and an outer enlarged portion, each opening further having a socket screwed into its outer portion to close the outer end of the intermediate portion, a pin slidably guided in the socket and inner portion of the opening, and a spring in the intermediate portion urging the pin inwardly.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
