Be it known that I, JOHN DOUGLAS PannusEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic pistols of the type including a barrel-carrying and magazine-containing frame and a breechblock-carrying slide actuated by the force of the explosion or retractible by hand and has particular referenceto pistols of this type in which the slide is moved forwardly ofi' the frame when disassembling the arm. An object of my invention is to provide an ejector for arms of this type so constructed that it will be unnecessary to cut a slot into the rear end of the slide to provide a clearance for the ejector when disassembling the arm, thereby preventing gases, particles of unburned powder, or broken primers from blowing back into the face of the shooter. A further object is to provide a movable ejector so constructed that it will automatically be moved out of obstruct-ing position when the slide is removed from the frame, but will be returned to operative position when the magazine is replaced, or the slide is assembled on the frame.
But it will be understood that I do not intend to restrict the present invention to a magazine pistol, nor to any particular kind of firearm, nor to the combination of the several features in a single firearm.
My invention is embodied in one of its forms in the attached drawings whereinz` Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an automatic pistol embodying' my invention, parts thereof being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the slide partly withdrawn, and the ejector rocked down out of the way.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the frame, the slide being omitted.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig 1 showing a somewhat modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a reduced plan view of the frame of Fig. 5, the slide being omitted.
Fig. 7 shows a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6, somewhat enlarged.
In these drawings the invention is illustrated as applied to an automatic pistol of the type shown in my United States Patent #1,348,733 dated August 3, 1920, but it is to be understood that the invention is applicable in its broader aspects also to various other types of firearms.
In said drawings the numeral 5 designates the frame of the arm, carried by the handle 6. Slidably mounted upon said frame `is the action slide 7,. carrying the breech-block 8 which may be integral with the slide itself or carried thereby in any other suitable way; it being shown in the drawings as movable relative to the slide as in said prior patent. The numeral 9 designates the rear portion of .the barrel which may be rigidly or reciprocably carried by the frame. The numeral /10 designates a suitable firing pin extending through the breech-block for actuation by the hammer l1 which may be released by a suitable trigger 12. 13 represents a cartridge magazine mounted in the handle and having a spring-tensioned follower 14. 15 designates an extractor carried by the breech-block for withdrawing the empty cartridge case from the chamber and against the ejector 16 whereby it is thrown side-- ways out of the arm through a suitable opening in the slide. The ejector normally works in a groove 17 cut in the bottom of the breech block and extending from a point adjacent the ejector to the forward end of the block.
In the form of Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the
ejector is formed with a central substantially circular boss 19 which may have a concentric extension 20. This boss and extension are mounted for partial rotation in seats 21 and 22, respectively, in the frame, andheld in place by the left side 7 Of the slide 7. The lower part of the boss may be extended outward underneath the lower edge of the slide as at 23.
To the rear of the boss the ejector is formed with a tail 24 having a face 25 engageable with a face On the frame for limiting the movement of the ejector in one direction and for receiving the thrust of the shell upon ejection. The upper face 26 may be engaged at certain times by the breech. block 8, as will be described later.
It will be seen therefore that the ejector is rotatable from the normal position shown in Fig. l, to that of Fig. 2, wherein it 'depressed out of the way of the slide to permit disassembling.
It is desirable, although not essential, to provide detent means for resilientl or frictionally holding the ejector in eit er position. As an example of such a detent, the boss 19 may be formed with a recess 27 containing a compression spring 28 and a plunger 29 bearing against a substantially circular face 30 on the frame. Notches 31 and 32 serve as seats for the plun er when the ejector is in normal or in epressed position. j
When it is desired to disassemble'the arm, the magazine 13 is first withdrawn and the slide moved forwardly off the frame, whereby the ejector is turned on its pivot to the position shown in Fig. 2. This obviates the necessity of cutting a slot into the rear end of the slide to provide a clearance for the ejector when disassembling the-arm, thereby improving the appearance of the arm and preventing gases, particles of unburned powder, or broken primers from blowing back into the face of the shooter. When the arm is reassembled, the action spring causes the breech-block 8 to press down upon the face 26 and to lift the ejector to normal position. The same result may also be obtained by the wing 13 at the top of the magazine which may engage with and lift the ejector to its normal position.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 is shown a pivoted ejector of this type so designed that it can be fashioned from sheet metal. It comprises the ejector proper 36 fpivoted at 37 on a pin 38 mounted in the rame 5. The ejector has a tail 39 having faces 40 and 4l for cooperating, respectively, with faces on the frame 5 and breech block 8. The spring washer 43 lying in the recess 42 may be provided to serve as a detent. The operation of this form is the same as that of Figs. l to 4 inclusive.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided a construction which fulfills the objects primarily stated and while only two forms thereof have been illustrated and described, itis to be understood that modications thereof may be made without departing from my invention as defined in the annexed claims:
l. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in disassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and having a portion positioned above the bottom of the breech-block when in operativer position, and a groove in said breech-block for receiving said portion of the ejector having a rear wall adjacent said ejector and eX- tending forwardly.
2. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in disassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and having a portion positioned above the bottom of the breech-block when in operative position, a groove in said breech-block for receiving said portion of the ejector beginning adjacent said ejector and extending forwardly, and a magazine engageable with said ejector to move it into o erative position.
3. In a rearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in disassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and having a portion above the bottom of the breech-block when in operative position, and a groove in said breech-block for receiving said portion of the ejector beginning forward of the rear end' of said breech-block and extending forwardly, whereby a visible clearance slot for the ejector is avoided.
4. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in di sassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and having a por- 'tion located above the bottoni of the breechblock when in operative position, and a groove in said breech-block for receiving said portion of the ejector beginning adjacent said ejector and extending forwardly, said breech-block being engageable with said ejector to move it into operative position.
5. In a firearm, a frame having a circular recess, an ejector having a boss located in said-recess and detent means for restraining said boss against rotation.V
6. In a firearm, :i frame having a circular recess, an ejector having a boss located in said recess and detent means for restraining said boss against rotation, said vmeans comprising a spring pressed plunger mounted in the boss the frame.
7. In a firearm, a frame having a circular recess, an ejector having a boss located in said recess and detent means for restraining said boss against rotation, said means comprising a spring pressed plunger mounted in the boss and cooperating with notches in the frame, whereby the ejector is held in positions determined 'by said notches.
8. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame, an ejector pivoted to the frame and movable from operative position and an` extension on said ejector engageable by the breechblock for restoring the ejector to operative position when the breech-block is assembled on the frame.
9. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame, an ejector pivoted to the frame and movable and cooperating with ejector being formed with a rearward exl tension having ,breech-block for restoring the ejector to opa face engageable by the erative position when the breech-block is assembled on the frame.
10. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame, an ejector pivoted to the frame and movable from operative Iposition to inoperative position when the arm is disassembled, said ejector being formed with a rearward extension having a face engageable by the breech-block for restoring the ejector to operative position when the breech-block isv assembled on the frame and having a second face engageable with the frame for arresting the ejector in operative position.
11. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in disassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and having a portion positioned above the bottom of the breech-block when in operative position, and a groove in said breech-block for receiving said portion of the ejector, saidvgroove beginning at a point forward of the rear end of the breech-block and extending forwardly from said point.
12. In a firearm of the type wherein a breech-block is slidably carried by a frame and is removable therefrom in a forward direction in disassembling the arm, an ejector pivoted to the frame and movable from operative position to inoperative position when the arm is disassembled, and an extension on said ejector engageable by the breech-block for restoring the ejector to operative position when the breech-block is assembled on the frame.
- 13. An ejector for an automatic pistol having a detachable magazine and a movable breech slide dimnountable towards the front end of the pistol comprising a lever loosely pivoted about an axis at right angles to the axis of the pistol, said lever being constructed and arranged to be moved to and from its operative position by certain movable parts of the pistol.
14. An ejector for an automatic pistol having able breech slidel dismountable towards the front end of the pistol, comprisin a. leverl pivoted loosely about an axis at rig t angles to the axis of the pistol and disposed inthe pat-l1 of the breech slide so as to be lowered towards the interior of the body by the push of the breech slide, when dismounting the arm, the magazine having been removed.
15. An ejector for an automatic pistol having a detachable magazine and a movable breech slide dismountable towards the front end of the pistol, comprising a lever loosely 'pivoted about an axis at right angles to the axis of the pistol, said lever comprising a part which is lowered into the interior of the body when dismounting the arm after the magazine has been removed and which is pushed upwards by the magazine when the latter is reintroduced.
16. An. ejector for an automatic pistol having a detachable magazine and a movable breech slide dismountable towards the front end -of the pistol, comprisin a lever loosely pivoted about an axis at rig t angles to the axis of the pistol, said lever being adapted to be lowered into the interior of the body by the push of the breech slide when dlsmounting the arm, the magazine a detachable magazine and a movhaving been removed, and to be pushed up- JOI-IN DOUGLAS PEDERSEN.
