VIRGIL GAVAN REILLY, OF SYDNEY, NEW" SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALTA.
OPTICAL APPARATUS FOR use IN THE HAND nrirnonuorron or DRAWINGS, rno'ro- GRAPES, A D OTHER rLLosrRATroNs R DESIGNS.
Application filed January 3; 1923. Serial No. 610,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL GAVAN REILLY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of the city of Sydney, in the State of New South ales, Commonwealth of Australia (whose post-oflice address is Haymarket Theatres, lVIcDonnell House, Pitt Street, in the said city of Sydney), have invented a certain new and useful improved optical apparatus for use in the hand reproduction of drawings. photographs, and other illustrations or designs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an optical apparatus for projecting onto a sheet of drawing paper or other suitable surface the image of a drawing, photograph or other illustration or design whereby a copy of the original illustration or ob ect may be reproduced by hand to any desired scale with the exercise of a minimum of labor and skill.
As above indicated the invention is not only applicable to the reproduction of drawings, or pictures but also the designs of ac tual objects or articles of which a true representation may thus be easily drawn upon the sheet or screen onto which the. image is projected.
Referring to the drawings which form part of this specification Figure 1 is a side view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section on line r A of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the front portion of the invention, portion of the box or casing being broken away to disclose the sliding stand or easel therein. Other parts are omitted for convenience of illustration.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sliding stand or easel looking at the rear thereof.
Figure 5 is a perspective detail view illustrating the ventilating arrangement at the top of the box or casing.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form.
The invention includes a box or casing 2 preferably of rectangular and elongated form this box having at its forward end a central opening 3 to accommodate a suitable projecting lens t. The rear end of the box is open at 6 and provided with a suitable hanging curtain 7 to permit of access to its interior whilst excluding outside 1i ghttherefrom.
Located within the fore part of the box are one or more electric lamps 8 whichare preferably provided with reflectors 9 to throw the maximum light from the lamps onto the original illustration or article in the box as hereinafter described. The lamps 8 are supplied with current through a flexible conductor 10 having at its outer end an adaptor or coupling for connection to a convenient source of electric energy.
Formed preferably through the top of the box 2 adjacent the lamps is a ventilation opening 11 to permit of the escape of the heat therefrom. This opening is preferably covered by a suitable hood or cover 12 which is spaced from the top of the'box by distance pieces as in Figure 5 and forms narrow apertures 13 for the escape oftheheat without permitting of the entrance of external light to any material extent.
Slidably mounted within the box or casing 2 is a suitable stand or easelfor holding the original illustration or article which is to be reproduced. This sliding stand preferably comprises a suitable base or ledge 14: mounted on slides or runners 21 and carrying an upstanding board 16 on the frontface of which the illustration or picture 17 to be copied is pinned. The said upstanding board is preferably reinforced by an outstanding rib 18 at its rear. This rib also serves as a handle by which the stand or easel may be moved backwards o-r forwards within the box 2.
hen an article or object other than an illustration or picture is to be reproduced it may be rested upon the base or ledge 14 of the sliding stand or easel in front of the board 16 and thus moved backwards or forwards within the box for the purpose of focusing the projected image to the desired size upon the sheet or screen 22 on which the hand reproduction or drawing is to be 1 latter in relation to the easel so that the original picture or object on the latter may be disposed at different distances from the lens.
In use the illustration 17 to be reproduced is pinned upon the upstanding board 16 of the easel in an inverted position as in Figure 3 or if some article is to be drawn it may be rested upon the base 14 of the easel as aforesaid. The easel is then inserted through the open rear end of the box and the hanging curtain 7 closes said end thus excluding external light from the box. By lighting the lamps 8 within the box and darkening the room or apartment in which the apparatus iS located, the image of the illustration or article within the box is projected on to a sheet of drawing paper or other suitable surface 22 which may be pinned to a wall or other convenient object so that the image thrown onto the paper or like surface may be copied by following the lines of the projected image with a pen or pencil. To reduce the size of the image it is merely necessary to move the easel towards the rear of the box to move the latter forwardly in relation to the easel, or both these actions may be taken, to lengthen the distance between the original picture or article and the lens. To enlarge the projected image the reverse action is taken so that the original is brought nearer to the lens. By extinguishing the lamps in the box and relighting the room or apartment the progress of the Work may be ascertained from time to time.
According to the modified construction shown in Fig. 6, which is preferred in practice, the box or casing is formed in two separate sections 32 and 33 adapted to telescope one within the other. The rear telescope section 83 is provided at its rear end with a detachable or hinged door or closure 3% preferably hinged at its bottom to act as a drop door and held in closed position by suitable fastening devices 36. Thus by pinning the figure or illustration to be copied on said door or placing the article to be drawn within the box section 33, the image thereof may be focussed on the screen or paper by relative sliding movement of the box sections. The separate stand or easel may thus be dispensed with.
By the invention copies of drawings, photographs and other pictures or illustrations as Well as drawings from actual ol jects or articles may be readily executed in any desired size by comparatively unskilled persons, the invention having a wide range of utility and involving only a simple and inexpensive apparatus.
It is to be understood that various minor alterations or modifications may be introduced into the particular construction above described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Apparatus for the purpose indicated comprising in the combination of an elongated rectangular box or casing open at its rear end, a curtain covering said open end, a projecting lens positioned in the front end of said box, a stand or easel slidably mounted within said box and comprising an upstanding board adapted to hold an illustration or picture to be reproduced, and a ledge or base projecting forwardly from the lower end of said board to support an article or object for reproduction, an electric lamp or lamps located within said box between the projecting lens and the sliding stand or easel and reflectors attached to the front end of said box to reflect the light from the lamps on to the front of said easel substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
