ITED" I, l
HENRY DRYVSDALE, F LoNnoN,-ENGLAND, AssIGNo'R V'ro IN'ERNATIoNAL cARzroNs LIMITED, 0E LEYTON, ESSEX, ENGLAND, A COMPANY 0Fl GREAT BRITAIN.
FOLDING nox on 'nEcErrAcLnv applicati@ mea Api-m4, 1922. serial No. 549,638.
To all lwhom t may concern'.
Be it known that I, HENRY .-DnYsDALE, a Britishsubject, residing at 136 Philip Lane, Tottenham, London, England,`have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in A folding boxes or receptacles, commonly known in the trade as cartons and referred to hereinafter vas such. It, has for its object to provide a collapsible carton permanently lined with paper or the like so that when closed the carton is powder-tight 15. and substantially air-tight at the ends.
It has already been proposed to line such cartons with a non-absorbent material, such as wax paper, or parain paper removably adherent thereto, that is, the paper can be readily stripped off when desired without rupture to either itself or' the blank and also to attach said lining to dividedr lend flaps of the carton, so that when two of the opposite flaps were turned in the lining was stripped off from parts of the two other flaps to form folds along diagonal lines on these aps. vObviously careful manipulation was necessary 4in the closingV of such cartons to cause the removably attached lining to be detached precisely along the required lines and much wastage was liable to occur if the requisite skill and care were not fully exercised. f
yNow, according to the present invention, the lining is permanently attached to the carton andalso to the end flaps,- so, however, that it is glued to two of these end flaps over the whole of 'their surfaces, while to the two other end flaps it is glued along 40 triangular surfaces having their bases in the base or bottom edge lof these flaps. This provision enables the carton blanks so lined to-:be safely manipulated and the closing of the carton and automatic folding in 0f the lining material to be effected rapidly and tremities ofthe side walls of the carton body,
in a most reliable manner without wastage. Cartons of this. character may, moreover, be printed in a 'single machine at the same time that they are prepared for folding and the printingmaygbe in several colors With- .out danger of the'lining becoming detached. 'In order that my'invention may be clear- 1y understood will now describe one em bodiment of the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- F 1g. 1 shows a carton blank, creased, cutat its ends and covered with Van adhesive over predeter yined portions' in order to fix a lining sheet f material thereon to extend over the wholecarton blanl; and
Fig. 2 is a pictorial view of a box or carton,for1ned lfrom a blank as shown in Fig. 1 indicating clearly how the folding of the 'small aps or cut end members of the carton automatically assures the closing also of the lining material.
The shaded parts in Fig. 1, indicate the areas of the carton blank covered by the adhesive.. As shown on two of the end .pieces offflaps 1 of the carton blank at each end, the guInInedl area is shown to be of triangular nature, the outside edges of the triangle being limited 4by lines 2 drawn from the base corners of the flaps. These lines 2 are particularly disposed .in relation to each other, that is, at right an les, so'as to form the most desirableffolding line, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 by the same reference numeral.
It is immaterial'whether the area within.
the triangle is covered with adhesive or not, for it is essential only to fix a strip of the lining material along the lines 2, so that Whenthe small flaps 3 are first turned in,
as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the lining niaterial on the laps' 1 is folded first upon itself as shown at 7 in Fig. 2, on each side of the carton, and then interfolded with the aps v .when thelflaps 1 are subsequently turnedv in to complete the closure thereby effecting a owdertight and substantially airtight closure to the end of the carton. j
' The area covered by adhesive on the small flaps 3 or its actual configuration, may bevaried so long as the adhesive holds the 1in- `ing to the flaps in order to ensure therequired operation` when folding.
The area 4 of adhesive shown at the exholds the lining` inplace in the'cartonduring the folding operation, and it' will be clear that supposing, for economical reasons, the lining does not extend through. the lengthof the carton butis cut olfalong lines, as indicated by the dot and pick 'lines' 5, 'an equally effective result will be obtained.
C@ v Larmes 'llhe side `strip 6 of the cartonbody, is, as ing their base in the base of these flaps U shown, gumined also on the outside for ixwhereby by turning in the pair of opposite in to the 'adjacent side .of which the outiaps having the lining portions Wholl. at-
