E. S. TIPTON SHOPPERS NAIL CLEANING A'ND POLISHING SET Filed July 14 1924 F7610. FIG. 9. FIG. 11.
Patented Dec. 2, 1924.
UNITED STATES EDNA SIBLEY TIPTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOPPERS NAIL CLEANING AND POLISHING SET.
Application filed. July 14, 1924. Serial No. 725,884.
It comprises anouter case of substantially tubular construction, closed at one end and arranged to carry suitable butting material upon a portion of its outer surface; it also carries upon its outer surface means for en gaging and holding a nail-stick; it further comprises a container adapted to contain bufiing or nail-polishing powder, said container being also of tubular form and to telescope and be carried within said case. and to be removable therefrom at will. Said container is permanently closed at one end and the other end is provided with a removable closure element as a cork or plug, which when partially withdrawn from its normal, closed position, permits the powder contained within said container to be released or shaken therefrom. Said closure may also be wholly removed from the container for the purpose of permitting the convenient re-filling of same.
One form of construction whereby my inventive idea may be suitably embodiedis shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a complete unit of my nail cleaning and polishing set, including a nail-stick.
Fig. 2 is an end view and projection of the adjacent, cork-carrying end of said unit illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view and projection of the adjacent, closed end of said unit illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side view of said set with both the powder container and its cork partially withdrawn from their respective closed positions, and with the nail stick removed from the set.
Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the case of this set on line VV of Fig. 6.
Fig. 6 is an end view and projection of the adjacent end of Fig. 5, this being the open-container receivingend of said case.
Fig. 7 is a central, longitudinal section of the container of the set, the section bein taken on line VIIV1I of Fig. 8.
Fig. 8 is an end View and projection of the adjacent end of Fig. 7, this being the open, cork-receiving end of said container.
Fig. 9 is a side view of the cork or closure element for the container.
Fig. 10 is an end view and projection of the adjacent end of Fig. 9, which is the inner end of said closure or cork.
F ig. 11 isan end View and projection of the adjacent end of Fig. 9, the same being the outer face of said closure.
The drawings may be taken as representing the full size of the various members of my nail cleaning and polishing set, although, so long as the set is: of such a size as to adapt it to be readily carried in a handbag or in the pocket it will fulfill the object of its production.
Various kinds of material may be used in its manufacture, such as bakelite, French ivory, or any suitable. metal.
The construction illustrated in the drawings is substantially as follows:
An outer case, 1, shown separately in Figs. 5 and 6, is provided, which is substantially tubular in form, one end, 2, of which is preferably closed, the other end being open for the telescopic reception of a powdercontainer 3. Any suitable portion of the outer surface of said case is or may be adapted to receive, carry, or be covered by a suitable buffing material, and, as illustrated in the drawings, one side of said case 1 has a dove-tail groove 4 formed therein, as shown especially in Fig. 6, into which may be inserted a pad of bufling material 5 such as felt or Chamois skin; said bufling material may be so formed as to be readily insertable and removable at will, for the purpose of cleansing or renewal.
Upon another face of said case, and preferably located adjacent said closed end thereof is a projection 6 having a socket 7 formed therein, the axis of which is disposed in alinement with the longitudinal axis of said case and faces toward the opposite end thereof. Said socket is provided and adapted for the reception of one end of a nailstick 8, such as is commonly used for manicure purposes.
Within said case 1 is telescopically inserted the powder container 3, which is also of tubular form and has a transverse shape and outside dimensions conforming to the chamber of case 1, into which it has a sufficiently snug fit to frictionally retain it therein, so that its weight when filled with bufling powder may not cause it to drop therefrom by gravity. Said container is readily insertable within and removable from said case, at will.
One end, 9, of said container is closed and the opposite end is open preferably the full area of its chamber and is adapted for the reception of a closure device which will be presently described. The exterior of said open end of said container is preferably enlarged and formed into a stop or abutment 10 having the same outside dimensions as the adjacent portion of the case 1; the inner face of said stop at 10 is adapted to abut against the adjacent, end face of the case 1 when the container is fully telescoped within said case, as shown in Fig. 1, and
forms a neat and symmetrical junction therewith.
For the purpose of co-operating with said socket 7 to hold the nail-stick 8 in its proper and engaged relation to the other members of the set, a projection 11 is formed upon the corresponding side of said stop 10 in suitable relation to stop 6 upon case 1; a socket 12 is formed in said projection 11 in axial alinement with said socket 7.
The length of the nail stick 8 used with this set is somewhat longer than the distance between the opposing faces of said projections 6 and 11 when the members of the unit are closed, as illustrated in Fig. 1, so that each end of the stick 8 is engaged by a socket respectively and is thus conveniently and securely retained in position, when not being used.
Said projection may, however, be dispensed with, and the socket 7 made sufliclently deep to receive and independently carry the nail stick.
For the purpose of closing the open end of said container, also for the purpose of releasing portions of the powder therefrom wlthout wholly opening the mouth of the conta ner, a closure element or cork, see especially Figs. 9, 10 and 1lis supplied, which consists essentially of a straight, nontapermg, plug portion 18, having one corner thereof chamfered at 14; said plug is provided with a head 15 for contact with the outer end face of the mouth of said container when the closure member is fully inserted, as shown in Fig. 1.
lVhen powder from the container is to be released for use, as when it is sprinkled upon the buffer 5, the container 3 is first removed from case 1, the plug of the closure element IS then adjusted outwardly to the position,
shown in Fig. 4, or more or less, whereupon powder may be either sprinkled upon the buffer, or otherwise dispensed, as desired.
I claim the following:
1. A shoppers nail cleaning and polishing set comprising a tubular e: se having a bufling material secured to a portion of its outer surface, a tubular powder-container telescopically insert-able within and withdrawable at will from said case, one end of said container being permanently closed, the other end being open and arranged for the reception of a closure element, and a closure element for said container consisting essentially of a straight, non-tapering plug member adapted to be inserted and longitudinally adjustable within said open end and having a portion of its surface removed at and extending from its inner end for a portion of its length, whereby, when said plug is adjusted in the direction of its removal, an opening is formed for the release of powder from said container.
2. A shoppers nail cleanin and polishing set comprising a tubular case having a bulling material secured upon a portion of its outer surface, also means adapted to the engagement and retention of a nail stick, a powder-container telescopically insertablc within and removable fromv said case at will and having a mouth at one end thereof. and a closure element for said mouth of said container having a plug portion arranged to be inserted and longitudinally adjustable within said mouth whereby said mouth may be wholly closed or partially opened for the purposes respectively of confining and releasing said powder.
3. A shoppers nail cleaning and polishing set comprising a tubular case arranged to have a buffing material removably and renewably carried upon its outer surface, a buffing material so carried by said case, a tubular powder container removably carried and longitudinally movable within said case, said container being closed at one end and arranged for the reception of a closure element at the other end, a closure element for said other end of said container consisting essentially of a plug portion adapted to be removably inserted and longitudinally adjustable within said last-mentioned end, a portion of the surface of said plug being removed so as to produce an opening for the release of powder from said container through the utilization of said adj ustahility, and means carried by said case and said container adapted to co-operatively carry a nail stick.
4. A shoppers nail cleaning and polishing set comprising a tubular case of substantially rectangular cross section and having a dove-tail groove formed longitudinally of one outer face thereof, also a stick-socket carried upon another face thereof, a powdercontainer having one open end and adapted to be telescopically carried within and removable from said case at will, a stick-socket carried by said container in axial alinement with said socket upon said case, said sockets being adapted to co-operatively carry a nail stick, and a closure element for said open end of said container consisting essentially of a plug portion insertable and longitudi- 10 nally adjustable within said open end, withdrawable for the purpose of filling said container, and adaptable by reason of said adjustability, to the release of powder from said container.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
