l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the` following is a specification.
This invention relates to the paper feeding and guiding mechanism of ty ewriting machines. In the Royal Standard) machine as heretofore marketed, the paper is fed under the platen and held in yielding contact therewith by a group of rolls mounted in frames which can be adjusted to withdraw the rolls from the platen when it is desired to insert and arrange the paper upon the platen. These combined feeding, guiding, and pressure rolls cooperate with pressure rolls which normally hold the-paper, after passing around the front of the platen,
with a yielding pressure on the upper portion of the platen. Means have heretofore been provided, and as shown in rior atents issued to the Royal Typewriter ompany, Inc., for so moving these upper pressure and guiding rolls that they may be changed from their normal or working position on top of the platen to a position above and in rear of the platen and in rear of the paper table. In my ap lication for patent Serial No. 706,738 filed) April 15, 1924, I `have shown upper pressure rolls of a typewriting machine of 'a the Royal type so mounted that they may be conveniently moved from their normal position above and in contact with the platen to a position a considerable distance in front thereof s0 as to leave a clear Space between the pressure rolls and the platen for the insertion and the adjustment of the paper and for making erasures. l l
In the Royal Standard machine the upper pressure rolls are mounted on a vertically swinging frame known as a bail which is pivotally connected with the side plates of the carriage frame and carries at its front end a horizontally arranged rod on which the pressure rolls are mounted to turn and to slide endwise. be swung forwardly away from the platen so as to leave a clear space between the rolls and the front of the platen for the insertion and adjustment of the paper.
It sometimes happens that the bail or frame supporting the rod on which the pressure rollers are mounted become twisted or distorted in such manner as to cause the rolls to bear with unequal pressure on the platen and in my application for patent before referred to I have shown devices by which this difficulty may be remedied.
According to my present invention I combine with the mechanism shown in my before mentioned application devices which yieldingly press the roll carrying rod towards the platen in such manner as to automatically change the relation of the rod with reference to the platen in order to maintain an equal pressure of the rolls on the platen. The details of construction will be hereinlco ' after specied.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of part of a typewriting machine embodying my invention looking at the right hand side of the machine, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the mechanism shown in Figure 1.
Parts of a typewriting machine carriage frame are indicated at A and B indicates a platen. C indicates a shift rail and D a paper table. E indicates a paper pan o r paper guide below the platen. The ball comprises side arms Gr vpivoted at F to the paper carriage and each bail 1s connected at h with a spring I-I, the opposite'end of which is connected at h to the carriage frame. This spring operates in the usual way to hold the bail in working position or 1n its raised or withdrawn position. The side arm G is provided with a downwardly extending lug g' which is adapted to bear agamst the adjacent part of the carnage frame and to limit the downward movement of the bail. 10e The rod M which carries the pressure rolls R is mounted substantially in the manner shown in my application for patent above mentioned. The right hand end of the rod M is pivotally connected with at a.' the outer 10e end of a link K and a similar or equivalent link may be used to connect the left han I end of the rod to the bail arm on the left hand side of the machine. The link K is formed with an upwardly extending arm 7c 110 to which is connected at o the front end of an overthrow spring O, the rear end of Figure 1 and held there by the spring O. The movement of the link K on the right hand side of the machine' is limited by a pin a carried by a pro'ection k2 of the link K.
The bail arm (iris formed with stops y, y against which the pin a abuts to limitl swinging movement of the link. As specied in my application for patent above mentioned, provision is made for inserting the paper to be written upon in working position on the platen, with the greatest facility. When the pressure rolls are swung to their forward position ample space is provided for inserting' any number of sheets of paper desired. The rolls are held in such position by the overthrow springs O- and these rolls may be easily returned to working position and held inl contact with the paper with a yielding pressure. These adjustments may be effected without raising the bail but when desired the bail with the pressure rolls may be moved away from the platen in the manner indicated.
When the rolls R are located in their forward position the paper may be fed into the machine and moved upwardly across the front of the platen by merely turning the platen and without raising or moving the rearwardly swinging bail. It sometimes happens that the bail or frame supporting the roll carrying rod becomes slightly twisted or distorted in such manner as to cause `the rolls to bear with unequal pressure on the platen and my application for patent above mentioned shows devices for meeting this diculty, but I have found that similar results may be obtained automatically by mounting the roll carrying rod in elongated bearings and providing means for yieldingly pressing the roll carrying rod toward the platen. To accomplish this the link K is formed with a slot N into which one end of the roll carrying rod M extends and the link K is formed with a laterally projecting lug L against which bears the upper end of a spring T, the lower end of whlch bears against the adjacent end of the rod M. The links K and the other devices just described may be substantially the same on opposite sides of the machine. The result is that should the bail arms G become distorted or bent out of their normal position or should the links K be misplaced, the springs T will com ensate for such irregularities and always old the rolls with substantially equal pressure on the platen.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of frame arms pivotally mounted to move about an axis in rear of the platen, a roll carrying rod located above the platen, links pivotally connected with the front ends of the frame arms and which support the roll carrying rod, and yielding devices for pressing the roll carrying rod towards the platen.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen of frame arms pivotally mounted to turn about an axis in rear of the platen, pressure rolls adapted to bear on the platen, a rod on which said rolls are mounted to turn, and slide endwise, links pivotally connected to the front portions of the frame arms and having guides in which the roll carryin rod is mounted, and springs supported by t e links and bearing on the rod to permit an automatic adjustment of the opposite ends of the rod to preserve erluality of pressure of the rolls on the p aten.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with rearwardly swinging frame members of a forwardly swinging roll carrying rocking frame pivotally connected with said rearwardly swinging frame members near their front ends, and devices carried by said roll carryin rocking frame for yieldingly pressing t e rolls on the platen.
4. In a typewriting machine,a rod extending from end to end of the platen equipped with pressure rolls mounted to revolve on the rod and move laterally thereon, means for pivotally mounting said roll carrying rod-to swing about a horizontal axis in front of and above the platen, and yielding devices bearing directly on the rod to move the pressure rolls into contact with the platen.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rearwardly swinging bail of a forwardly swinging roll carrying rocking frame. pivotally connected with the rearwardly swinging bail near its front end, and means carried by said roll carrying rocking frame for yieldlngly pressing the rolls into contact with the platen.
'6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the'plate'n of bail arms extended beyond the front of the platen and above it, a roll carrying rod, links having elongated bearings or ides for the roll carrying rod, ielding elvices operating on o posite en s of the rod for pressing the ro s into contact with the platen, and pivotal connections between the links 'and the front ends of the bail arms. .I
