To all whom it may concern:
'"Be it known that I, Gonnon S. FULCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State 5 of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ammunition, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ammunition of the kind used in fire arms, such as revolvers or the like.
\ The purpose of the invention is to provide a cartridge having a s'hell, in which. is contained a suitable, concentrated volatile liquid that will render a burglar, or hold-up man temporamly helpless and incapable of doing harm, such shell being so designed that it will be as effective for defense purposes as-a lead bullet, and yet be much less dangerous to bystanders or others.-
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawing which illustrates an enlarged longitudinal section through a cartridge constructed according to the preferred embodiment of my invention.
I utilize an ordinary cartridge 5, having a percussion cap 6, said cartridge containing a suitable quantity of explosive 7 and carrying a shell-8.
# The cartrldg'e may be made in any of the standard sizes now in general use, although a s ecial size can be used if so desired.-
S cient explosive '7 is used to give 'the shell 8 the necessary range to insure reasonable accuracy at close quarters without caus-- ing the speed of the shell to be great enough to enable it to penetrate into a body to any dangerous extent.
The shell 8, 'can be made of a suitable 40 plastic material such as gelatin," celluloid,
cellulose acetate, or the like. The rear portion of the shell is made into a solid base 9 which is formed thick enough to permit the necessary acceleration of the shell by the explosive, while the front portion of the shell is hollowed to provide a oontainer 10 for a suitable liquid 11, and the tip end or nose 12 of the shell is preferably rounded and formed comparatively thin so as to break easily when the shell hits a body, and

, The liquid 11 should be of a volatile character so that when the fumes come into contact with a persons eyes, nose, or lungs, in suficient concentration they will render the person helpless by causing weeping, sneezing, vomiting, or by making him unconscious, or otherwise temporarily incapacitated. I have found that benzyl bromide,
bromo-aoetone, chloroacetone, chloromethylchloroformate (palite), diphenyl-chloroarsine or phenyl-carbylamine chloride, are satisfactory for the purpose had in view. However is to be understood that any other suitable liquid besides those abovenamed ma 'be used. 1
The thic ess and dimensions of the shell and the amount of liquid needed .is imma'-. terial. However, forall'practical purposes a small size, say .22. cartridge, will be large enough, {and a very lightrevolver willbe heavy enough to meet average conditions.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaimist- 1.
