HUGO TUECKMANTEL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE '1 & L CO. INC., NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LATCH FASTENER FOR, BAGS.
Application filed April 5, 1923. Serial No. 629,998.
To all whom it may concern: fastener casing assembled, the bottom plate Be it known that I, HUGO TUECKMANTEL, being removed to show the construction. a citizen of the United States, residing at A conventional type of hand bag is indi- Newark, in the county of Essex and State cated in the drawing, having sides and 5 of New Jersey, have invented new and use- 11 stitched or otherwise secured to frame ful Improvements in Latch Fasteners for coverings 12 and 13, completely enveloping Bags, of which the following is a specificathe frame members lt and 15, which, as tion. shown, are angular in cross section and, as This invention relates to improvements will be understood, extend in parallel along 10 in fasteners for hand bags, v'alises and like the length of the bag opening and thence structures having hinged frames and more downwardly at the sides, where they are particularly to types of fasteners used to engaged by hinges, not shown. engage the frames near their ends along their The frame member 14 is usually considstraight outer edges. erably larger than its mate and arranged to 15 One of the objects of the invention is to overlie the same when the bag is closed, as provide an unusually strong and secure indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, but it is to be unfastener composed of a pivoted latch bolt derstood that the frame formation is immamember on one frame element and a closed terial with respect to the invention. loop or eye receptive of the bolt fixed on The fastener consists of an oblong rec- 20 the mating frame element. tangular casing composed of a top plate 16,

Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the Fixed rigidly in the cover plate 25 is a bar 26, curved to a radius on both edges from the axis of the pin 23, and guided by slots 27 and 28 formed respectively in the top and bottom plates 16 and 21, the bar being adapted to extend through slots 29 in the bag frame to a point within the bag.
At the end of the bar 26, on its outer edge I is a lug 3O suited to pass through the slot 29 in the frame but engage the plate 21, the slot 28 of which is of insufficient length to permit its passage.
Formed in the convex edge of the bar are two notches 31 and 32, respectively near its rounded free end 3% and plate 25.
A slide composed of two plates 35, connected rigidlyby a rod 36, is loosely contained in the casing and drawn towards the bar 26 by means of a spring 37 connected at its ends with the plates and bent to present a central bight 38 passed around the post 22. 1
A roller 39 is revolubly mounted on the rod 36 and adapted to enter either of the notches 31 or 32, thus holding the cover plate 25 and bar 26 in either a raised or lowered position, but permitting movement thereof upon the application of moderate force. I
Firmly fixed to the lower vertical portion of the frame member 15 is an outstanding plate arm 40 having a slot 41, which, upon closing the frame members, registers with the path of the bar 26 so that the bar enters the slot as the cover plate is moved down, effectually locking the frame memhere from separation.
When it is desired to open the bag the plate 25 is readily raised upon its hinge pin 23 by grasping the overhanging edge and applying enough force to press the roller 36 out of the notch 32, allowing the roller to travel along the curved edge of the bar until it enters the notch 31, at which time the bar 26 will be out of engagement with the keeper plate 40 and permit the bag to open.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for'this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details of the exact construction shown, it beingobvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made with out conflicting with the scope of the; appended claims.
