Be it known that we, VILLIAM H. NonL- TiNs and EMIL A. SMITHFIELD, citizens of the United States, and residents of Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Gaste-r Slide; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which lile numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a caster slide having a stem or pintle, a top plate, a bottoni plate and an intermediate plate, the
' saine being associated together to form a rigid construction.
The chief object of the invention is to ronstruct a slide from a pintle and metal plates, preferably sheet metal in character, which are adapted to be connected together at substantially a central plane through the resultant slide construction and anchor the lower end of the pintle for securing said stein or pintle against rocking movement in 'the resultant rigid slide.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the association of an intermediate anchoring plate with a cover and bottom plate, whereby the pint-le is secured to 'the resultant slide construction and the elements of said slide construction are rigidly anchored thereto and the slide construction is secured in rigid relation.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from 'the accompanying drawings and the following description and cla ms.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings there is illustrated a stem or pintle 10 having an enlargement 11, and herein said pintle is shown provided with another enlargement 12 therebeneath and in spaced relation, between which is the end of the pintle 13. A plate 14 is centrally apertured as at 15 and is positioned in the groove 16 formed between the two superposedenlargements 11 and 12. rllhe plate 14 may be termed a cover plate and extends outwardly and downwardly toward the median plane of the slide and terminates in a peripheral. edge.

Herein there is provided a bottom plate 15 which extends outwardly and upwardly toward the same median plane of the slide, Said plate is adapted to support the end of the pintle 13, as herein shown, although the same may terminate short thereof.
Interposed between the top plate 14 and the bottom plate 15 is an auxiliary plate 16. This intermediate plate 16 is apertured as at 17 and extends upwardly and outwardly as at 18, so that as shown in Fig. 1 said plates 14 and 16 terminate in substantially the median plane of the slide and are secured together in rigid relation by a crimping iange 19, herein shown integral with and formed as an extension of the bottom plate 15. As shown in Fig. 1, the upwardly and outwardly extending portion of the intermediate plate is spaced from the bottom plate 15 near the `outer edge of the slide. The resultant construction is a rigidly constructed sheet .metal slide.
The head of the pintle 10 may be formed in any desired or preferred manner, such as shown in the following patents: No. 938,- 888, dated November 2, 1909; No. 1,111,085, dated September 22, 1914; No. 1,346,239, dated July 13, 1920 or No. 1,426,494, dated August 22, 1922.
As indicated by these patents the stem 10 may be detachably received by a socket of the character described in the last two patents, ory by a caster support detachably secured to a tubular leg, as shown by Patent No. 1,029,795, dated June 18, 1912. Also if desired the stem 10 may be rigidly associated with a spring frame construction of any desired or preferred character, such as those illustrated in the two first-mentioned patents. The foregoing, however, as illustrated by the patents enumerated, illustrates that the invention consists of a pintle or stem associated with three or more plate members which form. a rigid slide construction preferably sheet metal in character.
In F ig. 2 there is illustrated a modified form of the invention, and in said figure the same parts shown in Fig. 1 are indicated by similar numerals increased by 100. This form of the invention, however, illustrates the intermediate plate 116 having the central aperture 117 and is provided with an upwardly extending collar 120 which secures greater rigidity and strength.
ln Fig. 3 a form of the invention is illustrated which is somewhat similar to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this form ot the invention the numbers are similar to those in the previous igures, but are of the 200 series. The intermediate plate 216 is centrally apertured at 217 but is provided with a` down-turned collar 220.
In Fig. 4 there is illustrated another' form ot the invention, and in this form ot the invention two diilherences may be noted from that illustrated in. Fig. 1. In this ligure numerals oit the 300 series are used. The top plate 314 is herein shown provided with the locking or crimping liange 319 instead ot the bottom plate 15 as shown in Fig. 1. The intermediate or anchoring plate 316 in this form of the invention substantially follows the contour oi the bottom plate 315. TWith the exception oi' these differences, the slide shown in Fig. 4 is substantially similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention is illustrated, and this form of the invention is similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 4. In this gure numerals of the 400 series are utilized. Herein the top plate 414 is provided with the locking 'l'lange 419 and the intermediate plate 416 substantially follows the contour of the bottom plate 415. Herein the intermediate or anchoring plate is shown apertured as at 417 and provided with an upstanding collar 420 substantially similar to the collar 120 shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 6 there. is illustrated a modified form of the invention which is substantially similar to that disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4. In this ligure numerals oli' the 400 series are utilized. Herein the top plate 514 is provided with the locking llange 519. vThe intermediate or anchoring plate 516 is provided, which is positioned substantially as shown in Fig. 3, and, therefore, similar to the plate 216, and similarly is provided with a central aperture 517 and down-turned collar or flange 520 defining the same. rlhe bottom plate is indicated bythe numeral 515.
In Fig. 7 there is illustrated a modified li'o'rm of the invention, and this form ot the invention includes a top or cover plate 614 which is fully curved in cross section throughout its length, thereby differing from the previous forms of the invention heretofore described. The intermediate or auxiliary anchoring plate 616 is similarly formed. It also is provided with the central aperture 617 for anchoring the bottom of the pintle. The bottom plate 615 is herein shown provided with the retaining flange 619.
In Fig. 8 there is illustrated a` modified form of the invention which is similar to Fig. 7 and also includes the commonsubject matter disclosed in Figs. 2 and 5. Herein the top plate 714 is similar to the 'lop plate 614 and the bottom plate 715 is similar to the bottom plate 615. The anchoring plate 716, however, in addition to including the central aperture 717 includes an upwardly directed collar 720 substantially similar to the collars 120 and 420 disclosed respectively in Figs. 2 and 5. It will be noted that in Figs. 7 and S the auxiliary plate substantially conforms to the outline of the bottom plate and in this respect is similar to thoseV forms of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In Fig. 9 another modified form of the invention is illustrated, and herein the top plate 814 is shown substantially similar to the top plate 614 and 714 disclosed in Figs. 7 and 8. The bottom plate 815 is substantially similar to the bottom lplates in the before-mentioned figures, and is provided with the locking flange 819. The intermediate or auxiliary anchoring plate 816 is herein shown provided with the central aperture 817 and the down-turned ilange 820 substantially similar to the plates 516 and 216 provided with the flanges 520 and 220 respectively disclosed in Figs. 6 and 3 respectively. It will be noted that these three figures in addition to having the common disclosure ot' a down-turned flange also have the common disclosure of a portion ol? its surface spaced from the bottom plate as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 and Fig. 6.
In Fig. 10 there is illustrated a modilied form of the invention, and for convenience this form of the invention may be stated as substantially similar to that disclosed in Fig. 2. Thus, the top plate 914 and bottom plate 915 are secured together by the flange 919 and secure the auxiliary plate 916, which herein is shown centrally apertured as at 917 and provided with an upturned collar 920 for receiving the end of the pintle 910. In this form of the invention, however, the end of the pintle is reduced as at 921 so as to be seatable in the aperture 917 and form a shoulder bearable on the collar detining said aperture. A further modified lio-rm might be illustrated, but is not herein shown, and the same consists of securing the locking llange 919 to the` top plate 914 instead of the bottom plate 915. In this respect this suggested modification would conform to the disclosure shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive.
In Fig. 11 a further modified form of the invention is illustrated, and in this form of the invention the pintle 1010 is shown with its lower end reduced as at 1021 and the same is herein receivable in the aperture 1017 provided in the auxiliary plate 1016, and herein `said plate is shown provided with an aperture delining collar, down-turned as illustrated and indicated by the numeral 1020. The top plate 1014 is associated with the bottom plate 1015 by the locking flange 1 1019. Herein this locking flange is shown as a continuation of the top plate, but as previously suggested, a modification thereof would include the formation of the flange upon the bottom plate, such as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 inclusive respectively.
-1n Fig. 12 there is illustratedV a modified form of the invention, and in this form of the invention the top plate 1114 is substantially similar to the bottom plate 1115; and while in all of the preceding modifications the substantially peripheral securing mem ber was illustrated as integral with the top or bottom plate, herein said substantially peripheral member is illustrated as a separate piece and is indicated by the numeral 1119. Between the top and bottom plate, there is positioned an intermediate or auxiliary plate 1116 which is provided with a central aperture 1117 for receiving the end of the stem 1110 and anchoring the same against rocking or tilting movement with respect to the slide. As shown in Fig. 12 the plate 1116 substantially follows the contour of the bottom plate 1115, but if desired, the same may be otherwise positioned as previously sug gested.
'In Fig. 13 another modified form of the invention is illustrated, and in this figure the substantially peripheral securing means is indicated by the numeral 1219 and is illustrated as a separate member substantially similar to the separate member 1119 shown in Fig. 12. Herein the top plate 1214 is secured to the stem 1210, and the bottom plate 1215 is secured to the top plate by the peripheral member 1219. Between said plates is an anchoring member 1216 which is centrally apertured at 1217 and provided with an upturned collar or neck 1220 herein shown adapted to receive the reduced neck 1221 of the stem 1210. This form of the invention in addition to being similar to that illustrated in Fig. 12 is also similar to the forms of the invention in Figs. 2, 5 and 1.1. Likewise, while the intermediate anchoring member is shown following the contour of the. bottom plate 1215, the same may be otherwise positioned if desired.
1n Fig. 14 a further modified form of the. invention is illustrated, and this form of the invention is similar to the modification to Figs. 12 and 13, in that the same is provided with a separable peripheral securing member 1319, whereby the top plate 1314 and the bottom plate 1315 are. secured together in rigid relation. Herein the stem 1310 is reduced as at 1321, and said reduced portion is receivable by a down-turned collar 1320 providing an aperture 1317 in the intermediate spacing member 1316 which is also secured by the aforesaid member 1319.
In F ig. 15 is illustrated a further modified` form of the invention. Herein the pintle enlargements 1411 and 1412 simultaneously1 secure a bearing plate or washer 1430 and the topf plate 1414 to the stem 1410. The remainder of the construction may be otherwise suitably formed, for example, as illus- Itrated in Fig. 10.
Sii'nilarly, the modification shown in Fig. 16 is provided with a bearing plate or washer 1530 secured with the top plate 1514 to the stem 1510 by the stem enlargements 1511 and 1512. However, herein the top 1514 is depressed at 1531 to seat or nest the plate 1530. The remainder of the construction may be otherwise suitably formed, for example, as illustrated in Fig. 10.
The plate enclosed end of the pintle, since it is positively prevented against all or any rocking movement may be shortened if desired, that is, not engage the inner and upper surface of the bottom plate. Such a modification is illustrated in the several figures by the dotted lines near the end of the pintle. Thus shock received by the bottom plate will be absorbed by the large area of the contactingportion of the anchoring member, whereby a cushioning effect will be secured not possible when the pintle engages t-he bottom plate and forms a relatively smaller shock absorbing surface.
In Fig. 17 there is illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention, and in this figure 1610 indicates the stem having spaced enlargements 1611 and 1612 which rigidly secure the top plate 1614 to the stem. 1631 indicates an arched port-ion from which projects outwardly and downwardly a peripheral ledge 1632. rFhe peripheral locking ring or flange 1619 is herein illustrated in tegral with the bottom plate 1615. Positioned between said plates and having its peripheral edge abutting the peripheral edge of the ledge 1632 is an ai'ichoring plate 1616 similar to the anchoring plates heretofore described. Herein the same is similarly provided with a collar 1620 to receive the reduced end 1621 of the enclosed portion 1613 of the stem 1610.
In the several figures, 'to-wit, Figs. 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 the collar-encircled portion of the stem, indicated by the respective numeral (hr-1) 10 -l- 21 (where N is' the number of the particular figure), is shown reduced to a diameter below that of the stem. This construction requires a screw machine or similar reduction operation. r1`he preferred form, therefore, would be to have the collar-encircled stem portion unreduced but the adjacent portion offset or enlarged, forming a shoulder which can be readily formed at the same time that other parts such as the collar (hl-1) 10 -l- 12 are formed.
In Fig. 1S there is illustrated a. modified form of the invention which is similarto the. forms previously mentioned in the last paragraph, in that there is illustrated a stein lill) 1710 having an enlargement 1711 and a parallel enlargement 1712 which provides the shoulder portion 1721 abuttable by the stemencircling collar or sleeve 1720 which also is bearable upon the anchoring plate 1716. The bottom plate 1715 and top plate 1714 constit-ute the remainder of the invention.
In Fig. 19 the invention is somewhat similar to that illustrated in Fig. 18, but in this ligure the stem 1810 is shown encircled or enclosed by a sleeve portieri 1820 integral with the anchoring plate 1816, and in this respect is substantially similar to the anchor plate 1515 and 1616 of Figs. 16 and 17. Herein said sleeve portion extends to the enlargement 1812 which forms the shoulder 1821. The top plate 1814 and bottom plate 1815 constitute the remainder of the construction.
Figs. 20, 21 and 22 illustrate modified forms of the invention, in that the shoulderforming portion 1820, indicated by the numeral (N-l) 20, is positioned bcneath the anchoring plate indicated by the numeral (N-l) 10 -l- 16 instead of positioned between said anchoring plate and the top plate as heretofore illustrated. In Fig. 20 the stem 1910 is provided with the upper enlargement 1911, and upon its free end or substantially adjacent thereto, there is provided an enlarged portion 1912 which forms a shoulder 1921 engageable b-y the apertured plate 1916 retained in position and positioned between `the top and bottom plates 1914 and 1915 respectively. Herein a sleeve is indicated by,y the numeral 1920 and is shown of wood or other similar material. Said sleeve substantially encloses the plateenclosed portion 1913 of the stem and also substantially fills the space between the top plate and the anchoring plate.
In Fig. 21 the stem 2010 is similarly provided with enlargements 2011 and 2012, the latter being adjacent the end of the pintle. Said enlargement 2012 provides a shoulder 2021 engagea-ble by the anchoring plate 2016. The anchoring plate 2016 is associated with the sleeve 2020, which herein is' shown in.- terposed between the t-op plate 2014 and the anchoring plate 2016. The bottom plate 2015 constitutes the remainder of the construction.
In Fig. 22 the stem 2110 is shown associated with the top plate 2114 and the bottom plate 2115 which are suitably secured together and secure in the usual manner the anchoring plate 2116. Herein the anchoring plate is shown provided with an integral sleeve or collar 2120 which is substantially similar to the construction shown in Fig. 21 except that said sleeve is integral with the plate. The stem includes the enlargements 2011 and 2012 having the shoulder portion 2021.
In Fig. 23 a further modified form oit the invention isl illustrated, and herein the stem 2210 is shown enlarged at 2211 and 2212, the latter being adjacent the end. This forms a shoulder 2221 upon which a collar 2220 bears, which collar may be extended as at 2240 which herein is shown as a sepa.- rable sleeve for encircling the plate enclosed portion 2213 of the stem 2210, which sleeve is also adapted to bear upon the top plate 2214 in substantially the same manner that the sleeves 2021 and 2121 bear upon their respective top plates. The bottom plate 2216 completes this construction.
Throughout the claims and specilications, plate has been used to designate the anchoring member (hl-1) X 10 16 in the respective ligure where N is the number of the figure. However, it is to be understood that the term plate is intended to include aspidered constructionv as well as other equivalent anchoring means.
While the invention has been described in great detail in the foregoing speciiications, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in', character, for the many modifications thereof including the many herein illustrated as well as those previously suggested and those which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art are all considered to be within the broad purview of the invention as outlined by the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
l. A slide including a stem, a cent-rally apertured plate upon said stem, another centrally` soclreted plate for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, and an upwardly directed bottom plate, said top and bottom plates being rigidly secured together.
2. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, another centrally socketed plate for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, an upwardly directed bottoni plate, and substantially peripheral means securing the top and bottom plate together in an intern'iediate plane.
3. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, another centrally soclreted plate for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, an upwardly directed bottom plate.A and substantially peripheral means integral with one of the outer plates for securing the same together in an intermediate plane.
4. A slide including a centrally apertured top plate, a bottom plate, a pintle extending through the aperture and into the slide formed by the plates, and means additional to the pintle and between said plates for anchoring the pintle against rocking movement With respect to the slide.
5. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured top plate, an upwardly directed bottom plate, said plates being secured together in an intermediate plane, and anchoring means positioned between said plates and having an aperture defining collar concentric with said stem.
6. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured bottom plate, an upwardly directed bottom plate, said plates being secured together in an intermediate plane, and anchoring means positioned between said plates and having a. collar concentric with said stem, said stein having a shoulder abuttable by said collar.
7. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured top plate, another centrally socketed plate positioned therebeneath for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, and an upwardly directed bottom plate, said outer plates being rigidly secured together and said intermediate plate conforming substantially to the contour of the bottom plate.
8. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, another centrally apertured plate positioned therebeneath for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, an upwardly directed bottom plate, said outer plates being rigidly secured together and said intermediate plate substantially conforming to the contour of the bottom plate, and an aperture defining collar' concentric with said stem.

A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, another centrally apertured plate positioned therebeneath for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking moif'ement, an upwardly directed bottom plate, said outer plates being rigidly secured together' and said intermediate plate substantially conforming to the contour oit the bottom plate, and an aperture delining collar concentric with said stem, said stem having a shoulder abuttable by said collar.
l0. A slide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, another centrally socketed plate positioned therebeneath and bearable thereon for receiving an end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement, and an upwardly directed bottom plate, said outer plates being rigidly secured together.
l1. Aslide including a stem, a centrally apertured plate, an upwardly directed bottom plate, another centrally socketed plate for receiving the end of the pintle and anchoring the same against rocking movement and simultaneously bearable upon both plates, said top and bottom plates being secured rigidly together'.
12. In a slide, a centrally apertured top plate a bottom plate, a pintle extending through the aperture and into the slide formed by the plates and terminating adjacent the bottom plate but shortI thereof, and means between said plate for engaging the pintle adjacent the bottom plate for anchoring the pintle against rocking movement with respect to the slide and for forming a cushion support for the bottom plate.
13. A slide including a centrally apertured top plate, a bottom plate, a pintle eX- tending through the aperture and into the slide formed by the plates, anchoring means positioned between said plates and having a` socket for receiving the end of the pintle, said pintle having an enlargement between said outer plates for stein-securing purposes.
14. A slide including aI centrally apertured top plate, a bottom plate, a pintle extending through the aperture and into the slide iormed by the plates, anchoring means positioned between. said plates and lia-ving a socket for receiving the end of the pintle, and a sleeve surrounding the free end of the pintle and associated with the anchoring member and for transmitting axial thrust to the top plate adjacent its aperture.
