EDWARD WHITELEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATER-HEATER SURROUNDING FIRE-POTS 0F COOKING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,156, dated June 17, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD VVHITELEY, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolkand State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cooking in Hotels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which s Figure 1 is a vertical section through the center of the apparatus. Fig. 2, a plan of the fire pot. Fig. 3 a section upon the line A, A, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, an underneath View of the top plate of the water space surrounding the fire pot which will be more fully referred to hereafter.
The first part of my invention consists in a peculiar arrangement of flues leading from the fire pot to the space around the oven, in connection with a fire bridge for the purpose of distributing the heated airand flame more equally upon each side of the oven.
My invention also consists in certain improvements in the construction of the water heater surrounding the fire pot, which improvements will be hereafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings the oven A, is surrounded by the flues B, and C, and is furnished with a soapstone floor D. The flame and heated air from the fire pot E, passes by the flue F, into the space beneath the oven, against the bottom of which it is thrown by the curved form of the passage at f, in this space it is partially arrested by the bridge 9, and it then divides and passes equally from the space beneath the oven into the flues B, and C, upon each side of it, and thence off through the flue H. The fire pot E, is corrugated as seen in the drawings, and is surrounded upon all sides by the water space H, which communicates with the hot water cistern by the pipes K, and L, through which a current is established in at the former, out at the latter pipe. To prevent the water fro-m passing immediately from the lower pipe K, to the upper one L, I have placed a diagonal partition 0, between the openings of these pipes into the heater, as seen in Figs. 1, and 3-, whereby the water that enters at the pipe K, is forced to traverse around the entire heater in contact with the heated corrugated surface, before it can escape by the pipe L. To prevent any air from remaining within the heater when it is first filled with water or from accumulating therein, the top of the heater is so formed that it shall rise gradually from the point a around to Z), and thus any air which may collect at a, will pass around to 6, being driven out by the water as it rises within the heater. I, is the grate pivoted at 2', to the fire pot.
I claim 1. The diagonal partition 0, between the pipes K, and L, operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. I claim the inclined roof of the heater for the purpose of expelling the air therefrom, in the manner substantially as herein described.
E. VVHITELEY.
