To all whom it may concern:

e it knownthat I, FRED OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Rockcastle and State of Kentucky, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Automobile License Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention contemplates the provision of a fastening device for automobile license plates or tags, the fastening being designed to permit the-tag to be quickly and easily mounted on the holder therefor or removed therefrom when desired, and when on the holder to prevent the tag from rattling.

The loop is formed by bending a link of material upon itself and securing the free ends of the loop together bymeans of a disk or any other suitable element constituting a head and indicated at 13. Arranged to slide upon this loop is-a large disk 14 which of course is provided with a central opening to reecive and a key adapted to be slipped through the disk and from the edge of said opening is a boss 15. A coil spring 16 surrounds the loop and has one term nal bearing against the head or disk 13, Will e its other end surrounds the boss and bears against the disk 14. In connection, with these parts, I also make use of a key 17 having one edge tapered from the-center toward the opposite ends thereof as'at 18, the center of the key being formed with a notch 19. I

In practice, after the 'slot in one end of the tag is arranged to coincide with the adjacent slot of the holder 10, the fastening device is arranged with the disk 14 against the holder 1,0, whereupon the loop 12 is passed through the aligned slots just mentioned until it projects in advance of the tag, whereupon the key 17 is slipped into the loop until the notch is arranged-to receive the end of the loop. While the loop is being passed through the ali ed openings the coil spring is of course eing compressed, and after the key is slipped into position as shown in Figure 1; the tension of the spring serves to hold the tag immovably associated with the holder with a view of preventing loss of the tag as well as rattling thereof which frequently occurs when the tag works loose from the fastening means now employed. 'It is of course to be understood that one .of these fastening devices is used at each end of the tag.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire {to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be ,resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

1. A fastening device of the character described comprising a loop shaped member, a disk secured to one end of the member, a larger disk arranged to slide on said member, a coil spring surrounding said member" and bearing against the respective disks,

2. A fastening device of thecharacter described, comprising a looped shaped member, formed from a single piece of material,

a small disk secured to the free end of said member and holdin the latter together, a larger disk mounte to slide on said memher, a substantially cone shaped spring encircling said member and bearing against both of said disks, and a key adapted to be passed through the-closed end of the loop and having a central notch to receive, said end, the pressure of said springholding the key associated with said member, and said key having one side tapered from the center 10 toward the ends thereof.
