To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, JOHN HENRY R11)- nves, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal City, in the county of Grundy and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door locks, and more particularly to that class or type in which a latch member is adapted to be locked in its projected or locked position for securely locking the door closed.
The improved latch and latch locking mechanism is particularly designed and adapted for use in connection with vehicle doors, such as automobile doors, car doors, and the'like. The improved lock resembles the principle of the combination lock in that it requires specific knowledge of the operator or user of the particular manner in which the rotatably mounted two-part key operated tumbler c-tuating members must be set for looking or unlocking operation by a key from the outer side or by a manually operable member, such as a handle, from the inner side.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a generally improved door lock of the type or class indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and eflicient in use.
A further and very important object is the provision of an improved door latch and lock having the advantages of a combination lock and at'the same time having the additional advantage of being manipulated from the outer side by a key or manually operated by suitable handles or attachments from the inner side without a key.
A further object is theprovision of an improved door latch and lock in which the locking mechanism is entirely distinct from and separate of the latching n'iechanism so that the latter may be readily operated as an ordinary latch when convenient or desirable.
There are other features of the invention residing in elemental combinations and particular construction of parts, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the n vel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accom panying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The improved lock is provided with a casing 1, which may be of any suitable and convenient construction, said casing l, in the present instance, being provided with marginal walls 1, the latter being provided with bevelled or dove-tailed lugs 1, adapted to enter into and interlock with corresponding notches formed in the marginal edges of the cover or closure plate 1. The adjacent corner portions of the marginal walls 1 are provided with an elf-set recess 1, and the cover plate is provided with an inset portion 1 spaced from the off-set recess 1" and conjointly with the. latter forming a latch receiving and containing recess or guide slot, as shown most clearly in 9 of the drawings.
The cover plate 1 may be secured by means of screws 1, connected to the casing 1 and the latter may be secured to the marginal edges of the door 2, by means of screws 23, passing through openings in the lock casing. if desired, however, the casing may be used a mortise lock by fitting the casing in a similarly shaped mortise recess in the door and in which instance the latch operating spindle and handle and the key operated tumbler actuating spindle and sleeve members may be correspondingly extended.
The latch 4t, is adapted to be moved into and out of its projected or door locking position in the re by means of a spindle 5, extending through the lock casing and projecting on opposite sides of the latter a suitable distance to r ceive and carry suitable operating handles 6, which, in the present instance, are in the specific form of crank members 6 secured, in the present instance, by means of screws 6. In the present instance, also, the latch 4 and spindle 5 are provided with a loop 7, afiording a projection T adapted to be engaged by a projection on a latch locking tumbler when it is desired to lock the latch in its closed or looking position, as hereinafter referred to.
The latch locking mechanism comprises a plurality of tumbler members adapted to be actuated by means of rotatably mounted relatively movable key operated rotary members, one of said members being pro vided, in the present instance, with a safety member and the other with an operating handle or false key, said safety and false key members being arranged in cooperative relation to each other to set said parts in one position in a tumbler actuating relation and in another position in a tumbler non-actuating position.
The latch receiving or keeper plate 8, may be of any suitable and convenient construction but, in the present instance, comprises a bracket adapted to be secured by attaching elements or screws 8, the main body portion being provided with a vertically extending slot 8 (see Fig. 2), said slot 8 being extended for the purpose of adapting the keeper plate to interchangeable use at one side or the other or in the varying positio-ns of the lock and whereby the same may be reversed when desired, the sides of the slot 8" converging toward the center as at 8, so that when the latch is drawn down in cooperative relation to the inclined sides the door will be securely clamped and held .a. limb in closed position in the door opening or frame as well as preventing "any rattling or loosening of the latch, a particularly important feature in the use of the lock as a lock for doors of moving vehicles, such as automobiles or the like.
Referring now to the key operated latch locking tumbler mechanism and viewing and describing the same from'theouter or cover plate side thereof, as shown in (3, T, 8, 9 and 10 of the drawings, it will be seen that four tumbler plates 9,10, 11 and 12 are arranged within the lock casing and in the order mentioned, the first plate 9 being mounted adjacent to the closed side of the casing as shown, said first plate 9 being also held against lateral or longitudinal move ment, and the second, third and fourth plates,10,'11 and 12, being held against verticalmovement by a guide lug 13, secured to and extending from the closed side of the lock casing. It'will be seen also that while the opening 9 ,'in'the member 9, corresponds in length to the lug 13, it is sufliciently deep to permit the plate 9 to be moved vertically by thekey operated rotor 14, which, in the present instance, is mounted on a sleeve 14%, the latter terminating in a crank or safety arm 14". he key' operated member 1 is provided with'a bit or projection 14, which when in-a predetermined relative position or in registration with the adjacent key operated rotor for cooperating with the other tumbler members, is adapted to initially engage-within the large opening 9 of the plate 9 and initially elevate thelatter a sutlicient distance to cause the lug 9, to clear the lateral'arm 11*, of the plate 11,so that the 'bit 15, ofthe second key operated head or rotor 15, will be permitted to enter the recess 11", of the opening 11, of thethird or latch locking tumbier member and move the latter to the right so that when the'latchis in its projected or closing positon, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the projection 11 ,'thereof, will move beneath the projection 7 of the latch and prevent the latter from being elevated or opened. It will be seen that the rotor head 15 is mounted on a spindle 15" (see Fig. 20) extending through the sleeve 14F, and that the spindle 15 is provided with a crank arm 15, terminating in a handle 15. It will be seen also that the sleeve 14 has a safety device or arm 14 corresponding in length to'the arm 15, and as a means of temporarily connecting such arms 15 and 14*, the handle 15 is provided "with a spring resisted plunger 15W, adapted when the arms are in registration to enter the opening 14 (see Fig. 4) when pressed inwardly against the resistance of the spring by the head lo It will be seen also that the relatively movable tumbler actuating members 1 1 and 15 are provided with key receiving slots 1 1 and 15 respectively, to receive the bit 16 of asuitable key 16.
"It follows, therefore, that when the key operated heads 14 and 15are in registration that the plates 9, '10, 11 and 12 maybe operated eitherdoy a key from the outside or by the false key made up of the arms 14:" and 15 when said arms are'held in registrationand rotated or moved simultaneously from one side to the other.
The'arrangements of the bits 14 and. 15" on'the'key operated members l' land 15 are such with respect to the members 9 and 11 that when the heads 14 and 15 are moved simultaneously from left to right or clockwise (eitherby a key on the outside or the false key or a crankon the inside) that the third or latch locking plate 11v will be moved from its position shown in Fig. 7 to that shown in Fig. 8 so as to permit the latch 4 to be moved or elevated to its open position. When the head 14: and 15 are moved in an opposite direction or anticlockwise the'rplates 9 and 13 will be moved in an opposite direction sothat the projection ll on the latch locking plate 11 will be moved into engagement with the projection 7 of the latch, as shown inFig. 7, thereby locking the latch in itsprojected or closed position.
If, however, the rotary members 14 and 15 are moved out of registration, as for example, by moving one or the other of'the arms 14 or=15 a quarter turn or atright angles to each other the key can not be inserted in slots of such members and the plate 11 cannot be moved because it is not unlocked by the initial elevation of the plate 9 through initial contact ofthe bit 14 of the rotary member 14:.
It will also be observed that when the tumbler plate 9 is elevated initially to unlock the laterallymovablaplate 11 by the clearance of the lugs 9 and 11 it is elevated against; the resistance of-the-spring arm 17, mounted in-thelower;portion of the casing, asshown most clearly in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings.
If desired, the lock mechanism may be placed and held in an entirely inoperative position by bringing the safety arm 14* to one sideand securing itin such position bymeans of the spring latchlS, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. ,of the drawings.
Having thusdescribed :one of the emboc iments of my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which itwmay be made, orall the modes of its use; what I claimand desire tosecure by Letters Patent is,
1. A door lock, comprising a. casing, a latch provided with-operating handles, rotor actuated tumblers adapted to lock said latch, and crank and key operated rotor members in said casing for operating said tumblers, one of said rotor members being provided with a safety device and the other with an operatin r handle whereby to setthe parts in tumbler actuating and tumbler nonactuating positions as desired.
2. A door lock, comprising a casing, a rotatably mounted latch and oppositely arranged latch operating handles, key operated tumblers adapted to lock said latch in its projected position, and rotatably mounted crank and key operated members for operating said tumblers, one of said members being provided with a safety member and the other with an operating handle whereby in one position said tumblers will be actu ated to lock or unlock said latch and in another position will be prevented from operating said tumblers.
3. A door lock, comprising a casing, a latch provided with a spindle carrying operating handle key actuated tumblers in said casing adapted to lock said latch in its projected position, and rotatably mounted crank and key operated spindle and sleeve members in said casing for operating said tumblers, one of said members being provided with a safety member and the other with an operating handle in cooperative relation to each other to set said parts in tumbler actuating and tumbler non-actuating positions.
4. A door lock, comprising a casing, a latch having oppositely arranged latch operating handles, key and rotor operated tumblers, one of which is adapted to lock said latch in its projected position, and crank and key operated rotor members for operating said tumblers, one of said rotor members being provided with a safety member and the other with an operating handle whereby in one position said tumblers may be actuated to lock and unlock said latch and in another position will be out of tumbler actuating relation to said tumblers.
5. In a door lock, a casing, a pivoted latch, means for operating said latch, a latch locking tumbler provided with a projection adapted to engage said latch to hold the latter in locked position, a key operated rotor, a plurality of tumblers in cooperative relation to said key opera-ted rotor, and relative movable rotor means whereby in one position said key operated rotor will move said latch locking tumbler into and out of latch locking position and in another position will prevent the operation of said rotor to actuate said tumbler and latch locking members. 6. A door lock, comprising a casing, latch and latch operating mechanism, tumblers and tumbler actuating mechanism one of said tumblers being adapted to engage and lock said latch when the latter is in its closed position, said tumbler mechanism including a key operated rotor member on one side and a false key operated rotor member on the other, said manually operable false key in cluding a safety device adapted to be moved to a position to prevent the actuation of said tumblers by said rotors either manually or through a key and to be moved to another position to permit the actuation of said tumbler members by said rotors.
7. In a door look, a casing, a rotatably mounted latch, means for operating said latch, said latch being provided with a projection, a latch locking tumbler provided with projection adapted to engage said projection. oi" said latch to hold the latter in locked position, a two-part key operated rotor, olurality of tumblers in cooperative relation to said two-part key operated rotor, and means whereby in one position said key operated rotor will move said latch locking tumbler into and out or latch locking position and in another posioion will prevent the operation 0t said rotor to actuate said tumbler and latch locking members.
8. A door lock, comprising a casing, latch and latch operating mechanism, tumblers and tumbler actuating rotor mechanism one of said tumblers being provided with a pro j ec-tion adapted to engage and interlock with said latch when the latter is projected, said tumbler actuating rotor mechanism including a key operated member on one side and a manually operable crank member on the other, said manually operable mechanism including a sleeve carrying a safety arm adapted to be moved to a position preventing the actuation of said tumblers and to an other position to cause the actuation of said tumbler members either by a key on one side or manually on the other, and means for detachably connecting said safety arm to said manually operable crank member.
9. A door lock, comprising a casing, a latch provided with oppositely arranged op erating handles, tumblers in said casing, one of said tumblers being provided with a proj ection adapted to engage and interlock with said latch when the latter is in its projected position, and rotatably mounted relatively movable key operated tumbler actuating rotors, one of said rotors being provided with a sleeve carrying a crank arm for moving the rotors out of registration to prevent the operation o1 said tumblers and the other with a spindle carrying an operating handle, said crank arm and operating handle serving in one position to permit the simultaneous actuation of such tumblers by the rotary movement of said key operated members and to be moved into non-registering non-operative position relative to said tumbler men bers.
